Taking away the fear one deadpan video at a time. Still chuckling at the bitwig comment.
😂 this comment made me laugh, thanks! It’s hard to try have a laugh when it’s just me in a room looking at a camera talking about nerdy modular stuff so I’m glad the delivery is appreciated haha.
"It does one thing perfectly in a small form factor, like my winky" 🤣🤣🤣 great video
😂 I’m so immature! Hope you’re well my friend. Thanks :)
@@Mavenfiction I'm good bud I hope you are good as well! And I thought that joke was soo funny
Weeing?
'Pam's so popular my mum's got one'. loved that one. Good selection, Marbles is just so good for creativity, can't do without it.
Haha thanks for the comment. Glad it got a laugh. Yeah marbles is really great. I had this thing for a while where I wanted to resist against getting MI modules but I really was being stupid. They’re all awesome.
i’m just getting into modular and ur videos are great, im loving the advice!
Great to hear! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Have you bought any modules yet?
Bravo! Your channel is amazing. Thank you
He said 'Turing machine' but I first heard 'Churro machine'. Sounds good, great vid!
😂😂 genius! Be right back, contacting mutable instruments.
@@Mavenfiction I'll keep an eye out for your review once they drop it lol [subbed]
Good to see you and your ideas. I always leave with contemplation.
Hi, good to have you back! How are you? Glad you enjoyed it!
Always look forward to your vids mate
Wow thanks mate. Comments like this are great motivation. Especially at the minute when I’m trying to invest a bit more energy into UA-cam. Thanks again!
This is the first time I've heard of Ochd and it sounds like exactly the module I've been hankering for! Thanks!
It looks like you really had fun making this video. Lots of good jokes!
Hey man! I honestly love it. It’s an amazing module. I always enjoy putting these videos together but it’s even better when I hear people are finding them somewhat valuable. :)
Oh, you will love it. Have that combine with a quantize module and it is amazing. I use it a lot.
Thanks for the recommendations! Cheers!
No worries mate. This isn’t an exhaustive list of course. :)
thank you Marven,great great!!
😊😊
love the videos you're doing and your style. Just found you today and subbed as soon as I looked through your previous video titles, can't wait to see some of your others :D
p.s. ochd is god-tier desert island module. good choice
Hi just seen this sorry. Thanks my friend.
@@Mavenfiction no worries, glad it reached you :)
Just picked up a Marbles, but gotta wait awhile to use it due to shipping problems 😭
Surface is definitely my fav physical modeling voice. Gotten some realllly cool sounds out of it.
So tempted by the ES-9. Part of me wants to stay out of the box as much as possible, but another part wants to take advantage of my plugin library and Max for Live. Thanks so much for your take on modular stuff.
“My moms got a Pam’s and she doesn’t even have a modular” 😂 too good
@maven I’d enjoy an hour long video on these modules - I know there’s videos by other people, but this video left me wanting more, thanks!
Thanks. I think that’s where I need to take the channel. Longer Longford videos. More music making. 20 minute episodes with a mix of stuff.
Hysterical. More videos please. I’m trying to build a 48hp
Hi thanks for watching and for the comment. More videos are coming :) 48 hp is an amazing size! Small systems are my favourite. What are you thinking of putting in it?
Subbed for the winky line!
😂😂 glad my immaturity is appreciated somewhere! At home it’s received with eye rolls! Haha
I also LOVE !!! the OCHd and got 2 of it.... always have them patched.... but my favorite modulations source by far is the Kermit MKIII.... everyone should have a look a this beast.

“My mom has a Pam’s “😂😂 brilliant video and good info!
Thanks :) haha.
Well, I have #1 and #5, and agree about both. I did consider #2, but couldn’t see that it was going to give me much that Rings doesn’t, so I’ve contented myself with two of their other beasties. I sort of envy you the ability to use Ableton, but hell, I don’t even have a pc, and I’m too old to learn much more new stuff. Nice little video. Have yourself a productive weekend!
Hi again, hope you’ve been well. Thanks for watching and another comment! Surface and rings are both incredibly similar and equally very different. Rings is probably more flexible overall but surface is maybe more instant and repeatable. Love them both. You’re right to stay true to rings though, it’s a modern classic! Ableton is very useful but there’s something special about taking a stereo out to a recorder and sharing whatever happens in the moment. Thanks again for watching. Same to you!
