At first I thought him a Roger waters "This is my band" kind of a man but I never really knew what a showman and entertainer he is. Kilroy was here is so disliked and I guess rightly so. But it's so clear he needed a good lyricist and writer at his disposal, someone like Kerry Livgren. Paradise theater was shat on by reviewers as well for the same reasons. The albums lack in any real depth or meaning so they say but my god is there talent there in that man it's just a little misplaced. I personally love both of those albums. Maybe Styx shouldn't of been judged and reviewed by prog rock standards???
I love styx...i love dennis..i can listen to dennis solo stuff all day long....but i dont listen to styx with out dennis.. i miss hearing jy's background vocals
@@psions555 But Paradise Theater and Kilroy were both great albums and Mr. Roboto a great song. If the other band members of Styx didnt like it that was their mistake.
I saw him in concert a few years ago. Im 46 yrs.old. and have saw a variety of concerts heavy metal, pop, country, opra, symphony's,etc. And i have to say i was astonished , leaving his concert. Over all, out of all the concerts ive seen/heard. His was the best. No, joke. Fabulous !!!!! ❤❤❤
Many years ago I had the opportunity to briefly meet Dennis. I have to say he was one of the nicest warm hearted people I have ever met. He was a total class act.
I also met him, Friday of Labor Day weekend, 1975 !!! Talked to him and the drummer personally just after a short practice session !!! Saw him in Nashville, maybe 1999 or the next year. He played a Special Session for the people that had joined the Quixtar online sales company that was started by Amway, wow, almost couldn't remember, L O L !!!
I came here for this awesome rendition of this classic song in the midst of the spring of 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. This song has never been more true. "The headlines read that these are the worst of times. I do believe it's true. When people lock their doors and hide inside. Rumor has it, it's the end of Paradise...but I know, with the world turned upside down, Baby, I know...You'll always be around. The best of times, are when I'm alone with you...". As I sit here locked down with my wife, this is so true and it gives me hope. Thanks, Dennis. Your voice is timeless. So is your message.
"the headlines read these are the worst of times, i do believe it's true...when people lock their doors and hide inside". "i wish the summer wind could bring back paradise". can't describe the virus pandemic any better than that!
My wife and I saw this show in a small venue, Mission Viejo Lake. So awesome we had to go again! Grove of Anaheim. Absolutely a polished and professional rock and roll show.
It's amazing that he can still sing like this at age 67. There are parts where he doesn't quite have the same vocal strength or clarity that he used to have, but his voice sounds remarkably close to the way it sounded during his peak years and he's still hitting some really high notes.
I'm 46 yrs. Old and have attend a varity of concetts heavy metal, pop, country, opera, symphony's,etc. And i have to say his was the best concert I've ever attended. Everything was perfect! Voice, band, etc. What a legend! Im happy to have said " i seen him in concert/live". ❤❤❤
I only saw him in a special private setting in Nashville for a Quixtar Convention( Amway), the second time I had seen him. The first time was in St. Louis, Friday of Labor Day weekend, "1975" with a friend that I was Germany in the army.....
We just saw this show tonight in Houston, Texas. HOLY TOLEDO!!! IT WAS AWESOME. Absolutely AWESOME! So polished and so professional. Dennis is a time traveler. THANK YOU DDY.
DANG, HE SOUNDED FABULOUS THEN TOO. Having just listened to the 1996 live "Paradise" version of this 1981 hit, it sounds to me in the same key, and the arrangement on every instrument is as close as it can get. SUPERB and EXCELLENT group put together here - the vocals sound like the young dudes in original form. This one is even a tad bit more zingy. I wish they could all perform for another 50 years. This song will never die.
And at one of his concerts a couple of years ago, I timed how long he held "THE NOTE" in Suite Madame Blue...25 seconds! Amazing breath control to do that and hold the note out without wavering. A lot of younger performers couldn't manage that and Dennis was in his mid 60s at the time
This man inspired me to be study music and like him, I'm a keyboardist. I wish he'd sit more at a grand piano and play some of these tunes like he used to back in the day.
I had seats in the fourth for me and my family to see Dennis a few months ago. The show was cancelled because of the Pandemic. So disappointing. His voice is STILL amazing! Hope I get another chance to see him.
Dennis hit a home run in 2010 when he shook the band up and added August and Craig. That really brought the classic sound back. He has got it right now!
@@danakennedy8027 Please tell him I'm so grateful for all his music and love and dedication. I've loved him for 45 years and am so lucky I finally got to see him a couple years ago! It was a lifelong dream come true!

1981 - i was born and loved this song ever since first heard it when i was a kid. wow, dennis looks old now but still got the voice. This is my fav Styx song of all time.
this man took the time to send us a nice couple of songs while we were locked down,.,thank you dennis.. still sounding as awesome as this.. love you man.
Just bought tickets for his show in November in RI. Cannot wait. Saw his solo tour several years ago in MA and he hasn't skipped a beat. His voice is still beautiful. Wish STYX would get over themselves and tour ALL together.
Dennis DeYoung is one of those lucky singers who have managed to keep a good portion of their voices. Robin Zander is another one. I guess it's a combination of good genes and taking care of your voice. He sounds great.
My GOD...that voice.. Dennis DeYoung's voice NEVER degraded as he got older... as so many other rock stars have. If not the best voice, it's tied for 1st place. He's a true professional.
Just watched the Dennis D concert in LA from 3 years back. Looks like the rest of the band has been replaced. Dennis D. Is Styx. What a show. I have seen Styx without Dennis. Now I have seen Dennis who is Styx. Please come to Ann Arbor when all this craziness is over. Styx is back!!!
Dennis DeYoung IS SO GOOD. Even watching this 2014 performance now in 2024, I never tire of this song. I still get all the feels I did like I did when first listening to it as a young kid in 1981. ❤
That chorus is one of the most positive uplifting moments in any music....the Beatles, Queen would have been happy to have a song of this level.....You did it Dennis...congrats
dennis you are AMAZING!! ty for the BEST OF TIMES!! you are still the VOICE of styx dennis !! god bless you i am sooooo happy you are showing this generation how its done!!!!!
Hard to believe the Paradise Theater is 41 years old and DDY will be 75 in 2 weeks ----seems just like yesterday I bought the album at Waxie Maxies----lol....still have it, and Cornerstone, Grand Illusion, Crystal Ball, Pieces of Eight too.
I saw Styx my favorite band in the earl 90’s on the first stop in Maryland for The Return to Paradise Tour. What a memory I will have for the rest of my life.
Yeah, I don't know about that... They sure do cover Crystal Ball, Man In The Wilderness, Fooling Yourself, Sing For The Day pretty darn well. Oh yeah, Tommy songs. Don't be a hater
Pure showmanship. Entertainer. He doesn't need Styx. Styx needs him.
Sort of like how Journey made a mistake when they moved on without Steve Perry! Take care and have a great day! 🌝

JAMA His singing technique is perfect thats why :)

Dennis DeYoung IS Styx. JY and Shaw are just living off Dennis's brilliance.
Why hasn't this been released as a (live) single on the radio since 2014?! It would KILL!
Apart from Dennis' vocals, the sound of that hi-hat is so crisp, just beautiful.
this song make me back to my 12 years old, when l'm playing and listening to this song in my yard.
