I legitimately have been striking the edge since I started playing when I was 12. I'm almost 30 and never realized, and was never told to hit the bow. I've cracked and broken so many cymbals over the years from zildjian a customs to paiste 2002s within MONTHS of purchasing them new, not knowing why. I was to the point where I was about to just buy an E kit and be done with acoustics altogether. This has legit helped me in a very real way. Thanks Zildjian.
Nicola Righetto Actually it keeps the drummer from having to bend their wrists to get a nice, full crash sound. The Meinl dry and dark cymbals are thin and flexible enough to where they won't crack as easily from being struck at a negative angle.
Populism is a way to make an excuse for directioning their cymbals the wrong way..in the video about the making of "higher ground" by Dave Weckl , Weckl mocks Chris Coleman by saying he plays his cymbals in the wrong direction ..well , mark my words all those Coleman fanboys direct their cymbals like him...go ahead and break them , Meinl laughs his ass off!
I use an 18" K Custom fast crash tilted back behind my floor tom and I absolutely hammer it. It looks new after 7 or 8 years and that was purchased second hand. If it was flat it would be awkward to hit where it is placed. I think it looks dope too having super low cymbals tilted back. I get non stop compliments for looking and sounding very unique with my style.
Hi Otto, most likely you are still striking the cymbal correctly. You can tilt the cymbal any way you like if it suits your style and body. As long as you're not striking through the cymbal or straight onto the edge, you're good to go. What we show here is geared towards most drummers' style.
i’ve been playing for three years, and i didn’t know you could buy sleeves to prevent metal-on-metal contact. my allowing youtube to autoplay videos has finally brought me some useful info.
I'm a Paiste guy, but much respect to Zildjian for this video! So nice of a company to learn their consumers how to protect their gear so that it lasts longer, despite the fact that it probably leads to the comapany selling a bit less cymbals! More people should know about this stuff.
Because of videos like these, I'm going to switch from Sabian. It seems to me that Zildjian actually cares about your cymbals. They make videos on how to clean them and stuff like that. By Christmas I'll be a Zildjian man.
I've used Zildjian ever since I started drumming and almost no other cymbals sound as good as my home set.