Absolutely love you and your jokes! Thanks for
sharing, will be ordering the mod source as this was something I was missing. Where’s your patron??? Would love to support financially!
Wow thanks. That’s really kind of you to say. My patreon is just Patreon dot com / mavenfiction :) honestly though, watching and commenting is great support in itself. Thanks again!
I agree with Ochd, seeing as it is a very flowing natural source of Modulation. Pams is THE Swiss army knife IMO and Marbles is an advanced shift register. I would throw in a VCO like a dixie 2+. Super standard and straight forward. Great sound as well
And you are soooooo humble😀
Haha I can’t remember what I even said but everything is usually said in jest I assure you. :)
Pleased to see you back streaming , creating lateral thoughts as to gear in the Enigmatic modular Matrix
🖐🎶🆒🔱🕸⚡️👁😎
Thanks for watching and the comment. Feels good to be back! Have a good weekend!
"A bit like my winkie." That made me laugh, y'daft lad!
Just got my Marbles today. Actually I lost my marbles years ago but you know what I mean. Mutable have announced the end of production for all modules, so these are going to become harder to source until second hand (or clones) is the only option. So I thought now was the time to get one. Arrived today and I spent all night blissfully making 70’s sci-fi type noises with Marbles, Beads and Rings. I bloody love modular when it just fires inspiration like that. These are not just products, they’re beautiful musical instruments.
😂 awesome! I saw that yeah, do we have any indications to why? I know they often discontinue one or two and have redone them but apparently this time it’s for good isn’t it? Great to hear that you’ve put it to good use straight away! Nice one. Thanks for the comment.
For Me
1- Harvestman Double Andore MK2
2- Harvestman Kermit MK1
3- Piston Honda MK3
4- Joranalogue Step 8
5- Make Noise Morphagene
But i’m the end Whatever you gel with and whichever you take the time to learn and abuse
Your mom's got a Pam's 😂😂. Great vid, thanks
Glad I bumped into this video, you solved a dilemma I had for modulation. I'd forgotten about Ochd, it's exactly what I needed, and it means I can finally remove another module, freeing up space for something else.
However, the bad news is that you've made me very curious about the 4ms SWN, which although expensive, as you say, with its 6 VCOs is actually probably better value for money than many other possibilities.
Glad it’s been of some assistance. I love the OCHD. I do hate when I fuel peoples purchasing compulsions though, sorry haha. I’m seriously bad for buying loads of stuff I don’t need. That said get a SWN. It’s great 😂
@@Mavenfiction No problem. In my case, I've been hesitating to replace a very standard Doepfer quad LFO, which is fine, except that's all it does * 4. So, I thought about buying another LFO, but this looks very interesting - especially all the various possibilities.
I have the SWN, it’s mind bending
@@aeropilot4419 It's on the top of my list along with the NerdSeq.
Nice one! Marbles looks really interesting, but I usually DIY my Mutable stuff and I don’t think I’m quite ready to build that one yet! Just finished building a Grids though, so that’ll be the next one I’ll explore! And the ochd is at the top of my list now! Wanted to get it for ages, but I have other modulation sources so it wasn’t a priority. I think it’s time though 😅
You DIY’d a grids 😮 that is hugely impressive! I have grids and I love it but it’s huge haha. I’m desperate to pick up a second Ochd. In fact I’m ready to build a whole new case haha. Thanks for the comment :)
@@Mavenfiction grids definitely is quite big, especially when you consider that it doesn’t even have that many components on the board! I’m still fairly new to SMD soldering so I thought it was good practice to deal with something fairly spacious before I try my hand on some of the smaller clones! I often prefer the smaller versions, but they are intimidating to build. Luckily my case is modular too and 3D printed, so if I need more space for the bigger versions, I just add another row!
And you’re planning a whole new case? That’s cool, what do you have in mind for it? Right now I have half my second row detachable, so I can run the system as 6U 104HP or 3U 52HP. I quite like the flexibility of that! The ochd I’m planning to get for the 52HP side. So much modulation in 4HP sounds perfect for it! 😀
@@LillySchwartz is there anywhere I can your case please? I’m so intrigued by a modular case!
@@Mavenfiction With the UA-cam word filter I can't really send you a link, but if you just put eurorack case into yeggi it's the orange one. Not my model, I just printed it and it's a really cool design. There are shallower and deeper versions, a 1u row etc. The guy who designed it still extends it every now and then which is really cool. It prints in sections of 26HP and each section costs about 7€ worth of filament, so it's also quite cheap.
