  • Laurel and Hardy was a funny duo that I loved when I was young. I had to see if my son would have the same reaction I did when I first saw piano movers. Laurel and Hardy still makes me laugh today.

...L & H at their peak. "The Music Box" is a comedy masterpiece.

I had the Laurel and Hardy comics in the late sixties and early seventies, and rubber Laurel and Hardy faces. One could change their expressions.
I grew up with them regularly on TV.
The appreciation society, The Sons of the Desert, is still going strong.

The steps in this film were built up a hill with a loop uphill in the road away to the right hand side.
The first time Laurel and Hardy used them (in a now-lost film known only from still photos that have survived), there was only the single house at the bottom on the right.
The second time they were used (a re-make of them trying to deliver a washing machine), there were a number of houses all up the side on the right as in this film.
Today, the steps are there, most of the same houses, but the left side has houses all up it as well.
Would be tough to use it as a filming location today, it's like a tiny narrow alley.

The best part is when they get it up the house and a person told them they didnt have to use the steps. He told them that there is a road that they could have use to drive up to the house. They than took the piano back down the steps and use their delivery truck to drive up to the house. There is a plaque at that location in Silverlake.

Oh, guys, "the music box" is a legendary film, but why would you ever watch the *colourised* version of it? The only proper way to watch Laurel & Hardy is in the original black & white!

This was filmed in the days before color movies and long before TV was common. I was introduced to it when I was a kid in the early 70s, when my dad would borrow 8mm short films from a local library and he'd show them on our home movie projector.

They never had a TV show. Their movies were made way before television. And color was only added digitally recently.

I believe this long set of steps still exists in Los Angeles. This gag is so well thought through. It is really genius when you stand back and watch. How many laughs can you get out of one idea? Unfortunately, you only played a short clip and the whole 30 minutes or more is classic.

When they finally get the piano to the top of the steps the mailman that directed them there pointed out that all they didn't have to carry the piano up the steps. All they had to do was drive their buggy up to house. So, in typical Laurel and Hardy fashion, they take the piano back down the steps, load it onto their buggy and drive it back up.
One of the rules for Laurel and Hardy movies was, "Between two minds not a single thought."
Another rule was this. Ollie thought Stan was the dumbest guy in the world. He was wrong. Stan was the 2nd dumbest guy in the world. The dumbest guy in the world was Ollie.
Stan Laurel was a creative force behind the movies they made at Hal Roach Studios. He was one of the best gagmen in Hollywood.
Oliver Hardy's nickname was Babe. He was strictly a 8-5 type of guy. While Stan would stay working on story, gags, editing and other behind the scenes processes, Babe would go to the club for dinner, drinks, golf and the track for horse racing.
One of Babe's best buds was a famous cowboy actor. At one point, Stan was suffering from complications of diabetes and could not work. The cowboy actor asked Ollie if he wanted to be in his next picture. Ollie told him he couldn't because since he teamed up with Stan he only made one picture without him and promised he would never do that again. The cowboy actor said, "Well, Babe, why don't you ask him?" So Ollie went to Stan and told him of the offer. Stan's response was unexpected by Ollie, "Ollie, it's The Duke. You have to do it." Because of that The Fighting Kentuckian was made with Ollie as John Wayne's sidekick in the movie. One scene has Babe and The Duke playing violin together except Wayne's character does not know how to play. It's is fun to watch The Duke play Stan to Ollie.

Even in the 1930s, the police were a bunch of aggressive a-holes! It's not just now!
Laurel and Hardy are the greatest ever. Classic short.
