Donna Willis. Wearing masks lowers your oxygen level in your blood by 15 to 20% and raises your heart rate . It puts stress on your body that will impact on your immune system. Stamford University did a study on surgeons. They dont protect you from viruses. They were never ment to be used for that.

I'm particularly sensitive to a mask rubbing my mouth as I try to speak, so I appreciate the extra room given by the Jesse Mask. I made it even better suited to my needs by sewing a 6" piece of fairly heavy wire (with looped ends) to the inside of the outer layer of fabric, above and parallel with my mouth. I shaped it so that I've got a wire cage that holds the fabric completely away from my mouth, even when I breathe in. In order to accommodate the extra volume this creates, I needed to go up a quarter inch size in the nose to chin measurement. Thank you, Fabric Patch, for sharing your experience and knowledge! Stay well!

I am a grocery worker and we are required to wear masks to work. I have tried many masks. Today I tried a Jesse Killion mask and I looove it!!! I love that it comes in different sizes and addresses all of the previous problems that I have had with masks: sore ears, gaps from poor fit, bunched up liner/filter, liner plugging my nose when breathing in, glasses fogging up and sore nose bridge from seams. Thank you for this pattern! I will still put in a cushion of t-shirt material along the the nose edge to protect my nose and create a better seal. It was also easy for me to make and hand sew. I wear mine "like a necklace" every day at work. I only have to put my face covering on when I answer the door. Which is usually only for UPS, FedEx and USPS. :) I think the analogy was spot on. Kind of like reading glasses on a lanyard. You wear them all the time "like a necklace" and only put them on when they're needed.
I have been using CraftPassion's pattern since the beginning. I like it a lot. I have finally figured out my preferred "tie" method. I create "tubes" at the sides of the face covering and loop a 38-40" piece of Paracord from the bottom (creating a permanent loop to go around the neck) and then attaching the two ends with a cord lock. Makes it adjustable for anyone to wear and easy to put on and take off.

All of your videos are extremely instructive and I would like to thank you for this "What we've found..." video of what has worked and not worked so well. I also would like to point out, especially to your viewers who've expressed concerns over the center seam (17:37), is that we must remember that none of these masks protects us from contracting this or any other virus, but helps to prevent the person wearing the mask to not spread the virus to others (symptomatic or asymptomatic). For those of us who are wearing them without having the virus out of respect for our fellow neighbor or have been 'mandated' by their government officials- sick or not, these are perfectly fine for non-medical use in our everyday lives, but not in a clinic or hospital (the addition of the Hepa filter does make these fit for those situations where close contact with many people can't be avoided - whether they have the virus or not). Referencing here from information from NIH, CDC and some of the medical staff created videos here on You Tube asking for this Coleman mask style for hospital usage (they would be providing the Hepa filter, nose wire, face tape and ear pieces for custom fitting) if you wanted to help by donating them to the hospitals. I hope that this information helps your viewers who have concerns about the center seam holes in this Coleman style mask. Great job to everyone at the Fabric Patch!

Thank you so much for your service in making masks for essential workers and also for providing us all with the benefit of your experience. I’ve made several T-shirt masks each for my husband and me, sewing them by hand w/ a sleeve over the bridge of the nose for a better fit-the sleeve is for the metal strip. The best one used one of those coffee bag ties. Those are da bomb!!! Made a few w/ gathers across top edge to see if that would help the fit. Ours use a paper towel filter (disposable after each use.) Nothing a nurse could use for sure :-/, but OK for situations where we’re trying to social distance anyway. We live in NYC, where at the peak, over 500 people were dying *per day*-that was the confirmed cases. They think this was actually more like 700 deaths per day, at the peak. Sewing exacerbates my hand problems, so I had to take a hiatus from mask making recently. Must see my wonderful doctor in July and want to create a better mask so I don’t expose her to my germs. Will use one of your patterns. Thanks again! I really appreciate your help and generosity sharing knowledge with us! Stay safe everybody! We’re all in this together.

The rubber coated makes a better fit and is softer when shaping.

I just made one modification and found that it fits better now; instead of sewing a lower strap on each side I sew a casing on the bottom of the mask and used one long strap from one end to the other so that I can fasten it how tight I like. the bottom of the mask would fit perfectly whether the pattern fits your chin 100% or not, by pulling the strap from both ends it will take the shape of your chin. IDEA for nose seal: in addition to copper wire sewn into the mask, we add a piece of weather strip along inside top edge. This seals off exhaled and inhaled air, and protects eyes.
If the mask has a good seal around the face, the air (potentially laden with virus) will blow out the top into the eyes, which are a portal of entry to the respiratory system. So, in addition to a copper wire nose piece sewn into the mask, a strip of weather stripping (self adhesive foam)along inside top edge, completes the seal. 3/8” or 1/2” works for my face.
Secondly, cloth ties elastic ties don't tighten enough to keep a good seal. Instead we use 4 velcro straps: 2 up over crown of head and 2 pulled back under ears to back of head. Fitting is a 3 step process: 1) put mask on and connect top two straps over crown; 2) connect lower two straps behind the head; 3) adjust top two straps, pulling up and back to complete the seal. We used a sewing awl to stitch the velcro.

