- What a great day out here at Hampton Downs, south of Auckland, New Zealand for the Official Unveiling of Mad Mike's new whip, the tubular chassis 787...D! As in Drift!
Being the 787B one of Mike's favorite cars ever (and ours too), it's only logical if his new drift car is a distant cousin of the infamous LeMans 1991 winner, just with a different touch: the World's first 5-rotor engine!

It different from the 787B as it had the 4 rotor in the back of the car where this 787D is front engine layout rear wheel drive. It insane to take the idea to the next level

yes that's correct, at least the bodywork and the chassis. Everything else was made or assembled here in NZ
Anything ROTARY Mazda I'm in, started building RX7s in the early 80's, higher rev's,way fewer moving parts, no mass,lower center of gravity,lighter,create your own BIG BLOCK just add rotors. The potential is endless. The sanctioning race bodies have all but banned them from professional Motorsports,what does that tell you.The normal have always been scared of rotarys because they didn't understand them. But we're ABBY NORMAL , high risk high rewards
very true, in fact the rotary engine is a great platform that offer numerous advantages compared to traditional pistons. Maintenance might be one of the only concerns but the overall results you get are worth all the effort
I just picked up the hotwheel version of this car. I saw it was for mad Mike but I didn't know anything about this car. Glad to see it's actually a real thing. It's awesome.

Yeah it's a bit more growlish than the 4 rotors
Exhaust may not be true equal length given the positioning. That will alter the sound quite a bit. Need to hear it as full tilt.

Wait it's front engine?
Better for drifting. More controllable when the weight is in the front. Easier to steer when there's more weight over the front, and less weight on the rear allows the rear tires to break loose more consistently.

Why did they make the tube front in 2 pieces? Is it for a failure point or just the method they used? The bar around the strut tower is welded in the center.. I’m just curious no hate
not sure mate I'm not a structural engineer, the chassis and frame was put together by TRA Kyoto Rocket Bunny. Maybe there's some digging that can be done to discover how they conceived it

This car's called d787 chassis is made by Kei Miura in Tra Kyoto shop in Japan
Yes I know that, I was actually one of 5 people at the time that saw it here in New Zealand when it arrived from Japan. The nomenclature '787D' was picked and chosen by Mike to then market the car as his replica of the 787B, just for drift though.
I'm would interested to see how they went about the E shaft in this thing. I wonder what the limits of this engine is griven the length. It sounds insane, definitely want to hear it under load 👌🏼
Someone will have to do an engineering debrief of this setup after the first tests
I know a few companies talked about doing 5 rotor E-Shafts but usually ran into CNC & casting or budget limitations, none of which will be a problem for Pulse. They really are the cream of the crop at the moment.

Yeah that was the plan from the beginning and he says it too on video. What I think it's happening though, he will bring the new MADMAC to Goodwood and leave this one in NZ. Too many cars hahaha

I love the Mazda Rotary engine. Rev to to moon so much fun to drive. Back in the day police cars couldn't catch them. V8 drivers hated them to shift into 5th gear and walk away ruled 💪. I'm not promoting being an idiot. It's just stuff that happened many years ago. The Rotary is a design in its self. Sick engine sound like nothing else. Thanks Mazda Rotary for fun times years ago 👍

The sound is rather unique. It mainly sounds like a 4 rotor but a bit more raw, and the after note sounds a bit like audi's 5 cylinder engines.
Yeah it really does, same thing I noticed. Really interested to see peak torque figures too, as we all know the 4 rotors is already a powerhouse

yes it is, but this one is not a 787B. It's a Mad Mike's interpretation of it and it's called 787D, where D is probably for Drifting (although not confirmed officially yet)