You're not endorsed, so choose your cymbals for their sound, not the brand ! I personally don't care about what is written on the cymbal, as long as the sound fits my music.
Joe King from my experience, anything less than a k or an a coustom will not sound very good. Ur making a mistake. Unless u can afford all k’s and a’s, I would not use zildjian. use Paiste because everything from their lower lines sound great too.
Ive had the same Zildjian Planet Z 18in Crash ride and 14 inch hats my dad gave me. They are about 40 years old now and the crash ride only JUST started cracking last year. Zildjian and Zildjian only from now on.
I wish I had seen this before I cracked my Zildjian crash :( I was definitely in violation of striking the edge and got a crack just like in the video (but smaller)
hey Zildjian? what about the players who enjoy thinner crashes but to play heavier music? I personally have found that thinner cymbals, when hit/mounted properly, last longer than their heavier/thicker counterparts. thoughts?
Andrew Konkey I would think it's due to thinner cymbals have more flex/wobble when struck compared to the heavier more brittle cymbals. Zildjian a's for me always have cracked around the bow area where as a harder metal like the zcustom have broke on the edge. That's just my guess?
Quick Question, As I've seen before with some gigs I've played in the past, there would be no top felt nor a wing nut at the top. Would this damage cymbals (Normally I wouldn't care but I just got a new expensive cymbal from you guys and now I actually am curious)? Thanks :)
If you're using a rubber sleeve and bottom felt, you will be fine if you aren't using a top wing nut or felt. The top felt is to prevent the cymbal from contacting the wing nut. As long as the cymbal isn't coming into contact with the exposed metal mount above the sleeve, you aren't in danger of keyholing your cymbal. However, we can't say we haven't seen the odd energetic drummer pop a cymbal off the stand that wasn't secured with a wing nut.
Dear Zildjian, sorry for of topic. Just want to ask why I can't find the K Custom Hybrid 1250 cymbal pack released October 8, 2016. Thanks & God bless you!
So would low down flat cymbals be ok? Also it's kind of funny how they say not to have high, flat cymbals but one of their most well known artists (Travis Barker) does that not hating on him
Is it okay to keep ride cymbal tight? I usually keep it tight so it kinda sounds nicer and I do play smoothly and I've had it for 4 years and not a single crack.
1:27 who would do this you ask? Well, Anika Nilles do that, and she's a damn good drummer. Not personally my favorite way to mount cymbals, but seems to work for her.
The "just right" tightening is actually the closest the nut can go but there is not enough felt to make any contact of pressure on the cymbal. Just dumb and makes you hit the edge of the cymbal when striking in quarter or eighth notes.
Hey, a lot of the time, I see cracks that form in circular arcs half-way or 1/3 of the way out the radius of the cymbal. What causes those? They are fine cracks, often closed, and they are the shape of smiles. Well, frowns would be more appropriate. They tend to wreck the sustain. How can we prevent these, what causes them, and is there any way to repair them? Scrap brass is only $1.40 per lb! :(
Ok so I got a crash cymbal shipped to my house by fed ex and it was delivered this morning and it is now 3 o’clock and it is cold outside. I am really starting to panic!!!! I cannot get home till like 6. Will my cymbal be ok? Someone pleaaase answer back ASAP because I am panicking because it is an expensive cymbal
I play mine low and flat and hit the bow with more of a swing. Still occasionally will get caught up in the moment and hit a edge to hard. Broke a zcustom medium crash 18" month ago :( first cymbal broke in years.
I think sometimes no matter how good you are at doing all this a cymbal can still crack. I had an 18 " A Custom Projection crash crack on me recently after 2 years and I've had my 19"' ACPC for going on 8 years now.
I quit using felts on the top because I kept destroying Avedis series splash cymbals. Even following the advise of keeping them loose!!! Since removing top felts AND wing nuts, I haven't cracked a cymbal since. I don't see where the logic of "not good" for not using top felts...
I dont use felts on the top because i like the cymbal to be as free as possible, but instead of using a metal wingnut i use the tama cm8p plastic screw which goes all the way down to the sleeve so there is no metal contact whatsoever! :)
If you can avoid hitting the cymbal in a way that will damage it, feel free to tilt it any degree you like if it feels more comfortable. For example, some drummers tilt their cymbals away but will still strike the cymbal with proper technique. The tips presented in the video are geared to help raise awareness as to why your cymbals might be breaking and how to reduce the chance of broken cymbals. The tips are not only to help you avoid breakage, but to get the widest range of sound from your cymbals as well.
What if you play like I do? If you hit the cymbal the right way (the bow) but as soon as you hit it you come right back up. I'm not hiring through the cymbal, but I'm not sliding off the side either.
+Srdjan Devic That type of cracking might happen for a few reasons: 1) You're hitting the cymbal directly on the edge and pushing it into the cymbal stand/tilter 2) You're striking directly on the middle of the bow (when crashing) 3) In very rare cases, there is a defect in the cymbal.
I never use a top felt or wing nut on the top of my cymbals... never cracked a cymbal. and glancing to the side is impractical if your actually crashing on your crash, instead of just accenting, or in this case; demonstrating.
Using a top felt mainly protects the cymbal from hitting the wing nut, so if you aren't using a wing nut the felt wouldn't be necessary, although we've seen cymbals pop off the stand if you're a heavy hitter. Glancing may not be the most appropriate motion for every hit and situation, but we are gearing toward getting drummers to not strike down through the cymbal. Recoiling upwards with your hit is as safe as glancing to the side.
Avedis Zildjian Company plus if you slice through your cymbals like I've seen a lot of metal drummers in my circle do, you put too much stress in the outer edge of a cymbal and it cracks a lot easier. I saw a guy that managed to crack a really heavy Z3 19" Rock Crash in the course of one 8-song set, because he mounted his cymbal straight up, ratcheted his cymbal down with 4 felts, and struck on the edge with heavy 2B sticks
anika "would do this", & whomever she got the cymbal tilting idea from, but she seems to have them low enough to still hit them at the right angle. & my experience with metal on metal ( especially on threaded metal ) is it makes the cymbal hole wider, which is almost as bad as cracking. almost.
My buddy is a heavy metal drummer (I'm just a typical rock and jazz drummer), and he was telling me how he hates blowing through cymbals like he does with sticks and heads. When I couldn't relate, I saw that his cymbals had several felts packed in there and the wing nuts were tighter than shit. It also didn't help that he slams his cymbals really hard on the edge. With proper setup and technique, cymbals should last a lifetime.
should have used Anvil for the metal on metal reference...
I'm a big fan of your videos
Omg I subscribe to you
I know I do too
Hi David!
rdavidr thats hilarious!

