Great tutorial. After many other tutorials, I finally understand how to create automations.
An automation I just thought of is so simple. But so good. Where we live, leaving our windows open is common. Sometimes we close them and don't change the AC. So now my home tells me when the temperature is out of range. If it's above 75 or below 50

Nice job Allen. Clear and very useful for us new to HA. Is there a solution to the challenge of having both smart switches AND smart lights in the same room or scene? Would like to see an automation with Adaptive or Circadian lightning.

Very impressive! I have a lot of similar setups - but using Node-red for all automations though ;)
I have some automations, that do work to a certain point...
There is one automation, that doesn't work all the time. I think, the smart plug is broken somehow: It is set to turn on at sunset and turn off at 1 am. Doesn't work all the time. Even after a reset ... And another automation is set to make some smart bulbs a specific color and brightness on a special voice command, which only works for the brightness...I think, I have to replace these specific devices

Those are some great automations. I've found that motion sensors are great for turning lights on when you come into a room, especially if they are run locally. However in the case of wanting to turn them off when you leave the room timers do not seem to work so well. Found that you either have to set them to wait a long time to keep them from turning off the lights if your not moving around a lot (like when reading or working on the computer) or they leave you in the dark if you set the time to short. I'm using some esp32's and firmware called espresense to tell HA what room i'm in. Works a lot better.
I've got a few ESP32s here that I recently bought to test with ESPresence. I'm looking forward to trying out how it works!

@@patrickpaganini also have found that while you can use your phone as a ibeacon for the esp32's it's somewhat slow to respond. I happened upon a solution however, found a beacon from a company called bluecharm and bought there BC021beacon, very small and much quicker to be seen by the esp32's, plus it has a button on it that when pressed you can set it up so it can run whatever automations you want. Nice thing about that is it can run different automations in each room, plus it has single press, double press, triple press and press and hold tiggers for EACH room you have a esp32 in along with motion triggering as well. like having 6 beacons for each room 😀

Love the light automation, i have an LG Web OS Smart TV and a Chromecast Ultra and it works really well but not when watching Netflix, no clue why!
Thanks Alan...I watch your videos since you started your channel...I love the way that you "think outside the box"...I have been using HA for 2+ years....I am really interested in the Frigate integration, but this may be above "my pay grade"...LOL Please keep up your great interesting content...:)
Frigate by itself is not complex, it uses mqtt for messaging and will work with any camera that supports RTSP streams (most do)... Object and people recognition requires a bit more setup and a LOT more processing power. Keep it simple if using a raspberry pi or similar.. Add these extras including zones slowly to judge how much impact they have on the cpu... 🤪
@@MrSupersidewinder thanks, Pal...I have not had HA on a pi for 2 years now...The cameras are all Reolink...HA is currently on a virtual machine on Hp Elite desktop mini (Proxmox), and I also run it on a VM (Virtual Station)on my Qnap NAS TS673...I have not been able to purchase a Coral since the start of the pandemic...:(
Good stuff. I use node-red at the moment to do this kind of thing, but I'm thinking of moving all the simpler logic to Home Assistant because of your videos.
I've been thinking of giving node-red a go, but haven't had the time yet. I've been able to get everything I've wanted to do working with general Home Assistant automations so far

Great video as always. I would like to see a video of how you adapt your automations to take into account your partner. For example what do the lights around your TV do when only one of you gets up to go get a snack.

Something else that would be very helpful is recommendations for reliable zigbee common devices. I have been using x-10 stuff since it came out and still have 16 or more functioning devices. While I would like to be able to control them in HA I am willing to switch now. I for example need plug in lamp modules (dimmable), Heavy appliance modules (15a 1800watt), light switches (decora style), 3 way light switches and their slaves... Many dimmable modules I have looked at are rated at 10a, are not UL listed, buzz loudly (reviews), flicker at low levels, covers pull off exposing high voltages... etc... I don't want to try a pile to find good stuff, I'd like to bulk order high quality items up front... Everyone coming into home automation/control will want these items regardless of the tech behind them... (zigbee, zwave, wifi). A best of the best video is in order, you could be the one to bring it forth!!!

How do you power everything? You must have power cords running everywhere to the strip lighting and the blinds?
How do you make a dumb ceiling light smart? Do you just switch in a Phillips hue light bulb and leave the power switch on?
Replace the switch with a smart switch... This gives you BOTH, local and remote control... Use smart bulbs only where you need/want color control or for lights not controlled by a switch... eg. Basement lights on pull strings...
The lightstrip has a pretty long, and thin, power cord that I've tacked to the skirting boards to try and keep them neat. They then plug in to an outlet that is nearby the stairs.
I'm unfortunately renting this place, so I can't really do much more than that. If I owned the house I would wire them in permanently in a better way
That would be my suggestion too. Or take a look at WiFi relays like Shelly which can be put behind the normal switch and make it smart
I would like to do the same automation you explain on chrome cast on my Samsung Smart Tv, but with the integration I have I can only make automations based on TV volume. Do you know how to do it?
Do you know if there's a way to automatically turn off stove when everyone is out of the house? Wondering how one would go about this

I tried to use your tamplate trigger next alarm. Is there a way to just trigger it with android (samsung) alarm clock? It triggers by all calendar alarms too.
So a tip. If you don't have brightness sensors, but you do have solar panels, you can use the solar panel production to determine how dark it is outside.