Pal, your vids are reet good like. Made me laugh.
Fantastic. Subscribed. Wish I'd have seen ya sooner
Thanks for watching and for the comment. Always nice to hear that people are getting some value out of my ramblings haha.
Marbles is Turing on LSD. I need one...
😂 it is! I’ve not had it long. I do prefer my actual grids for the triggers than marbles I think the more I’ve played with it over the last couple of days. However, grids is huge and it’s a nice all in one solution with the X side as well.
nice patch 🎵. still no idea what these modules do but they sound cool.
😂😂 thanks and thanks for the comment :)
“A bit like my winky”… dying😂
Nice vid, nice selection, nice, er, jokes 😀
😂😂 thanks Ian.
Ochd is a great module!
Agreed! All modules should be that simple and effective! :)
Great video! Also good to hear another northern accent in modular videos (as well as the OG, DivKid). ES-9 isn’t ADAT btw. It’s SPDIF. If you want to use ADAT then ES-8 is a better choice.
Thank you for watching and for the kind comment. Agh yeah Ben isn’t too far from me actually. I should really drop him a message and see if he fancies hanging out one day over the summer.
Yeah, you’re right. Someone else mentioned that! I just saw optical and presumed they carried it over from the ES-8. I’m still getting my head over what a crazy decision it was to drop ADAT but I’m sure there’s a good reason.
Thanks again!

😂 glad my immaturity is appreciated by someone haha. Thanks.
Ey op lad.
😂😂 Ey up pal!
F IN BRILLIANT MATE 👍
Thanks :) very kind of you to watch and comment.
I'd prefer ochd if it has a second knob to control the range of frequencies. I usually find the fast too fast and the slow too slow.
Oh really? That’s interesting actually. Have you tried running it through an attenuator?
@@Mavenfiction what most people don't realize is that amplifiers are supposed to amplify things, not attenuate them.
Hey man .. liking your comments & suggestions. No long ago, .. I started out with getting MI Beads & MI Rings, along with a Strymon A.A1 to interface analog signals into Beads. Perhaps Rings will work OK, with analog too? .. perhaps not as effectively as Beads, though. Anyway, .. I've been getting some results, with Beads, alone.
Well .. sort of like you've shared, .. one thing lead to another, or anothers .. I started trying to employ Rings, more .. and that has led to how to furnish it with signal so, I got CV.OCD by 64 pixels, thinking that generating MIDI was the deal. But, .. while possible .. it does seem rather laborious, .. to the point, of I forget the purpose, or intent of what I was trying to do. But, .. that's how alot of things go, not?
Just lately, though .. I've been considering MI Marbles, for fulfilling this need? And, of course, Beads would nicely accept Marbles contributions, too.
So, thanks for the sharing of ideas.
I really like my marbles but if I had to get one again I’d use a clone for smaller HP. It’s a big module. But it’s great fun!
Ps thanks for the comment :)
@@Mavenfiction No profound statement here, I realize .. the sound generation possibilities of Erurorack, are wonderful, at this time. Even my humble collection of modules, can do alot .. but on the composition side of things, .. like a Marbles, or the like .. that appears to still be the frontier.
@@kenswanson1093 I guess it depends whether you want more regimented compositions, or more generative free flowing composition. Genre will play a part. I love marbles for experimentation and for fun, however if I wanted repeatable results and it wouldn’t be my go to for cv or triggers.
@@Mavenfiction Right .. it all depends on a person's tastes, eh? In my imagination, if I had Marbles, I think I'd be using the "Deja Vu" alot. Running the "Rate" button slower, and probably clipping out sections of the better parts, .. and running them as loops. The hope being for a "repeatable" sort of thing ..
👍🏼🎯
I like buttons. It is true. I pushed one. Two, even.
Thanks :) I had this hilarious image of me saying thanks and you being like, “yeah I clicked dislike then clicked close on my browser window!” Haha
@@Mavenfiction i kept just on clicking and somehow ended up selling my dog and buying a cat.
@@GeorgeLocke 😂😂 I’ve grown to love cats more anyway so sounds like a good deal. Haha
Pamela workout, bro. I just got it, and for fuck sake, comb that with MI Marbles to clock- it is remarkable.
Bitwig is great daw
The only real issue I have with this is that nannas hands were rougher than a roofers glove.
😂 not mine. She once touched a bubble and her hand burst.
