This man's music is like no other's. I am captivated. What I love about the comments section is that there are so many soulful and worshipful people here. God bless you all.
The final note is silent: we expect the music to finally come to rest on the tonic, but instead we hear the note above, followed by silence. It remains unresolved. As for the emotion, that's hard to put into words and others have expressed it beautifully. There's a pure intensity to the music that pierces right to the depths of the soul, and maybe what we hear depends on what's lurking in those depths as we listen.
Today I have discovered his music , It is unbeleivable. I must thank Il Corriere della Sera, Italie,s best News Paper for its wonderful Sunday special " LETTURA f wich I never miss , Grazie Corriere per il suo special della domenica !!!!!
Merci
when I listen to it, I cry. It's not the music that makes me cry, I have the feeling that this sound connects me to something deep inside me. As if this music linked me to my soul.
"If a God exists somewhere, seeing the Universe would have make him realize what a terrible mistake was to cause and create it " This music should be the language of that regret!
If such a being exists, they are not looking at the universe through the eyes and perspective of a human being - who, when confronted with the vastness and indifference of the universe may understand it to be "a mistake". Such a being would not witness or experience suffering, death and entropy the way we do. That said, this piece has never evoked feels of grief, existential dread or regret in me. It's only ever evoked serenity and peaceful resignation (to that which I cannot control or change). A beautiful, desired quieting of the mind.
Everything what God created was good, perfect as a creation, but not infinitely good, which allowed it in its freedom to lack of goodness. So, thats what happened, it chose not to serve, not to obey and therefore all evil, suffering and bad stuff came to be. Its easier to explain it in Spanish, so, my apologies if its not completely clear.
Dostoievskij said "Beauty would save the world", and this is the case with every composition of Arvo. So, this great artist is helping God to save the world.
Neither can I. For years I have been listening to very different composers, but this one is something else. It kind reminds me, I don't know why, of Tim Burtom and those dark landscapes... I have to share it with my compations here
For myself this piece holds duality, the constant, and relentless struggle of light and dark. I hear absolute beauty in this music, love, connection, and truth, coupled with the turmoil of loss, fear, and unknowing in equal measure. Life.
It gives me something like shame. The discords make me think "ugly" but also "weak, broken and tortured" and that makes me wonder whether I find the weak, broken and tortured ugly instead of pitying them.
This music gives the impression of a soul trying to ascend to the heavens but always sliding back again and never being able to gain any purchase -always falling back again.Never being able to grasp anything but whatever we try to grasp seems to vanish into nothingness -perhaps this is a metaphor for life and its evanescent nature? There is no certainty of any kind. Then there is extinction and the soul finally finds peace.
In all darkness and evilness of this world, this piece always remings me of God in Christ... It is most amazing that God is source, medium and goal of ALL EXISTING & HAPPENING, Rom 11:36 ὅτι ἐξ αὐτοῦ καὶ δι’ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰς αὐτὸν τὰ πάντα· αὐτῷ ἡ δόξα εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας. Thank you for the upload! Greetings from Germany!
Haunting sad and joyous not so much despair but yes of death and dying departing to the netherworld , of love or of French Cathars and Gnostics praying and practicing their religious rites under the secrecy of star light nights in the countryside ,or of a magician,philosopher/mystic in his library surrounded by books and talismans of age old knowledge and wisdom. or of dark wet narrow twisting cobblestone streets in a quiet city with old looming stone buildings with lead pain windows and hie gable roofs and Gothic cathedrals and abbey churchyards and with the glow of both electric street posts gas light. or of the joys and mysteries of god and heavenly paradise. Most of his music i have herd so far reminds me of most or all of these things truly beautiful.
I felt this sadness once before a long time ago , going home late on a rainy cold night after having been stood up by a girl I so much looked forward to meet . This piece brought it all back to me out of the blue .
We are all hurtling towards death, or the possibility of having no possibilities as Heidegger would say. Every refrain a repetition of the nature of life, like sensing a life slowing extinguished by perceiving the gradual changes in its pulsations and rhythms. Heidegger's reply to Nietzsche's call to an active, joyous way of being is that one can't help but encounter this dreadful possibility with the most profound of sobriety and melancholy. The Ubermensch as an inauthentic and unreliable ideal that can only exist so far as the confrontation with one's own death is more fundamental.
I was at my dad's little painting studio the other day when he put this on as background music. Amazingly cinematic music, this. It just conjures scenes in your mind

