I have listened to countless videos that try to explain this process, but until now I just never could truly understand it. Thank you so much for taking the time to touch on all of the "buts" and "ifs", you nailed it?

I am a natural level 6 and even toners or demis which are not supposed to change your natural hair (even at 6vol activator level) do change my natural hair and expose that copper. Every hair dresser says no toners don't lift natural hair but they totally do.

My natural is 6-7...in summer it is 7-8, thankfully my childhood pictures and black and white (saturation down) can tell you everything. I go with 6-7 level and it goes great with me. I use to go with blue black, it was hell for my roots. My hair grows fast and after a week my very light root looks not so nice...lets say it like that. I had to color my roots with black hair every week...than I got bangs so my parting would not show, so I could go to 2 week. Thankfully with red I can go up to 4-6 week no problem...up to 8 weeks and it is not nice... still my hair grows fast, just the contrast is not that big.

so if someone wants to go really bright red
Would it be better to take them super light and have them be bright red and it fade quickly
Or keep them at a level 5 and have them red but it would be a deeper red not bright red // not what they wanted ??

Hi there! Amazing video thank you. My natural roots are level 6. And I would like to go 8, like a nice little bit reddish brown, like a toffee or medium mahagoni. Is 6% will be enough? Or should I mix up a 7-7.5% concoction just in case? Also should I buy then a hair color cream that is level 8? Or would it work with a level 6 or 7 hair cream also?

Yes, that’s why it’s called ‘PERMANENT’ Color. Depending on the shade, level of lift achieved, porosity and condition of the hair, you can use a Color Remover or else a Bleach Bath. Both are drying, and the Bleach Bath more so usually, but may be necessary to remove some colors. You’ll need to use both a protein and very hydrating treatment afterwards to help repair the integrity of the hair and balance the porosity, and not just once but regularly at that point. Hope this helps.

What I don't understand is this "color doesn't lift" and how does this come into play with the developer %. Let's say you are now a level 5, and you buy a hair color level 6, that you want to develop with 9% (3 level of lift). Does this mean that your current 5 will go to an 8 or the hair color level will go to a 9?
If "color does not lift", why does it matter what % of developer you get? I am confused.
Basically I am now a 5 red violet, and I got a 6/66 & color that I was planning to develop with 9%. In my mind I thought that by using the 9% developer I will bring my current 5 to a 7-8. Will my final color be then 6 no matter what developer I use?

Something strange that I have noticed about my hair is that with my base colour that is 5-6 it doesn’t matter weather I use 15 vol 20 vol 30 vol or 40 vol it always lifts exactly two shades and nothing more than this. If I use 15 vol vs 40 the result is exactly the same I just have more damage with the 40… and the back is always darker than the crown and front hairs …

I thought 20-volume; 6% peroxide was always used for grey coverage - in this video it says 10-vol

We were taught that in school but I cover level 6 & below with 10 vol, level 7 with 15 and level 8/9 with 20vol! I’m not sure why they teach that if it’s not true haha

Thanks a lot for this video! I'm not a hairstylist, I'm just super interested in hair color (: I have a question! So my natural hair color is a level 4ish (my ends are level 5) and I want to achieve a lv 7 copper. So I thought I'd use 30 vol, BUT do I use the color in level 7 (f.e. Redken chromatics 7.46) or do I have to take a color with a higher level to really get this lift? From your explanation I thought I should use the color I want and the higher volume to push the levels of my hair. Am I right? Or should I use a blonde color and see how many levels my hair lift and where it get's me with the red/copper undertones and then work with a copper toner? Would both ways work? (Sorry for this much text! But thanks a lot for this video!!)

Colour doesn't lift colour. If you're a level 4, you lighten your hair to a level 7, then add copper (either toner or demi, or perm colour whichever you choose).

My natural hair is dark brown but I have fine hair. When my hair dresser took my ash brown and my hair ended up becoming a vibrant coppery light brown due to the underlying tone.

    Hi,
    Can you help please,
I'm a level 4 base, I've added some highlights with Blondeme and a 30 Developer.
Does that mean I'm now a level 6? When I use a redkens eq Toner do do I use a level 6 toner eg 06abn.. ?
    Thank you.

I think youd be a lev 7 if you used 30. You can use a level 6 toner but it will be darker. Don't use a toner higher than 7.
