As a former Protestant, I can sympathize. To make a long story short, i was raised methodist, left the church, studied taoism, then one day i became convinced of gods existence. The main reason i left was because i couldnt reconcile the church’s teachings with the bible and so i assumed it was just a cherry picker theology. I thought a true christian should follow the whole bible and every denomination comes from private interpretations. Therefore everyone’s interpretations are wrong somewhere and likely right somewhere and its up to us to be a theological jackal to get to the truth. Its ok if we fail as long as we honestly try to harmonize scripture, were good.
When i started to believe in god again i asked a baptist friend of mine how she picks and chooses what to believe in scripture. She said well i believe all of it! I started attending her church and quickly realized they had the same issues as the methodist church. I even started studying with the Jehovah’s witnesses. Then I saw James White vs Greg Stafford and became interested in Calvinism. I decided to just attend the methodist church i was baptized in while i studied.
10 years go by and i realized no churches really have the full truth. At least not according to my interpretation….. then it hit me. Who am I supposed to be? I’m supposed to submit to the church not judge which one is right….. the church is supposed to tell me when im wrong not the other way around. I hit my knees in prayer and that night i had a crazy dream about the catholic church.
I woke up and thought no way. Absolutely not! I could quote James White on what i believed about the Catholic church. Still i felt humbled and decided to see what Catholics have to say for themselves. I just wanted to see what the catholic perspective was on the reformation. I was shocked, i had only been told the protestant side of that history. Anyway 1 year of study later and i was confirmed Catholic.
Looking back, I realize that sola scripture is really just a box that you are trapped inside of. it keeps you from looking at history, It keeps you from looking at tradition, It keeps you from considering what oral tradition is, it diffuses authority, and hides its true master: the individual! Simply put, if it’s up to you to decide what the Bible means to say then you’re the authority. the only way to not be the authority is to abandon Sola scrip after all…. Scripture tells you the church is infallible. Protestants can interpret scripture anyway they want except when it comes to the church. If you truly applied sola scriptura, you’d abandon it as soon as you hit passages about the church being the pillar of the truth, the gates shall not prevail, and if he will not listen to the church, submit to your elders….. on and on. They have to reinterpret all these passages from their plain meaning or supplement the teaching with other verses against tradition as license to ignore the passages they dont like.

I too left the Protestant church for this exact reason you become your own pope and interpretor. The Commonitory - St. Vincent of Lérins (d. c.450) said it best But here someone perhaps will ask, “Since the canon of Scripture is complete, and sufficient of itself for everything, and more than sufficient, what need is there to join with it the authority of the Church’s interpretation?” For this reason - because, owing to the depth of Holy Scripture, all do not accept it in one and the same sense, but one understands its words in one way, another in another; so that it seems to be capable of as many interpretations as there are interpreters. For Novatian expounds it one way, Sabellius another, Donatus another, Arius, Eunomius, Macedonius, another, Photinus, Apollinaris, Priscillian, another, Iovinian, Pelagius, Celestius, another, lastly, Nestorius another. Therefore, it is very necessary, on account of so great intricacies of such various error, that the rule for the right understanding of the prophets and apostles should be framed in accordance with the standard of Ecclesiastical and Catholic interpretation.. Alton you need humbling your pride was on full display.

As a Protestant working through the doctrines of the RC church one thing I see over and over is the sheer ignorance of the church Fathers by Protestants.
When I hear Alton I hear a guy woefully unaware of textual criticism. 150AD isn’t late. What the heck. If you say Proto Evangelium to a Protestant very few will have any idea of what you’re talking about. No idea why Alton is even in a debate.
I started studying Catholic doctrine because I had such an incomplete picture of it. You cannot argue for or against a doctrine you have almost no understanding of. So I’m studying it myself until I know it like someone who was raised catholic and actually studied the fathers etc.
Another reason I started looking around is my hatred of the stupid Pentecostal doctrine of OSAS and the fact that churches do next to nothing in scripture. In most non denom churches and in many Pentecostal churches communion is given sparingly. There’s no real schedule. There’s no real purpose for the Advent. There’s no confession and absolution. If you wanna freak out a Protestant tell them the father can remit and retain sins!! That’s like showing Dracula the cross. Hopefully by January or February I will be learned enough and ready to join the RC church. That’s the plan anyways.

I totally feel you. I had a lot of "Protestant-infused" beliefs when I started seriously studying Christianity. I came from no specific Church, and was "spiritual but not religious" (if anything at all). What brought me to the Catholic Church though was the same general idea that you mentioned, so I wanted to tell you about it. I became quickly aware I would be Christian (I was studying a few different religions at the time), but what led me to the Catholic Church specifically was a moment when I recognized all these "Protestant-infused" rebuttals that kept coming up as I looked into certain topics, and at some point I thought to myself "Well if I'm being sincere, I don't really know the Catholic teachings, but I keep jumping to these counter-arguments against it... maybe I should actually study what it is they teach first. If I'm still opposed then, then fine. I'd have given it a fair shake and can move on at that point." Fast forward a year or two and I found my home in the Catholic Church. Can't say I expected it, lol. As a matter of fact, if you would have told me this was going to happen 5 years ago, I probably would have laughed. Anyhow, God bless you bro. May the Holy Spirit continue to teach and convict you (and me).

