Spent a week here as a CCF cadet, way back in 1975. They stuck us in those Nissen huts that you walked past... I think that building that Angel wanted to explore was the indoor 25 yard indoor .22 rifle range, but I may be wrong, it was a long time ago.
Spent a lot of time there in the 80's when it was a training camp. It was a cracking little place then, mostly accommodation as you saw. The reason why the billets were pretty basic is that it was just a training camp so no-one spent much time there. Tragic to see the state it is in now, with so many living without homes it's offensive to leave these places having no use. The house on the hill is nothing to do with the camp, it sits outside the perimeter fence. I remember at the end of one session there we had to hand it back and I had to check several of the Nissan huts. Knackered I was walking back to the mess when my Sergeant Major drove up in his car. He growled at me and said, "Hut 39, the waste bin is missing." I said, "You're talking to the wrong man Sergeant Major. He asked me what I meant and I walked away saying, "You need to talk to someone who actually gives a f@@k." I left him laughing his head off as he drove off. Great times.
The Camp was sold in 2010 to Cotswold-based developer Comparo Limited at auction for £750,000. They have sat on it ever since and obtained planning permission for a 130 home housing estate on the site and put it back on the market in 2018 for millions!
Used to come here every couple months with cadets, until it was closed down because of the asbestos. The building at 19:00 minutes was the 25meter indoor range. We used no.8 rifles with live 22. Rounds, also, lever action 177 pellets (air rifles). I miss this place. So many memories.
Wow!!! I joined the Army when I was 16, in 1991. We were taken here on our Platoon Commanders weekend (which was basically a 3 day jolly). We did rock climbing, caving, navigation, horse riding and swimming. I spent a couple of nights on guard duty in the guard house (which is the building on the right as you go in). I remember being awake all night in and having to let in a Mothers Pride van with our bread delivery at 5 o'clock in the morning. I've always wondered where this place was, I remember it was near Newquay but had no idea exactly where until I saw your video this morning. We were taken there in the back of a 4 tonne Bedford van all the way from Folkestone in Kent which took bloody hours!! Great video, thanks for bringing back the memories and finally solving the mystery of where we actually spent the weekend all those years ago.
I went this place recently. I was completely shocked to find the working station at the top. Was on holiday at the site close and couldn't help my self. Awesome place.
Shame about the vandalism and sad to see it like this, 47 Years ago (1973 ) I was a Army cadet on Annual camp here, Old world war 2 style uniforms blanco, boot polish and hobnail boots. We stayed in those Nissan huts up the top end of the camp near the cliff, Made some amazing friends some of which are still around today, Got to fly in a old bell M.A.S.H style helicopter and fire SLR and GPMG's Fantastic memory's, Never thought id say it but "those were the days" Good to see place again Thanks Matt
This camp was built during WW2 the Nissen huts were built by US Army field engineers. I spent quite a bit of time there as a young Army Cadet and I vividly remember the camp in full occupation by the Army in the mid 90s it was very buisy with its role in recuperation of troops after returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of the buildings were WW2 era with a few post war additions. Part of the camp was bombed by the Germans during a raid as they mistook it for RAF St Eval, sadly 25 soldiers were killed as a result. It's of no surprise it has been disused by the Army as it would probably be too expensive to renovate the site . Nice video and Im sure you walked through the Mess hall where I once sat with my Cadet platoon to eat our breakfast.
1:00:01 that’s the RN Wireless station. It’s not a bunker it’s a Navy site that is manned and if they catch you onsite ie crossing that gate then you are trespassing.
Matt: Oh the Butcher's let's have a look, ok let's go. Angel: Wat? It's treat-ey room, you want to go, why? This was a very relaxing explore; cannot get over the fact it was let go for a song. Would make a lovely little self-contained village with all those low rolling hills and view of the sea.
Hi matt nice video as always,I think Ian & Chris ( IKS ) would of loved to of come on this explore with you,Maybe you could arrange this?,Atleast you will not go hungry with ian,s cookery skills lately lol.
It was sold off for 750,000 in around 2010 to a development company with plans to convert the farmhouse and build other housing but I think was refused
I cut the grass here ... so here's some info. The base was sold many years ago and up until recently they were unable to obtain planning permission. They have since secured permission to build homes. Every building is condemned due to the presence of asbestos, hence why these building arent habitable. A quick note to any body who is willing to trespass on the site as well .... during your visit, please dont smash any windows -_- I have to strim up against the building and it's not nice having smashed glass thrown back at you.
It was really active a couple of years ago Matt they had Merlin helicopters doing circuits for days and guys fast roping into the area, not sure if this was the Marines or Special forces but they seemed to be training for fast building entry and you'd hear the odd crack and bang through the day.