Yes
This piece gives me the chills and fills me with dread. It’s beautiful and tragic. I’m fascinated by it, but I’m also afraid to listen to it.
Thanks for trying.
Don’t be afraid, just surrender . . .
😮👏🎻📢📣🔊🎼🎵🎶💫🌟✨🌌🌠🪐
Never ending river of life of pain and love
Wish I'd said that. Wonderful.
So much suffering, wave upon wave. But one must go on in sadness and joy.
Beautiful. Maybe that is why i like it: i have endured strong suffering.
Rear Arvo Pärt for the first time seems like a found a precious treasure between a humanity chaos.

+1 ..Do you also have a lot of pain in your sou..? :(
Merveilleux. Magnifique.
music from heaven.....
it's wonderful
ჯადოსნური მუსიკა !!! maagiline muusika
Sublime!
Hey, that's pretty good!!
Fairly decent.
You think?
I read like 2 dozen comments about pain and life and death and what not before yours came up best comment so far hahaha
Me encanta Arvo...
I use It when I have heardake.

Stop with this pretentious stuff in the comments. It’s just good music
People are trying to express how the music feels to them. It's hard, because music isn't words. Let them express what's in their heart.

Dostoievskij said "Beauty would save the world", and this is the case with every composition of Arvo. So, this great artist is helping God to save the world.
I always said the same thing. Amazing
There is no god, but there is beauty, thank god.
There is a God, and beauty is the proof of it! May God bless you brother!
That true. This composer is very closed to God's World. But he gives us a substitude of Heaven....
Amen
This is the only piece of music I can't explain what I feel each time I hear it
Same here
Neither can I. For years I have been listening to very different composers, but this one is something else. It kind reminds me, I don't know why, of Tim Burtom and those dark landscapes... I have to share it with my compations here
Amen to that
Totally agree I'm sat here crying listening to it
I feel the profundity of silence, how it can be quiet or loud and how it echoes our selves and eternity.
I love the comments Part's music draws: no critiques of the performances. Just how the music affects us. It speaks for itself.
The certainty of death, the Will to live. This masterpiece makes me feel so much pain and despair. It makes me feel powerless and alive.
In response to your comment , I think I need to listen to this piece several times to read into it what you say .

Life.
I sleep whenever I start listening to this piece, it's as if my soul leaves my body
The prepared piano part gives it an out-of-tune/out-of-body feeling...like the soul is leaving the body
Yes years ago i watching a ballet on this music and i could really feel myself floating above my body after a while.

@@Molybdaenmornell You nailed it for me: These sounds make me identify intensely with the weak, broken and tortured.

A great folly to expect extinction and peace at one's demise..... Death is a journey into the unknown .
Sublime, Divino
His music is true voice and music of human mind and thoughts... and its integral part towards divinity...

Beautiful, Paul.
Arte puro, dolor puro
THANK YOU!!!....

This music reaches into the depths of the soul - magnificent!
I don't hear pain. I hear very passionate pleasure. Love that was long awaited
Thank you. I often dislike other people's impressions of the meaning of pieces I love. But I like yours.
It’s the longing.......
Being comforted and a sense of deep compassion is what I feel after listening and reading your comment
Ölüm armonisi.
Silence is to me poesy of words.and arvo's music offers a confirmation of it
The sound is full, but I can see why name of this piece is “sillentium”
Yarın ölebilirim kendimi tanıyamadan.
He has told the story of our time = the tragic withering of life on earth earth and the cosmic glory that will go on.

What is he using for the bell-like sound in the piano?
All dressed up and no place to go.