I was a rogue pope of my own oppressed by satan blinded by my pride arrogance and retaliation mindset. I was very lost. In the trenches gang affiliated did 10 yrs behind bars. The Lord Jesus Christ saved me and guided me to RCC. I was scared to confess and repent and scared to walk into any church. I was anti Catholic anti Jew sadly, and it's hard for me to admit. I started studying 1yr ago and have dedicated 3-5 hrs per day studying and praying throughout the day asking for God to guide me to his Church. I contacted the Catholic Church down the street and started OCIA(RCIA) best thing I have ever done is consent to the Lord and his Church. I'm unfortunately covered head to toe in tats from my past. I quit getting tats yrs ago, but didn't think the Church would even let me inside. Everyone has been so kind and helpful. I've learned so much and have grown so much. Glory to God. Theotokos has been an inspiration for me to have obedience, aswell as all the saints.

Sadly, if you are actually studying the doctrines of the Catholic Church you will no doubt know them better than most people who are raised Catholic. I know because I was one of the "X years of Catholic school" guys until I got challenged on some of the doctrines while attending a non-denominational church. I wanted to know who was right, because most of my family is still Catholic. Turns out when I look at the actual beliefs and teachings of the Church they are rock-solid and undeniable. My reversion to Catholicism has been rough for many reasons, but the truth of the Church is undeniable imo

@ it certainly seems that way. I was brought up southern Baptist and then went full non denom and Pentecostal. Church fathers are never talked about. Sola scriptura is never actually taught it’s just stated that’s what is believed. The pride and arrogance it takes to walk up to another grown man to correct his error without even the slightest familiarity with the evidence for why he believes what he believes is the height of arrogance, the height of judgement, Pride etc. He would take offense to this characterization and deny this but his actions spoke louder than these words; He assumed William to be a blind idiot, a zealot with no sound evidence for his faith. You don’t walk in that unprepared unless you’re assuming the absolute worst in your opponents intellect, integrity and regard for the truth.
I hope this man realizes how his hatred for the Catholic Faith made him blind, and if he’s honest, that in and of itself should shatter his worldview and shine a light on his hatred for the martyrs who held to these doctrines that he’d sooner be in league with antichrists like Arius than share in the faith of the holy Martyrs.
This was a beautiful testament to the truth and an exposing of the god complex and self aggrandizing protestantism leads to. God bless you brother William. I will pray for this man and for the Holy Spirit to enable him to see.

I'm Indian and if you call my father's sister's son a cousin you will be punched in the face, he is my brother. Leviticus 12 deals with purification rituals after childbirth, not an atonement for moral sin.
The text refers to the ceremonial purification of a woman who gave birth, and the ritual is more related to ritual impurity than to atonement for moral sin.
    Context of Leviticus 12
Leviticus 12 describes the steps a woman should follow after giving birth, depending on the sex of the child. The purification due to childbirth was a ceremonial matter, not an atonement for moral sin, which was addressed differently in Scripture.
    What is in Leviticus 12?
    The chapter says that:
If the woman gave birth to a son (verse 2), she was considered unclean for seven days, and on the eighth day, the child should be circumcised (as a sign of belonging to God's covenant with Israel).
After these seven days, she should wait another 33 days for her purification, during which she could not touch anything sacred nor enter the sanctuary.
If the child was a daughter (verse 5), the woman was considered unclean for two weeks and should wait another 66 days for her purification.
After this period, she should offer a sacrifice, consisting of a lamb for a burnt offering and a pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering.
The Purification in Leviticus 12 is Not Related to Moral Sin
The purification mentioned in Leviticus 12 is not directly related to moral sin, such as transgressions against the Ten Commandments or moral failings.
The impurity mentioned in the text was considered a ritual impurity associated with blood and childbirth, which made the woman in a state of "impurity" not suitable to participate in temple worship or touch sacred things during this period.
The purification sacrifice was not an atonement for the woman's personal sins but a ceremonial purification rite.
This purification ritual was necessary to restore the woman to full participation in the religious life of Israel after childbirth, which is a common practice in many ancient cultures, where childbirth was seen as an event that could temporarily render a person "impure" according to ritual standards.
    Atonement for Moral Sin
If we are talking about atonement for moral sin, this was dealt with in other types of sacrifices, such as the sin offerings (offerings for transgressions against God's commandments) that were made when someone committed a personal sin, such as dishonoring the Sabbath or committing sins like lying, stealing, or murder.
According to Altin interpretation, every woman that gives birth is disobeying God's law!

