- The story of the Jaguar XJ220 is about high hopes and big letdowns.
Built by a passionate team, it wowed everyone at first but faced problems during production. Both Jaguar and its fans ended up feeling disappointed, with the car not living up to its promises.

I like 1st gen Acura NSX more. The XJ220 was on display in Prague for a while,And it's Price was ... for the lack of a more adequate term ... insane 24 million CZK at the time, translating to 500 000 £ in the 90ies due to the exchange rate. Which Is, again, totally insane. And yes, IT was already confirmed IT would never get thé V12 And would be stuck with V6 instead.
Ridiculous.
I saw it there too! I was most impressed by how it had a perfectly normal looking interior wrapped in the most amazing body shell. Still too big to be a proper supercar though, over 2 feet longer than the McLaren F1.
This seems like a sophisticated AI voice narrating text. "XJ two-hundred-twenty", every time. Yet "blah blah em em shorter", every time. What person would talk like that, even if they're british?

Jaguar's engineers chose the fastest option, which was the V6. Lighter, compact, just as powerful. They only forgot that the customers are more interested in bragging rights and acoustic sensations than actual speed. Your comment has it the wrong way around.
I drove it at the Melbourne Motor Show because I was asked to move it so I took it for a drive it was the fastest car I had ever driven and I was super impressed because it was so fast and it looked so good it outshone every other car in the show and made

The problem was there were a lot of people thinking they could flip the car at the time it was first shown - but by the time the car came out the economy had gone into recession - the fact that the specs of the car changed just gave them an excuse to get out of purchasing it.

All good, but if you're going to use AI to do the reading, make sure you review before posting. This car was not known as the "two hundred and twenty." It was known as the XJ 2-20. I can't believe how irritating it is to hear two hundred and twenty repeatedly.

A friend once owned an XJS V12 and when we had to drive back to the city, I told him that I was going to take his car and he could drive mine. I left a few minutes after him and caught up with him and got a shock when I looked at the speedo ... it accelerated like shit out of a shanghai. The XJS and E-type were two of my favourite cars in the Jag range.
It's British and it's a Jaguar: already has 2 strikes against it.
Interesting fact regarding "Alcans bonded aluminum". Alcan was a Canadian mining company and aluminum manufacturer founded in 1902. Alcan use to manufacture aluminum hulls for boats using their bonded aluminum process in the late 60's up to the early 70's.

Should’ve had a V12, should’ve been AWD, and should’ve had active aero.
I can’t believe the decision makers don’t get that.
It’s like Honda with the NSX.
If you’re going to take on Ferrari, you better bring a V8!
It would have been a hit had they stuck with the original concept of natural breathing 6 liter V12 and AWD! Instead they went with a non-jaguar turbo V6 from a Rally car!

Spot on. Now THAT was a timeless design, and much better "proportions", although I never was a fan of the driver's seat in the middle. It also should have been 10% or so bigger. But the styling is marvellous
I just looked up the '92 model, in excellent condition it is valued at 689,000 (Hagerty Jan-Jun 2023 price guide). I remember the magazine articles at the time, how they showed all the innovations in the design, one of was all wheel drive, which I see from this, never made it into production. I enjoyed this video and glad it wasn't narrated by AI or if it was, it was a good version. That car was awesome. That year it came out ESPN had ex NASCAR racers and even Paul Newman raced em in summer that year.

I sat in one once on a tour of the Jaguar factory. I'm 6' 2" tall and the roof is so low I could not sit upright in the car and had to lean my head/neck at 45 degrees just to get into the drivers seat. I've been thinking that they should use the bodystyle with a few updates to things like the squared tail-lights, updated engine technological
advancements such as superchargers, etc., update interior functionality for comfort and immersion in a sort of symbiotic feeling like being "one" with the car...if they keep the bodystyle with a few tweaks in more modern design to rear lights and more refined interior design and use updated tech methods for the engine and keep it mid-engine it would probably do really well provided the economy recovers and they offer it in a vast array of colors as well as developing additional body modifications for functionality variables...more reliablity for higher pricepoints are generally required if a company hopes to make a generous profit from such a product. Superchargers, twin turbos cumulative spool boosting (one lower end start the other at mid rpm to high) for example...V-8, V-6, V-10, V or W12 and the same for 16s with quad turbo options, and possible additional electric motors on front end for build up acceleration improvement in 0-60mph.
Sadly our any feedback can't do anything now

It didn't sell because in those days a V6 with turbo was not acceptable as an engine for flagship top of the line car. It felt as a let down, even if it had enough Power and top speed.
The xj220 disappointment has stayed in the memory of jaguar so long it caused Jaguar to shelve the spectacular cx75 concept. A car that would have been a boon to jaguar and boosting the brands prestige. Jaguar is a shell of itself today. So sad

With the re-commitment to IC engines by European car companies, I hope that Jaguar makes a V12 supercar someday
Maybe
JLR is switching to EV completely. I doubt, aside from specialist racing vehicles, that we will ever see their new internal combustion engines. The 1990s were a rough period economically and genuine customers for such cars were very rare (more speculators than real purchasers).
Even the McLaren F1 failed to meet its sales targets.
With respect to the XJ220, there were a huge number of problems.
The major initial problem was clearly the V12. It has always been a low efficiency boat anchor. At its best, the V12 engine was producing under 60 bhp per litre in road format (less than a MGB engine which was designed in the 1950s). What were they even thinking announcing this car with this engine ?
It was at this point that the XJ220 should have stopped.

Those were the days that wedge designs were out, and everything had to be round.
I can't judge the technical performances nor the comfort of the interior (but who makes such silly mistakes as doors that don't open sufficiently ?), however, I can't say I'm in love with the design of the car. It's "not bad", but it leaves me lukewarm at best, depending on which colour the car got (I wasn't a fan of the Bugatti either). The Jag simply looked too long for a production model, it probably rarely fitted a parking lot. The design simply lacks that "timeless" quality of the best designed cars. It looks "terribly" 1990's, while for example the somewhat forgotten "baby Countach", the Bravo still looks modern 50 years after its introduction. A combination of straight lines and curves, some pinch lines here and there without overdoing it work better than this "everything round" approach. I'd give the design not more than a 7/10, the Bravo 8,5 to 9, just like the McLaren F1

It must be about time for a Jaguar XJ320. Bugatti have had it their way for long enough.
Yeah there’s a bloody good reason of why it didn’t sell very good?! Was because all the customers got fucked over on the engine they were getting, they were told the car WILL be getting a V12 lump when instead they got a shitty V6 lump so underpowered for the size of the car?!!! I would be pissed as well……I mean why didn’t they just go for just 2 extra cylinders and make it a V8 instead that wouldn’t have been so bad? Would it?
It seems like the car's engine got lost in translation! Perhaps the V12 dream ended up being a V6 reality.

Great upload. Beautiful & excellent car, unfortunately with a poor company backing leading it to its (predictable) demise, as so many. The worlds has many more exquisite cars past & present (& future). The best? Yes for Jaguar, for the world, not really. too much resemblance (in every aspect) to what has been developed before. Other cars/brands were much more 'their time ahead'. One only has to consult few proper car encyclopedia and an open mind to what (automotive technological wonders) has been created in the past and also was 'little or not' properly communicated.