0:14 you're going to say sequencer. *GROAN* they ALWAYS say soulless clockwork sequencers! There shall be no clock before me on MY system EVER! 13 filters? Check. half a dozen oscillators and envelope generator TYPES? done. and spring reverb. THOSE are my kind of essentials. now to see if you give me a heads up on something new that drives me out of my mind like that shapeshifter demo. 1:00 and there you go with CLOCKS! I'm guessing maybe you can do envelopes too. I'll look deeper into marbles. Things that go *techno* make me mad. LOL skipping to 3:00 I'm waiting for you to say Maths. I'll bet whoever a quarter he says maths before the video is over.
How much shall we bet he doesn’t say maths and doesn’t own one? I bet you 1 million pound he doesn’t say maths!
@@Mavenfiction at wiggler, everyone is always beefing on me for hating maths (i like rampage better, but joranalogue & mixers = "best" to me) and i flat out DESPISE sequencers and have gotten sick of arguing with clockers about it. I am the ONLY clock for my music. I didn't get all the way through the video last time at the library. To ME, the purpose of a modular is all the VCOs, filters, effects and envelope generators that'll fit because i'm all about TEXTURES. I just kicked wogglebug (I call it a "babble box") out of my dream rig to make room for a switcher I'm THINKING I could use for envelope switching. I know what I like and want to do. As a beatboxer, my rig would be all about sound design (don't like LFOs either, you need to get sloppy to get funky) and pasting its sounds onto my rhythms. No looping either. I hate repetitive clockwork!!! Oh, that's it, i forgot about this video doing homework on the first 2-3 modules. I'm still trying to learn new modules. Most recently, I got super excited about Doepfer's frequency shifter. It's pure out of tune radio grungy goodness to me... ANOTHER awesome effect.
@@justanotheryoutubechannel3102 that’s the beauty of Modular though right, that it’s bespoke to the users needs? I make pop songs mate so clocks and sequencers are necessary. Then other times I like to make random stuff for fun but even then, I love that with modular you can work with mathematical principles like fractal patterns or stochastic sequences. The frequency shifters on my list but for different reasons. I want to use it to add variation to percussive sounds.
More importantly though… where do I collect my money?
@@Mavenfiction that's my point, in that we are in agreement. the "purpose" of modulars is to tune a system that suits the individual's tastes and needs. that doesn't stop haters from losing their minds that my dream rig has 11 different filter types with stereo PAIRs of SEMs, Ryos and Putneys. That's the entire PURPOSE of my dream, a "room full of synthesizers" (TEXTURES). You can't do R2D2 on a Moog, but it's the bass king. People don't get where I'm coming from (more audio engineer/gearslut). I've HATED ever single cheap Casio & Yamaha I'vr played with because they have a ton of boring useless sounds. I'm a sound first THEN be inspired or paste the sounds you like onto your beats sound design kinda guy, yet haters will argue that "I'm wrong". It's my rig and my outsider priorities. I've got a chip on my shoulder over (lowpass) gatekeeping (HAHAHAHA) trolls because of it. My attempt at humor here was misunderstood.
> SWN
It's super pretty. It's super feature packed. I didn't like it, just didn't jive with it.
> Ochd
I've almost bought it a couple of times but haven't really brought myself to do so... I'll have to consider it.
Great video!
Yeah man, that’s fair enough. There’s loads of modules I want to love but just can’t get behind. That’s the beauty of this game haha.
The Ochd is a pretty wild modulation source. And I don’t mean that in a hip kind of valley girl way. I just mean it does random stuff haha. But I love it for that.
Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment.
Parkour!
😂 I was tempted to splice in some office footage but couldn’t be arsed haha.
My mans is making it super obvious he's reading off a script.
Luckily it’s UA-cam and not the cannes film festival 😂
I like the way you've named the chapters "Module #" instead of the actual module name, so that you keep your recommendations secret to filthy casuals. Maybe hide this secret stuff behind a patreon so that you aren't giving away this kind of secret knowledge away for free to filthy youtube viewers at all.
Yes, what a hardship it is to have to watch visual content rather than just read it with your same eyes.
Maybe you’re right and I should hide it, since making free content for enjoyment just seems to attract moaners.
lol bitwig
Show don't tell.
No
Advice: show less talking head, show more of the modules and their capabilities.
To what outcome?
@@Mavenfiction the outcome is to understand the modules