So if I am giving an account about my cousins in my local dialect, I would use brothers and sisters throughout that those in the west might actually think we are biological siblings when indeed we aren't. The problem with the argument Alton uses about Mary and the offering of sin can be used against him if an atheist or Muslim was debating him. They would say that John the Baptist’s ministry was a baptism for the remission of sins, if Jesus is God and sinless why is he baptised by John? If you’re going to be consistent in any argument you can’t use it in one place (the purification in the temple) and not apply the same argument in another (baptism of Jesus). The other problem is that they had to undergo the purification ritual because what people also forget is that directly tied to it is the ritual of circumcision for the new born male, the sign of the covenant with God. If the Holy Family had not been purified, that would be a scandal in itself but Jesus also not being circumcised would have been another. If you check the Jewish Encyclopedia about circumcision the penalty of non-observance being "karet," excision from the people, the JE also says “it was "a reproach" for the Israelite to be uncircumcised”.

Alton kept saying, ‘You’re shocked because we’re reading the Bible.’ This is so frustrating when Protestants are so arrogant to assume they are the only ones who read the Bible. He was so busted the entire time and William demonstrated greater command of scripture, history, Greek, English, Latin, church history.
Alton just keeps repeating the same arguments almost as if he has a gotcha. I hate to say this but I think Alton is just unintelligent.

I have been taught, by Fr. Mitch Pacwa and others that women of childbearing age were ritually impure each month. Thus, they had to make a "sin offering" under the Mosaic Law, in order to be ritually pure. Childbirth lead to "an issue of blood" so naturally all new mothers were bound under the law to offer a sacrifice for their purification. It has nothing to do with moral sin, but only ritual impurity. To twist obedience to the Law of Moses into sin is essentially blasphemous.

Look at it in the original greek and adelphos is all over the place, exactly as we use "brother" nowadays. As long as man has been on earth, "brother from another mother" has been a concept
And considering jewish culture _does_ acknowledge cousins and even nephews as "brothers," it is straight up bizarre to think we somehow understand adelphos better than even the Greek Orthodox that teach the exact same thing regarding how to understand Jesus's "brothers."

Unbelievable. The customs followed under the Jewish law had to be followed. Firstly, so that the law would be fulfilled, of which Jesus spoke of. Secondly, so that the hiddenness of Christ from satan would allow him to enter into His “hour”. Did not Christ receive baptism from John, right before he entered into the wilderness? So did Jesus need to repent and be baptized to be saved as well? This is the logic followed from Leviticus 12.

I'm a black/native southerner (USA), I have cousins that aren't related to me, and actual cousins that I call my brothers and sisters. I come from a large family and we all grew up together. The culture of calling cousins siblings exists in the US. This brother is tripping! 🤷‍♂
Private interpretation in Protestant churches is what led me to the Catholic Church. The Church is the pillar and bulwark of the truth! [1 Timothy 3:15]. My question was what church, and now I'm becoming Catholic at Easter Vigil.

I'm from Ghana. Even most female strangers at our mom's age we normally call them moms, the same for fathers too. And if they look a bit older than our parents we call them aunties or uncles. If these strangers are old enough to birth either or both our parents we normally call them grannies. So if I am giving an account about my cousins in my local dialect, I would use brothers and sisters throughout, that those in the west might actually think we are biological siblings when indeed we aren't. I will still call my biological brothers and sisters too the same way as I describe my cousins with the exact spellings. We even call children our nieces and nephews when they may not be our relatives.
My biological siblings are called "me nua" in my language
My cousins are called "me nua"
My biological mother is referred to as "me maame"
Each of my mother's sisters is called "me maame"
My mother's brother is my uncle not my father's brothers
My biological father is called " me papa"
Each of my father's brothers is called "me papa"
My father's sisters are my aunties and not my mother's sisters.
Our culture and that of the Jews are very similar in this sense.
So the fact that James and the rest were called brothers and sisters to Christ doesn't mean they are biological siblings. In fact it will shock you that they were not even actual family in the first place regardless them living in the same household which is common in most African households where strangers we have lived with for years automatically become family that marrying their children to some extent might be considered a taboo. In Ghana we can even describe our family friends, bosses at work, and even strangers as mothers, fathers, aunties, uncles, brothers, or sisters. And the spellings of these are the same as what we refer to our biological siblings and parents and other relatives.

My God! If his logic is Mary Joseph offered the two doves and pigeons becuase they were sinful or impure. Then by his same logic, Christ was outside the covenent until his circumcusion on the 8th day, literally the first party to the old covenent exited it for 8 days.
Also by the same logic, if baptism washes away sins, Then Jesus was sinful until he was baptized.

I think Alton doesn’t get why we believe in doctrines. We don’t get our doctrines from written sources. We get it from the Apostles, passed down “by word of mouth”. Apocryphal works such as the Protoevangelium of James may affirm certain doctrines, but it isn’t the sole source of the teaching of the Perpetual Virginity.

And that is why we end up with thousands of “churches”. Yet Jesus is clear that we have to listen to the Apostle and their successors (Lk. 10:16) because to them is the promise of the Holy Spirit to guide (Jn.16:13-15) His VISIBLE Church. Not to anyone who reads the Bible. Because then we have “schizophrenic” Holy Spirit!
