    The H-8s and AGs came equipped with an air operated whistle control valve. This meant you could not quill the whistle on a real life 2-6-6-6.

    Because Lima called the CLASS of the 2-6-6-6 the Allegheny coz of their first order in 41 and they are catalogued as such in my grandfather's LIMA LOCOMOTIVE WORKS yearly public catalogue!! He could walk over from Westinghouse (where he worked ) and get most publications from his friend ! Lionel is naming the class H7 Allegheny!! Thank you Eric for letting others know NOT just C&O operated this class it had more HP than Alco's Big Boy UP just used their proud flagship to more efficiency than the C&O !! Keep up the great reviews and by now everyone should know we can turn off crew talk "out" lol

    I have been looking forward to this review for months. Excellent job as always Eric and thanks for mentioning #1601 and #1604! I live 30 minutes away from The Henry Ford and I love #1601. I still remember the first time standing at the front of that monster for a photo at 4 years old. I hope to get to #1604 someday.

      Walter's Trains Sometimes you don't have a choice. Locomotives can be landlocked with no rail around for miles. And after super large amounts of deterioration it can be impossible to put locomotives together again. And while it's sad to see any locomotive go sometimes it's just necessary

    • @walterstrains5390
      @walterstrains5390 7 років тому +5

      Unfortunately I agree. Me being a huge fan of steam locomotives since I was born makes me sad to know how lucky I am to have rode behind a Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotive at Hesston Steam Museum when I was a toddler. Most steam locomotives are lucky if a Museum uses them for displays, or even get brought back to life. Treasure every moment you get to see a steam locomotive under it's own power! Chances are, you might get another chance at it again!

    Another cool feature in the cab is you can open the access to the firebox. I haven't seen that on any other steam engines and it is nice to see the engine go by with a nice glow of red coming from the cab. Great video Eric!!

  • @TobyPasman

    Lionel’s very first rendition of the Allegheny was made in the late 1990s and was modeled after C&O #1601. The same goes for the UP Big Boy. The very first Big Boy made by Lionel was modeled after UP #4006. Both the Allegheny and Big Boy were equipped with TMCC.

    Great locomotive and video. An interesting fun fact is that the Virginian "Blue Ridge" locomotive, No. 906, which is what you have, was used as the basis for Sam in Thomas and Friends.

  • @TobyPasman
    @TobyPasman 7 років тому

    Lionel first made the C&O Allegheny in the late 1990s. It was equipped with TMCC and was numbered 1601.

  • @allegheny48
    @allegheny48 7 років тому +10

    Thanks for the informative review, Eric. Just for the record those 9 round objects that are positioned on each side of the bottom half of the firebox, and are connected via piping, are overfire jets and were not used on the Virginian AG's. Those were only used on the final batch of H8's that LIMA built for the C&O and included cab numbers 1644 - 1659. So that detailing does not belong on the other C&O cab numbers presently being offered. Lionel, in the past, has released both the first and the final versions of the Allegheny and should have been aware of the differences. The "add on detail" between the feed water heater and the smoke stack is the exhaust for the steam driven cross compound air pumps mounted on the smokebox. All that being said enjoy running the Blue Ridge. It can probably walk away with whatever you couple to its tank. If interested see if your library can obtain a copy of Allegheny Lima's Finest by Eugene Huddleston. I think you will enjoy it.

    • @henryszubielski8601
      @henryszubielski8601 7 років тому +3

      allegheny48 - Another thing that Mr. Huddleston pointed out in that book was that these engines had very good speed on flat terrain. Supposedly the C&O intended for that, but primarily used them more for the strength..

    • @allegheny48
      @allegheny48 7 років тому +5

      The C&O basically used them in the mountains for coal drags; one on each end of the train. However, in their final years some of them were used in Ohio where they could run at speed. They also were known for hauling long heavyweight troop/POW trains at 60-70 mph during WWII. Wouldn't it be interesting to pit an H8 against a Big Boy?

    Let's say the RAILROAD Company that had the most of these Locomotives gets to NAME the Locomotive; C&O = 60 Virginian = 8
    Therefore; "ALLEGHENY" it is. LOL!

    Well Eric...
    One thing that you can say about your review of this engine is not only that you did your usual very thorough review of the 2-6-6-6, but also you can be certain that no one else will ever do a better job of it! It seems that you understandably may prefer not to go into a lot of detail about your educational background, but you seem very comfortable when it comes to technical aspects of the hobby. Do you by any chance have an engineering degree and if so where did you go to get it? Looking forward to the presentation on transformers and curious as to any limits your layout has regarding multiple unit combinations/lash-ups from the standpoint of allowable track or circuit current capacity? As always, thanks for your excellent work!

    Great review as usual Eric. I like how detailed you are, especially to newcomers to he hobby that don't understand certain things such as "Wheel Arrangements" that identify specific steam locomotives. Also I like how to try to clear up the air about certain things so you don't get remarks or comments stating something that you possibly overlooked. You cover your bases very well. Question, how does the pulling power compare to either your "Challenger", Cab Forward" or the infamous "Big Boy" you own? This one seems like the best puller you have! Thanks, Tom

    Quick question here. Hi Eric. This model has overfire jets on the sides of the firebox. On the C&O, these overfire jets appeared on the higher number locomotives so the Lionel models numbered 1601, 1604 and 1608 are not prototypical. If they would have numbered them 1648 or 1650 (like the JLC model) then the jets are correct. Now, that being said, do you know if the Virginian Blueridge locomotives had the overfire jets like your model? I'm not sure. I guess I could search for photos.

    Agreed, really nice locomotive and super whistle. I also mostly enjoy the crew talk. However, Lionels most annoying feature on their "crew talk" is when the dispatcher tells the engineer of a STEAM locomotive to "Start her up and stand by." like the engineer will just turn the key on a steam locomotive ignition and and it is suddenly ready to go. Really, Lionel ? Anyone with Lionel ever been on a real steam locomotive ?
