Love hearing from Gjert and think he and his boys have done the running world a great service in popularizing Bakken's experimental training. I remember reading Bakken's blog in the early 2000s as a young athlete, but had trouble translating it to something actionable without having a lactate meter myself. Now the relationships with heart rate and race paces are better established as reasonable proxy inputs, plus the credibility with what the three brothers have achieved lends much further credence to the approach. Really enjoyed watching the series with English subtitles more than once. Sorry about what the family is going through. At least here, Gjert seems like he has really mellowed out, which is probably good for all involved. Wish them all the best.

He's a tough s.o.b but he has to be. Goals don't achieve themselves, you have to work for it and he knows it better than most.
The fact that he praises his sons in spite of the situation says something about what a great man he truly is.

Not many people have their entire lives filmed. Everything I’ve seen makes it seem like he is a decent guy. His wife also seems very level headed, loving and strong and I doubt she would allow him to ever treat the kids bad. Hard to know who to believe.

@@dpw181 You’re probably right. Hard to know. I agree why would they say something that isn’t true but kids always think their parents are abusive even if the parents just ask them to do the dishes let alone driving them to do something special with their talents. Surely Jacob and his brothers would all stop running if they hated it so much. They are probably really comfortable doing their own training now and look back at how their Dad drove them and think he was a horrible person and it was unnecessary. I don’t think they are dumb and can’t do anything else. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

My sister is married to one of the brothers ( Martin ) and he describes his father as tough but fair. He was never prioritized during his childhood because he choose a different path, his parents barely had any time for him. Ironically he's the only one of them who still keeps in touch with his father today... And from what I understand, they were NEVER mistreated during their childhood. At least not physically. Norwegian medias is making the situation look far worse than it really is.

Personally I think he's on the high-functioning Asperger spectrum. Gets extremely focused and obsessed on the smallest details, and some level of lack of empathy or understanding of other's feelings. It's not like he's intentionally bad, but in effect these characteristics combined with being in the mids of his kids life every day and about every step they take, it's not hard to see that at least becomes psychologically abusive. That he has a strong temper over the smallest things is quite obvious. It's not easy for people on the outside to recognize such condition. Even family members can easily miss it if they have not researched and are aware of the subtle signs. Not sure if to say the Narcissisms is due to or in addition to the above, but the effect is perhaps not too different.

A guy that put his children through verbal AND physical abuse is a legend? The oldest brother Kristoffer has told that he pinned Henriks head to the ground with his foot when he was 3 years for god sake. He also told that he pushed Kristoffer in to a trafficed road when he was 14, because Kristoffer told him he didn't want to be world champion. And that he got choked by Gjert so he coulnd't breathe, lifted him up and slammed him into the wall and a table as well. Everything you hear about this guy just gets worse and worse. It seems very likely that he is an abusive father and horrible person.

Too bad every American middle distance coach since the 1970s didn't understand this. It's been sickening to watch one runner after another throw away their career attempting to emulate Dave Wottle. Everybody rips the Centrowitz winning time from 2016. But imagine the morons who volunteered to sit in the back of the pack at that pace

he's always looked like an angry man to me. It's unfortunate what has occurred with the brothers, I've been in the same shoes so I can somewhat relate. There's no denying he is the main reason they have accomplished as much as they have (also their doctor has to be credited)