@@HomeAutomationGuy well, if it's grey and cloudy it's also 'dark' outside ;) I live in the Netherlands, same blissful climate, and have a 3000wp array. I have the limit set on 300 because that's when it gets dark inside when the panels go below that number. You probably have to tune that number a bit for your situation. This could also be during the day in wintertime, but that's when you want the lights on, when there's not enough light outside.
@@HomeAutomationGuy only snow on the panels could disrupt the correlation between power production and brightness inside, but I have to experience that first. There's not a lot of snowfall these days.

I've just never looked into Node-Red so I have no experience with it. A lot of people use it and it looks really powerful. It's definitely something I'll look into in future if I have more time

Do you use Alexa at all? What is the best way to migrate away from integrations within Alexa to HA? Do you connect them to HA and then delete within the Alexa ecosystem or how does that work?
At the 1:00 mark you have a Sonos button that looks like it opens a menu. Could you do a video about how you integrate Sonos for home assistant? I use a custom media player for it but Im not happy with the design as I haven’t gotten it to look like the rest of my Mushroom dashboard
This is actually the Google Home app showing my Sonos in that. I don't really integrate my Sonos that well into Home Assistant at the moment, as I started to use more Google Speakers.

Thanks for the great video. Just a small question, if we want to use location base automation. For example i want to use a automation like when i leave from home if one window is open, sent a notification like " Window x is open!" for this automation, do i need a vpn or cloud ? I'm using iphone and homeassistant mobile app has full access to the location information but when i left from home my automation is not working. I had to open mobile app. Afterthat it's updated my location and i could get notification. The reason can be vpn or cloud ? Do we have to vpn or cloud for this automations? I asking because other notifications can came without vpn/cloud at outside.
I suggest using Home Assistant Cloud (Nabu Casa) for this. It costs a few dollars a month, but it helps support the Home Assistant community and also gives you access to your Home Assistant when you're away from your house without VPNs etc. I made a video about it here which may help you see the benefits: ua-cam.com/video/mA4nFJj2mxE/v-deo.html

Hi, I love your videos. I'm currently facing a "problem" I have a coffee machine that takes 30mins to be ready for brewing. I would like to automate the machine and also a towel warmer. The trigger should be my alarm clock. Something like: When I set my alarm on my cellphone (Android) set a timer so the coffee machine wakes 30 minutes earlier and the towel warmer 15 minutes earlier. Or even better, at a certain nighttime ask me if I want to set the alarm for tomorrow, then if a want to have some coffee in the morning, and if I will take a shower to set up everything. I have smart plugs (wifi), Intel NUC (not yet configured) and the app Tasker and AutoRemote. Could you give me some advice? Thank you and keep up the good work!
You could use Tasker to monitor alarms on your android phone and communicate the data via MQTT to your automation engine (whatever it is).
is there a step by step to do this? I would love push to my phone but dont know how to set it up or how to turn off and on lights by time of day

I am unable to get the tv automations to work. I am using a firestick so I am not sure if it wont is is different than chromecast. any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.

Is your TV a smart TV.My TV is not smart but i can switch it over from cable to firestick using alexa and ask it to play music films etc.But I cannot change it back to cable,I have to use my TV controller.
Anybody using a zigbee handheld remote? Is there something with no screen, lots of buttons etc, one can use to control things without any 'smart' devices??? I have been accustomed to a 16 unit x-10 controller and really want something similar in zigbee, always ready no bootup, no screen, quick and easy. On Off Dim Bright...
How does HA know "residents" state is Home or Not Home? What communicates this? RFID tag? Bluetooth chip? Cell Location?
A combination of Cell location and what WiFi SSID the device is connected to. Check out some of the presence detection videos on my channel for more details

If you're using Home Assistant it can be any Amazon Echo, Google Speaker or many of the other supported media devices.

Like your videos. I would like to add my 2 cents worth (we use cents here in Oz).
Whilst you can use multiple vendors, it does introduce other issues, namely Multiple Points of Failure, especially if people use WiFi. All that needs to happen is that there is a bug in one of the vendors software/hardware and a person war driving can then hack into your system.
The other thing that people need to watch out for is whether "ET" is phoning home. That is, what sort of information is the wireless charger/wall plug etc, sending back to the vendor. Have you used a product such as Wireshare to check for this? Have you done something to your firewall to prevent this?
Ideally, people wouldn't be using wireless products and things would be hard wired, however, I know that this is wishful thinking. Retro fitting say ethernet/fibre cable through walls is very challenging.

Agreed!!! Avoid using your main network for most things. Zigbee is a much better choice at this time.
I am new to Home Assistant and looking at old UA-cam of Home Assistant installs is very confusing.
If you have done any Home Assistant UA-cam videos and included Yaml edit and it is no longer necessary with the new release 2023.7.
Please redo the UA-cam video.

I took your advice and searched for docker compose vscode... I found nothing useful. Found a YT video installing vscode in docker for home assistant and adopted what I could... 6 hours later managed to get a working vs code on port 8443. It starts it its config directory where I CAN edit files. Opening a terminal shows me as user abc@2f468345783 can't switch to sudoku cause it asks for this user's password. I can't find where to set the user info. I'm mostly there but need a boost. There are extensions for HA integration, yaml, and more, this would be a game changer editor... I tried some SSH extensions hoping for some user setup configurations without much luck... STUCK BUT SOOOOO CLOSE... 🥵 Please consider doing a few more docker compose videos... MQTT, MQTT2ZIGBEE, ESPHOME, NODE RED, VSCODE, These form the core of most good HA systems imo...