I've used really "puffy" chenille pipe cleaners, bought on Staples, com, really long ones set of 24, cut to size gives me MANY nose pieces. Turn "in" the cut ends and squeeze with needle pliers and they will not cut you. Fibers will not come off. Resulting pieces are slipped into the nose sleeves that I make on inside of each mask, removable for washing masks, replaceable as needed. Cheap solution which makes for comfortable nose piece (I have facial nerve pain and nose are is especially sensitive, so if it's comfortable for me it should be comfortable for most people.). I do not like the thinner pipe cleaners at all. Just sharing.....

Thanks to all who volunteer their time and materials to help others. For those who charge, I know you need to in order to feed your families (from those I've spoken to) and I don't hold anything against you. The nurses in my family have really appreciated getting the masks. I'm interested in making them more comfortable because one wears her masks for 12 hours at a time. They have gotten compliments by people on the street who asked if I could make them one and how much would I charge. I explained to my cousin and the porter that I couldn't possibly accept any monetary compensation as we are in a global crises and all of us need to be safe. For the nose piece I've been using the green plastic coated wire from the garden supply that is used to tie new trees to keep them upright. Also, near the top I just sew a little tack, maybe three stitches wide back and forth. Once the user bends the nose piece to fit it stays in place. And I leave a small opening at the bottom so that the nose piece can be taken out to wash the mask and the filter can be replaced.

We’ve been making many of these and appreciate your tips. After a few hundred we’ve adjusted our designs and find the following works well
    1. fold over the ends at the ears and sew and slid the elastic through.
    2. Our masks have washed well like yours. We were concerned with the elastic wearing and wanted the ability to change that out. Works great and also gives us the ability to change from over the head to ear loops. We’ve found over head fits better but, some have mobility issues that prevent them from placing masks over head.
    3. One other tip we’ve found works well is adding elastic along the bottom middle (about 4 inches). Provides a very nice seal.
    4. We’ve also split our inside material into 2 halves (with generous overlap). This provides an easy way to change filter material out. We’ve been using the Filti filter material that is rated up to 95% @ .3microns. We had used side pockets but found them difficult to get filters into.
Thank you for all your advice.

Thank you for the alternative pattern. I was thinking the same thing about the cup shaped pattern I was using (probably same or similar one to yours) - that it can come down a little further under the eyes and stick out a little more from the face. I thought to make my own pattern but was worried about screwing it up. I will try Jesse's!
I use pipe cleaners as nose pieces and I don't just put them in on the nose but across the entire top of the mask which gives a better fit.
I started making my masks with t-shirt strips. Instead of tying one pair on the neck and one at the top of the head, I take both straps from each side in one hand and tie all 4 into one bow and it holds great. After making a ton of those, I discovered elastic shoelaces which come with their own toggles! Now I sew side channels into my masks and pull the shoelaces through. One for each mask. No cutting or fraying. You end up with two loops that go around the back of the head, and adjusting the top one also adjusts the bottom one because they are connected and run through the side channels. The shoelaces I got were $1.50 a pair, so 75 cents for a mask.
For polypropylene I use shrub winter bags, 60 gram weight. They are not treated with anything.
Thanks as well for the tip to staggering the seams, though I don't think that really helps because the middle area isn't connected and the seams won't sit in whichever way you align them. The biggest problem is with the seam in the polypropylene but from me perspective, it's the best we can do, and it's never going to be 100% effective. It's still effective in keeping your own breath from spreading to others.

The Hoover vacuum company has responded to enquiries about use of filters in face masks. They advise against it due to breathability issues. The fabric of a vacuum filter is manufactured to be strong enough to withstand the powerfull suction of a vacuum. Your lungs are not powerfull enough to breath through them. However, I have seen these masks recommended by at least one doctor, whose wife made them for him.; so, I guess it's a matter of how well you can breath through them.
There are two issues with regard to furnace filters. The cheap ones are made of fiberglass, which you definitely do not want to have next to your face. Only the flat ones are fiberglass, the pleated ones are not. They are also easier to breath through. The second issue is the MERV rating, which is a standard used to indicate what size of particles the filter can strain out. Again, you're going to need the more expensive types.
With both types of filter, the key drawback is that they are not very reusable. Any kind of cleaning will damage the electrostatic charge, rendering them ineffective after two cleanings.
I have seen studies showing that ordinary t-shirt or tea towel material can be effective at filtering 50-69% of corona sized particles. This is obviously unsuitable for surgical staff, but better than nothing at all for Joe Public who are limiting their exposure in the first place.
I am an elderly person who didn't get out much before the plague, so haven't changed my lifestyle much. I wear a bandana mask with a paper towel filter inside and find even that difficult to breath in. My solution is to just become more efficient in my shopping and get it over quicker.

