    GRRM himself has said the Tyrells are technically richer than the Lannisters.
    In times of poverty and famine, you can't eat gold. People will turn to the House with the most food, not the most money. In short, food is lot more useful.
    Great vid as per usual. Always love hearing some ASOIAF lore

    The Reach may be very concerned with its agricultural wealth, but it is also the birthplace of chivalry, knightly culture, and it has the most knights in all of Westeros. They are also the second wealthiest kingdom, and if need be, could build a massive army, full of conscripts, volunteers, and the a large amount of knights, who spend their lives mastering the art of war in tournaments.

      I mean as far as we’ve seen the Reach has historically underperformed militarily, yes they have the biggest army, but it tends to be less hardened than kingdoms like the North, Iron Islands, and Stormlands. And it they lack the geographic impregnability of the Dornish Deserts and Vale’s mountains. Also they don’t have best equipment money can buy like the Westerlands.

    Everything I've ever read suggests that the Manderlys are actually quite a bit wealthier than the Starks, and are in fact one of the wealthiest houses across the Seven Kingdoms. They don't just have the silver mines, but also a large port and one of the largest cities in Westeros, from which they can pull tolls/taxes from.

    • @nicklomas181
      @nicklomas181 8 років тому +31

      Its the biggest "city" in the north, but someone says it has nothing on kings landing or oldtown. I think it's basically an average sized town.

    • @oliverhancock5397
      @oliverhancock5397 8 років тому +17

      +Nicholas Lomas I wouldn't go that far... I would not say it is average certainly not the size of kingslanding but not average... That is like comparing medieval London to Paris... Paris was far bigger but London was not small... As for the mandrellys being richer than the Starks... A would wager if so only marginally... As they pay Taxs to house stark as do all houses in the realm... While they rely on silver and the port... Both of which would be taxed it would be difficult to say...

    • @Ryeguy123a
      @Ryeguy123a 8 років тому +34

      As I understand it, it's the 5th largest city in Westeros, and no other places beyond those 5 are large enough to be cities.
      So, yeah, it's nothing compared to Oldtown or King's Landing, but it's a very real city and fairly prosperous, with a good deal of trade in things like silver and lumber.

    • @Ryeguy123a
      @Ryeguy123a 8 років тому +22

      It's not uncommon in history for there to be noble houses wealthier than their leige lords.
      And while the Manderlys are paying taxes, it's not like they're getting nothing for those taxes. The Starks aren't just taking all that $$$ and shipping it off to the Iron Bank in Braavos. Most of that money is probably going to the defense and upkeep of the realm, or saved toward those expenses during times of war/long winters. Soldiers, armor, castles and food stores for winters that last years or decades are expensive, after all.

    So I've been trying to figure out the order of wealthiest to least wealthy... care to help? So far it seems like 1. Westerlands 2. Reach 3. Dorne 4. The Vale 5. The Riverlands 6. The North 7. The Stormlands 8. Iron Islands...
    4-6 are the tough ones for me to figure out... the Vale has a fertile valley but it's small while the North is huge and has so many resources in total but is sparsely populated and has that weather issue...

      The only thing that might be incorrect is the Vale/Riverlands, not sure which is more wealthy. The Riverlands have a lot of trade hubs, but the wars have affected them greatly. Whereas the Vale has not been hit by the war, and they do grow a lot of produce.

    I'm quite surprised to see the Riverlands with it's constant warfare (not necessarily their war) don't develop strong martial tradition. They should have strong martial tradition to protect their land.
    Also I don't think the north is that poor and infertile. Russia and Canada are close enough in condition to the north, both of them lies very close to arctic circle, but they also have large area of fertile farmland. I think at least southern half (except the marshland near the crannogman) of the north is good enough for farming. Even in summer the land of house umber is quite fertile for agriculture. There's no way they built a castle up there millennia ago without the means of supporting themself and their population. Heck even The Gift is fertile enough for agriculture, that's why Brandon Stark gave that piece of land to the nightswatch, so they can support themselves.

    If the North was connected by roads, it would've been much more populated and prospered since northerner furs are valued throughout the world and there are silvers in the northern mountain clans' mines. The lumber trade would be even more efficient and money would pour into the north.

    1. The Westerlands
    2. The Reach
    3. Dorne
    4. The Vale
    5. The Riverlands
    6. The Crownlands
    7. The North

    • @TheFiresloth
      @TheFiresloth 8 років тому +3

      I would say Vale before Dorne, as the Vale actually got a big city and is very fertile. Of course, Dorne has luxury, but it doesn't really compensate.
      The Riverland are maybe a bit wealthier, as they have quite a lot of harbour and small town, good for market. In time of peace, that is...
      The rest seems pretty accurate to me :)

    • @MrCookie0510
      @MrCookie0510 7 років тому +2

      I would put the iron islands next to or under the Riverlands. They seem to have good amount of trade with iron/tin/lead (has we see a lot of Merchant ships in lordsport and most likely the same story in other places has well) and it's seems to be a good iron has they " produce excellent swords, axes, ringmail, and plate" (that was from "The World of Ice & Fire" book).
      I would put the vale more down due to the mounting clans, while they may have good farm land they still have to deal with mounting clans men.

      5 The stormlands bc of the Trade with the dornish and the crownlands
      6. THE NORF
      7. The Iron Islands

    I think the Barrowlands and areas around rivers ( like -wheeping water , last river , white knife , long lake etc ) is fertile for growing crop and the rest would still be suitable for pasture . The north is an inspiration from Scotland , Iceland and Scandinavian countrise , where raising livestock especially sheep is more commonly and widely done than raising crops .