Somebody send this to Jared dines
LMAOO
My uncle could of used this advice, maybe he would of led a crack free life too...he has a problem
That would be the wrong kind of crack my friend
OOoooh reeeeeaaaalllyyyy
* could have
* would have What POS school system let you graduate?
Clear, practical advice... Pay attention kids...
sah dude lol cool vids
That music made me think that a stereotypical white family from the early 90's was gonna jump out at the end and in unison say, "Thanks Zildjian!"
The music and buzzing sound effects were absolutely delightful. This video is awesome lol.
Should be required viewing for beginning drummers :)
Yes, I wish I had seen that before I cracked one at the rehearsal space... 😬
Now I know...
1:28 was definitely throwing shade at all the Meinl artists who tilt their cymbals away from them lol
Unless the cymbal is very VERY low, such a negative tilt has no real benefit for the drummer
Will Gaines so true! 😂 I know a former Meinl artist who did that lol
Yeah. Anika nilles popped in my head first. Ha
I use an 18" K Custom fast crash tilted back behind my floor tom and I absolutely hammer it. It looks new after 7 or 8 years and that was purchased second hand. I never said I was endorsed.... but I'm not like Sabian's sound
Smart but I’m a Meinl guy and I like zildjan to I use both
Joe King from my experience, anything less than a k or an a coustom will not sound very good. Ur making a mistake. Unless u can afford all k’s and a’s, I would not use zildjian. use Paiste because everything from their lower lines sound great too.
very helpful ive been tilting my cymbals for two years and i haven't broken any more cymbals. So this is a very good tip for, us drummers
very helpful! I had no idea why my cymbal broke, but now I know why.
1:26 Chris Coleman 😂
yep or nick pettersen.
Or Ray Luzier
Thanks for the good advise. Every drummer should know.👍
Thanks! All the basic tips nicely explained and illustrated.
Ive had the same Zildjian Planet Z 18in Crash ride and 14 inch hats my dad gave me. They are about 40 years old now and the crash ride only JUST started cracking last year. Zildjian and Zildjian only from now on.
Can you guys do one for Chinese cymbals of different kinds?
Great Video!
David Curtis Drumming
I wish I had seen this before I cracked my Zildjian crash :( I was definitely in violation of striking the edge and got a crack just like in the video (but smaller)
this should be in MOMA well done and truthful

Great! I'm not a very energetic drummer in general but I will keep that in mind thanks! I really appreciate it!
Crack is bad, don't do drugs! :D
Levente Fazekas lmao
Well you're extremely funny
Thanks I’ll use this for my Meinl Cymbals
Dear Zildjian, sorry for of topic. Just want to ask why I can't find the K Custom Hybrid 1250 cymbal pack released October 8, 2016. Thanks & God bless you!
I already knew all of these, which is why I've never cracked any cymbals! So in that case good tips for anybody who didn't know.
So would low down flat cymbals be ok?
Also it's kind of funny how they say not to have high, flat cymbals but one of their most well known artists (Travis Barker) does that
not hating on him
If you use the right technique, that's ok. Also, if you have the money to replace all your cymbals, there's no problem with that.
I'm surprised my A Customs have lasted as long as they have.. I definitely don't play them as good as I should :(.
1:27 had me in tears lol
This was hilarious and helpful hahaha thank you
Is it okay to keep ride cymbal tight? I usually keep it tight so it kinda sounds nicer and I do play smoothly and I've had it for 4 years and not a single crack.