And tbh...as a dental hygienist who has an extreme risk for respiratory droplets we are being required to see a pulmonologist for fit testing of masks prior to wearing. The effects of wearing a high filtration mask over hours varies in each person and oxygen saturation/carbon monoxide output. Some people cannot wear an N95 or even a level 3 safely. I love the video and info but just wanted to let people know current concerns.

Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise in FL is cutting both straight and curved pieces of stainless steel for nose pieces for masks. They sell as few as 10, for $5, and also in larger quantities. These can be sewn inside your masks, or even on the outside. They have a small hole at each end of the strip. I sewed mine into the seam allowance after I stitched the mask, next to the outer layer to keep it farthest from your skin. They are sturdy but flexible enough to bend to fit easily. You can read a lot of comments on their page from people who have used them. They have donated many of these to people making large amounts of masks to donate and by making these, they have been able to keep their employees working. Mine came in 3 days. Last I saw Walmart has these too. My daughter’s school would give these out durning a walk -a -thon at school. One loop for each time around the school and playground. So when looking for elastic I thought of these, they are softer than elastic and very stretchy. It may be best to use a pony bead as a slide to adjust. Just cut loop and tie knot on ends so the pony bead stays on.

I use a pattern like yours but add a little more to the bottom edge so I can make a casing for the elastic to go from one end to the other and through for ties. I sew it across the casing in the middle so it doesn’t get pulled out. This makes it fit very snugly under the chin. I also sewed a non woven interfacing into the middle for a filter. My last step, (they keep evolving) has been to fold the top of the filter down to enclose a wire before I sew it in.

I think I was guilty of asking some of the ‘answered’ questions. :). One tip on the Type III 4mm 550 paracord to make the paracord straps far more comfortable and far easier to tie and stay tied. If you cut one end of the paracord, pull the 7 inner strands out a couple of inches and clip them off, pull them back and heat-seal the end (which you’ve shown in the video)... but then cut the other end and pull the 7 inner strands >> all the way out

Also, with paracord, I've been making eyelets in the four corners to run a single strand of the paracord (stripped of the inner cording) through them. This makes it easy to remove the ties for washing, as I find sewn-on ties tend to bind around each other in the wash. Also, because the lower "ties" are an unbroken loop, only the upper set need to be tied. Using a spring loaded "cord stop" makes securing your mask with one hand a snap!

When I realized early on that elastic was going to be impossible to find, I started to sew buttons on all four points that the elastic would be sewn in the masks. Then I made loops on each end of my elastic to fit over the buttons. Multiple masks can be used with the same two pieces of elastic when done this way.

With the shoe lace tie method, I found that one 36 in lace was a perfect fit for an adult mask..Instead of cutting shoe lace, I used 1 lace and a safety pin to thread thru both side seams of mask creating a loop that fit over the head to the back of neck like a necklace and you just lift mask up, pull side laces upwards and tie to the back of the head...no need to double tie...or use more than 1 lace.

Do not wear your mask like a piece of jewelry and touch the front of it multiple times a day...please once it is on, leave it on, germs will collect on the front of the mask - when you are done wearing it please take it off by the ear loops and put it in the laundry immediately - you should always always avoid contaminating yourself with the front of the mask...also do not contaminate the inside of the mask by touching the front and then touching the inside...

Polypropylene (PP) is used in a lot of products, including common food containers like yogurt containers.
Food containers made of PP have the number "5" in the center of the triangular recycle symbol and says "PP" below the triangle.
It is also used in toys & baby products. It does not contain plasticizers (like BHA, and other endocrine disruptors).
It is very similar to Polyethylene, which is what gallon plastic milk jugs are made of, also food safe.
Polypropylene starts with 3 carbon chains that are polymerized to make polypropylene.
Compared to Polyethylene, the milk jug material, which is made from 2 carbon chains--polypropylene's longer chains give it better properties in tension--similar to how longer natural fibers gives fabrics made from it better strength in tension.
I just wanted to clarify a little more about Polypropylene (known as "PP" in the plastics industry).
It is food safe, and should not irritate skin. I agree not to burn and inhale it, that could create toxic compounds, but swallowing PP beads would just pass right thru you. I worked in the toy industry for the better part of 3 decades and we used PP in infant products because it was safe for teething babies.
Both Polypropylene and Polyethylene are quite safe (both are in the "polyolefin" family.
In fact, a form of Polyethylene (HDPE) is routinely used in orthopedic implants (knee replacements, disc replacements, etc.) and has been for at least 30 years.