Was bought in 2010 you tit awaiting planning permission to build new homes on. Exactly what are 'the people' going to do with it? You couldn't even afford the council tax on one of those derelict huts. Tit.
You been down in my stomping area of the UK then Matt, thought this had all gone by now, I had a 17th edition electrical training week down there about 3 or 4 years ago further up on the left in one of the industrial type buildings and had a drive around the site looking at all the various buildings :)
Such a massive place left to waste away and soon to be a blight on that picturesque stretch of coast. Thanks for another explore Matthew. Some humorous interludes too, especially liked the Pythonesque 'Big Army' 😂 👍
Was there in 2005 live firing heard around the camp area. The large square building out on its own with strange antennas around it is directly above a sea cave you can hear the crashing of waves sounds coming from the window shutters (no glass)of this building, Im guessing there is a connection between the two which is a bit of an oddity. lots of old mine workings and shafts about this area, but this does not explain why you should be able to hear the sound of crashing waves from this build. Anybody out there know why.?
i admire matts vidio work its the best on utube sometimes..when his gimble works ..lol but i thans matt..hope he does a book off or vidio off all the best vault- ings shenahenanigans..less the prodagee ..hanger on that spoil a good find..sound and act like holigans on some of your later shoots..matt..it dont do you any justice.. peps.. fireing off C02 extingwishers..great work shame on the nutters..
Glad I found this but also quite sad...I spent 2 weeks here on annual camp when I was in the army cadets in the early 80's & have great memories of the place, now it's just left to rot....why??
I enjoyed watching this. I do know the bleak look on an army camp. I were born in Salisbury Wiltshire, and brought up in the army till I were at junior school. Anyway cool footage.
The land was sold off by MOD several years ago to property developer. Site previously used for recuperation of troops following deployment. Number of troops recovered from Dunkirk were housed at location died when site bombed by Luftwaffe. Many buildings built 1940 some by the US military. There would be significant use of asbestos in construction. Plans for farmhouse to be made into liveable property. Planning application been submitted. All researchable on net. MOD sold due to excess stock and cost required to maintain compared to use. Most of expense of building etc would have been 1940s 50s.
We are making a documentary about this base and are looking to interview persons stationed here about their experiences in the camp from 1939 onwards. Please get in touch if you know anyone that can share their stories 😊
In the early 80s it was a army cadet training camp for annual camps and possibly the reason it isn't developed is the disused mine shafts all over the site
Did some adventure training there a few years ago it was a lovely camp Shame people vandalise these sites but from what I heard the land was sold off to property development company and development plan was rejected.
Matt another great video I’m disgusted to see all those abandoned buildings and land areas just going to be waste? it just goes to show that MOD yet once again after them using the site are not interested in what happens to Base Camp and as We are all aware people are in desperate need of homes for the community and they could be turned into affordable modern properties 👍😊
They are single breeze block walls sinificant levels of asbestos as is the case with most military buildings built that era. To make them fit for living purposes would be ridiculously expensive. Owned by a development company since 2010.
Used to drive through there to get to the RNWS Penhale wireless station were I used to service the receivers. Sad to see it fall into disrepair. But as to all the flippant remarks about homelessness etc there is a reason why these places exist ... asbestos is bloody expensive to clean up and is the reason why it hasn’t been demolished. The MOD doesn’t probably have the money to do it at present but it will happen at some point and the land will be sold off and r£claimed. It really annoys me as an ex RAF serviceman who used to be familiar with these places and knows their use to hear all these stupid half arsed ignorant remarks on why things are the way they are and all the stupid conspiracies .... so fucking ignorant.
What a shame to see that Site go to waste someone should buy this site be great camping & caravan Park holiday flats National trust or lotto should do this place up it,s got good business potential
The amount of Asbestos in this place it would cost millions to cleanup and many years sad they choose to let it rot and would not wont to live near as it be released as it decays
What a waste of commonwealth money! Who ever is responsible should be Hung! The bastards! Was this for kiddies? Air rifle range? Slug guns are for under 16’s! Seems like kiddies boot camp! Yeah Matt, I hear ya when you say “assholes creamin’ them selves over a bit ov copper wire! It makes me angry just watching this monumental waste of money that could have been better spent on so many other things! 😩 Should put use a Go-Pro - Angel Cam - and she can capture the shit you can’t be bothered with, and just drop whatever in the final cut! Love your commentary Matt, your a legend ! 😎👍

It makes me sick to see all the empty buildings that could have been converted to houses unbelievable, thanks for showing this to us.
Went here in '98 or '99 with the ACF. Best Annual Camp ever!

I spent some time here with the Air Training Corps, it's a shame it was left to rot, but the training area wasn't all that safe due to mine shafts.
Awesome content as usual Matt ! The drone work you do is incredible..great perspective from up so high! Thanks for your hard work!