P.S. I'm having a hard time what to get, Zildjian K Custom Worship pack or K Custom hybrid 1250 pack. Peace out!
Should you get a cymbal sleeve for all cymbals were it is old or new.
Nice tips.
I like my cymbals straight and high up tho...I never cracked a cymbal 12 years of playing...
The "just right" tightening is actually the closest the nut can go but there is not enough felt to make any contact of pressure on the cymbal.

Or maybe it's because I hit like Josh Dun and Jerod Boyd
I hit like Josh Dun xD
Same😂😂
omg i busted my snare head a few weeks ago from hitting it too hard
Then dont play like drummers that have bad technique
I quit using felts on the top because I kept destroying Avedis series splash cymbals. Even following the advise of keeping them loose!!! Since removing top felts AND wing nuts, I haven't cracked a cymbal since. I don't see where the logic of "not good" for not using top felts...

awesome! Love Zildjian!!
Why am I watching this video? I'm a guitar player...
Good question , so i dunno , but , my guitar sKILLs = lil wayne !!!!
Because deep down you wanna join the dark side and you know it!
What if you play like I do? If you hit the cymbal the right way (the bow) but as soon as you hit it you come right back up. I'm not hiring through the cymbal, but I'm not sliding off the side either.
That's perfectly fine to do as well and is pretty common!
tnx zildjian for that tip☺☺👍👍👍
Stop using quirky whistle music, everyone is doing this shit! Good video, once I muted it.
I hate it too!!
I use a product called the GRombal that addresses this problem quite well... and they're inexpensive too
Ironic that my first cymbal to shatter was my Zildjian. And I follow all of these instructions.
Cute video. I've been playing for 20 years and didn't know I was overtightening my cymbals.
gran video
I have (had) a 14" inch crash. I'd say I took about an inch off the ENTIRE radius of it.
A way I found to tilt the cymbal is to get it so gravity is with and not against it. That tilts it perfectly- Emmanuel
thanks zildjian! :D
EX-CE-LEN-TE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for you advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well done and with some humor too :-)
thanks for this
1:26 Anika Niles and Chris Coleman for two, but they use Meinl.
1:27 Probably Anika Nilles and sometimes Flo Mounier
What can we do about cracks in the middle of cymbals?
(like part of the circle cracks)
+Srdjan Devic That type of cracking might happen for a few reasons: 1) You're hitting the cymbal directly on the edge and pushing it into the cymbal stand/tilter 2) You're striking directly on the middle of the bow (when crashing) 3) In very rare cases, there is a defect in the cymbal.

In other words. After years of buying Zildjian. Don't be such an aggressive hard hitting drummer either :)
Show this video to Travis Barker and Morgan Rose lol
this is a good video
Now Im like a boss. Nice.
1:22 David Cola be like😂
I use The Grombal... check them out... saves from keyholes and other wear and tear
I just love this music
anika "would do this", & whomever she got the cymbal tilting idea from, but she seems to have them low enough to still hit them at the right angle.

ZILDJIAN
What a cool video :D
what about Chad smith's placement of his China?
My buddy is a heavy metal drummer (I'm just a typical rock and jazz drummer), and he was telling me how he hates blowing through cymbals like he does with sticks and heads. and sorry why the cymbals can cracked that follow the direction of turning? why?
Buy only Zildjian. Problem solved 👍👍👍
Nice!
A "Crack Free Life" is always a GOOD IDEA
Over 40 years of playing I've never broke one I must be doing something right.
I need help, I’ve already cracked 2 cymbals within 2 years
1:16 tell that to almost any drummer
Idk why I watch this a million times, I just do, I prefer sabian tho but great advice
1:35 , Fast Crash , sounds familiar to me 🤪🤪
You should also add to not play in cold rooms
Also don’t forget EASY ON THE LOGOS
The “too far forward” is a bit ok for Ride Cymbals
Most of this video is good altough "gently stroke the cymbal instead of hitting them"?? What if I am a rock drummer ?
this video: how to give the most basic info about cymbals you can without actually giving anything of substance
20 years of drumming. Not a single broken cymbal
