This is sadly not surprising. The line between pushing someone to success as a coach or parent (or both) and being either lowkey (or just straight up) abusive is too easy to cross.

Hypothesis: pushing a child to ultimately break world middle distance records is far tougher than hitting them a few times out of frustration or stress. Whilst I have sympathy for the whole family it goes with the territory of extreme performance, as has been evidenced from many other sports e.g. gymnastics, swimming

What a horrible situation to be in as an athlete and as a coach/father. There is a fine line in how far to push an athlete and your child. Those should be two distinct lines. I was also told to never coach a family member or girlfriend/spouse. I crossed that line just once and the end result was not positive. As an athlete I've either experienced some level of verbal abuse by coaches or witnessed it. It's one thing to push an athlete in a positive way and another to break him/her down in a negative way. But there is also a small part of me here that believes this latest generation is the generation of the entitled. For the most part this is the generation that grew up with the "no spanking" sort of mentality. So in these cases even the mildest form of verbal abuse could be easily taken out of context. As I've watched Jacob mature in the sport over the last few seasons and read that his father coached him I told myself there has got to be more to the story than meets the eye. And here it is now. It will be interesting now to see what happens to his running career.

Absolutely tragic. I was an avid follower of the Team Ingebrigtsen series and seen many times how all the brothers have interacted with their family and particularly their father. I can’t see for a second that any of the brothers weren’t confident enough to confront their father. I’m sure Gjert is a good man and doesn’t deserve to be treated like this. I hope they can achieve a reconciliation

It doesn't take much googling to figure out who he was violent against. Kudos to the three brothers for reacting as all brothers should in that situation.
As they themself implied in their letter. It was one thing when it happened to themselves, but seeing a younger sibling being abused they had to put a stop to it.

I am 10000% with you, the most important thing is keeping family business in house. Obviously, if there was a crime committed, outside help is needed, but in NO CIRCUMSTANCE is going to the media the solution. It sounds like he was a disciplinarian who used physical methods of parenting and hit the daughter. That's the problem with these vague statements: if you're not willing to share the full details, the public will fill them in for you. The fact is, there are other ways they could have gone about this, since they ultimately need to reconcile with their father. The only thing worse than physical abuse is tearing apart the family unit. As for Gjert: there is no reason why he couldn't achieve the same results without physical discipline, the parenting style needs to be separated from the coaching success in any analysis of the situation.
For example, if the physical discipline extends to domestic violence, one of the brothers could temporarily house the victimized individual until Gjert gets therapy. They could even go to the police for help without going to the media and sharing vague details of what occurred, knowing that it would go viral.
In reality, we don't even know what actually happened, what we know is that the children accused the father of some sort of violence and abuse. We don't know the extent of the situation, what constitutes "violence" in this instance, or who was the focus of this recent alleged incident. The prudent thing to do is let it play out before demonizing Gjert, especially since the oldest brother has denied that any of this happened as alleged.

@@oceanxivit wasn't the brothers who filed a complaint against him... Someone else in the family did that.
In their letter, the brothers actually say that they didn't want to go to media or police, but they had to when Gert was violent to someone else in the family too.

Their father was a bully, who bullied their boys and family, so now the boys are grown so wouldn't they become as the father a bully. So maybe there's some truth that some of the people that are saying that they are bullies. This might just be the case. Like father like son. I don't know personally any of this. I only know that I enjoy watching Jakob run. I am a 1-mile and 1500 m runner. I have learned a lot from watching Jacob run.

Gjert is a engaged, outgoing and tempered man, with a big love for his family and wanting the best for the family. It's not hard to imagine that on occations he has been very engaged and pushed his sons quite hard regarding training and lifestyle. Some of the children are more sensitive than others and have dealt with it in a harder way than others. People do not get wolrd champions by having 'nice' trainers, but need someone pushing them hard. When the sons got 20 years+ or so and their sport got really serious the father should have stepped down earler and let others train them. If the father was a bully for real, his marriage would been over long time ago.

Wives standing by their husbands, that might be so. Not difficult to imagine he has been tough at times, but they would likely not been at the level they are without toughness. He has wished the best for his kids, not been tough out of evil. What's done is done. Kind of silly to take it to the courts, just makes things worse. they are a big family, several grown up kids now, strange they could just not sorted this out within the family, been done with it and moved on. The boys have found nice wives, about to create their own families, and continue their carrieres, seems to be doing well, even with some toughness in their teens from their father. Big boys now, stronger than their father, why not give him a real beating as a 'thank you', shake hands, be done with it. @@Hypotetiskt

You are making too much of it ,he’s a harsh father but i don’t think he’s a bad one , in Africa there are a lot of fathers like that we still love them , when people come from difficult upbringing they behave that way ,you can’t rationalise it, but then discover that they just care too much and have hypertension or other medical conditions , modern western world is right about highlighting the abuses that may happen but drawing some distinctions are important as well.

In no circumstance was going to the media the solution. If a crime took place, Gjert would be under arrest, but he's not. Regardless of what happened, I don't like when families take things public. Anything that happens in the family should stay in the family unless a crime is involved. We don't know if a crime was committed, but we do know that Henrik disputes the story of the other brothers and that Gjert is not in jail. If they aren't prepared to share ALL of the details, then they shouldn't go to the media, period. What are they alleging exactly? Did Gjert beat someone so badly that they ended up in the hospital? Did he yell at them and spank them? Did he beat them with an object? Did he do anything at all, or is Henrik the one telling the truth? Nobody knows but the brothers and it makes all the difference. We can't draw reasonable conclusions when the sources withhold the very information needed to evaluate the circumstances.
