the netflix show feels like something that’d be a straight to dvd movie with a similar title to an already popular movie a decently behaved girls how-to on killing someone.
not that we didn't get THE "Real men wear floral by trespassing", but also Pip didn't wear any gloves while going into the Bell's house and like that there were many little things that somehow made Pip look dumber?!? like where is her bagpack with all the essentials ?!? idk she is smarter than that

Thanks for this rundown of the differences! I read the book after seeing the show, and totally forgot what the show did and didn't realise how bad the show actually was...
I didn't read the book and had no idea what happened going into the show but i will admit I only finished it because I was so confused on what was happening the whole time and every episode gave an answer and created 3 more would've say it was bad but it definitely wasn't the most compelling show that i needed to rewatch
The books were amazing, the adaptation was bad. Like with most bad adaptations, if the actual book didn’t exist it would be a great movie but since there’s a book it isn’t great. The casting was 10/10 tho, my only thing was the Ravi actor looking 23. He looked way too old to end up dating Pip, a 17 year old (or whatever her age was). We already have a lot of pedos in the series
the harry potter example you used when talking about UK books working in the US doesn't work that well, they literally "translated" the book into American English and localized most Britishisms in the book. sure, Hogwarts is still in Scotland, but iconic British snacks and phrases are switched out for American ones. US Harry Potter got changed a whole lot more than US AGGGTM.
i have been checkmated, though I still think it's silly to have 2 versions. I read the UK version first and had zero issue understanding the story, but I am also not everyone. I dunno 🤷♂️
I know someone already mentioned it about the golden retriever but please remember this was a BBC show that did not have a Netflix budget. And this was a low budget show for a BBC show which is saying something because a lot of BBC shows are not high budget shows anyway. They barely had money for costumes which is why pretty much all the clothes are from your average high street shops and they’re reused in multiple scenes. And yeah golden retrievers are too expensive hence them not having one.
i hear you... but i also find it really funny that they couldn't afford a golden retriever for the show. like super unfortunate but if that is the reason, its a little funny.
8:18 i will say regarding the football comment. In the UK football is soccer, not American football. Football players to us aren’t known for being massive and strong like your American football.
I only watched the first episode and decided nope I will not watch this, but one of the things I also dislike is that they casted such a... shady looking guy, for Elliot Ward? Whyyy Viewers are going to be onto him from the beginning!! The most hitting part of him being the villain is that he's so trust-able, so normal, your hope in humanity decreases a little when he's revealed to be the villain, you feel really cheated By making him so shady, they're taking alllll of that away Viewers are going to feel nothing about his reveal
Yeah I do wonder how I'd feel watching it WITHOUT knowing the book. A friend of mine did that and she said she also did not like the show, so, thats not a great sign LOL
the guy who plays elliot, matthew baynton, is an incredibly popular actor in the uk, best known for his work in horrible histories and bbc ghosts. as such uk viewers are far more likely to trust his character - hes known as a charming comedic actor and so his presence acts similarly to chris evans in knives out. personally i think it was the way his character was written in the show which caused the issue
OMGGG I WAS SO DISSAPOINTED i talked it up so much to my family before we watched it how could holly jackson let this hapennn😭😭 season 2 got announced and I wasn't even happy

She fought so hard to get certain scenes in (e.g. real men wear florals when trespassing) and they just refused. They weren’t even gonna include Sarge but Holly thankfully managed to convince them. But luckily Holly is a writer for s2 so it will be a lottt better
Actually there's also the scene where pip and cara are trying to convince naomi to go to the reunion party and cara says:"come on jamie reynolds will be there"which hints that they would make naomi and jamie a couple instead of nat and Jamie. It's not that big of a thing i mean naomi deserved something but nat and jamie were so cute😭 and i hope that now Holly Jackson is writing the script for season 2 it'll be better .
One thing that drove me insane about this show is how much they make everything about race. In the book Ravi being Indian is barely a plot piont. It’s never used as a way to insult her or her family, her dad is never made to feel bad because of being black or not feeling like he fit into the family. Like race and racism just isn’t a plot piont, and in the show they blow it so out of proportion
No actually it’s a HUGE plot point you must have completely misunderstood the book. Literally the WHOLEEEE point is how the town treat the Singh family horrifically and that Sal isn’t once mourned by the town because of racism, and how andie is worshipped and has a mural painted despite being part of really shady business and being a bully to Nat particularly. It’s very clear in the book. Stanley’s article was based on racism and prejudice, for which he apologises later on. It’s not implied in the slightest.
I was so disappointed with the show tbh it was really weird I expected much better from a BBC adaptation 🥲 (Made by BBC, and it was distributed to the US by Netflix)
