I must say that if it wasn't for your reviews on these higher end locomotives I would never get close to them. We buy second hand and mostly off of that "Famous on Line auction place" so the info you share is valuable. My wife, in profile photo, has the "O" scale stuff for her ceramic buildings. I just love to watch 'em roll by. Thank You. Greg and Jeanne
Eric, you did a great review on another great engine! Thanks for taking the time! I have the 3rd Rail version of the "Patrick Henry" (#601 class J3), but this review makes me want to buy this model!!! 😁
I saw a video where the 614 was on a bridge inside a valley screaming to the heavens, I wonder if that's where they got the quilling whistle because of the echo or if they digitally created it. look up "steam whistle talent - Steve Wickersham" on UA-cam.
An excellent review, Eric! Those J3a's are one of my favorite steam locomotives. MTH did a great job on this release. In realism and detailing it far exceeds the original release from 1999. I feel that the reason MTH changed engine #602 to #612 is that the J3a would not have been an accurate rendition of the 602 which was noticeably different. One little known fact is that the J3a's were originally intended to have a streamlined shroud similar to the L class Hudsons, one of which, resides at the museum in Baltimore. Hence the solid pilot, combined sand and steam domes along with a few other special design features. Although I cannot vouch for the authenticity of the whistle it does sound great and the bell sound is authentic for that class engine being that they were activated by an air ringer. Most any video of C&O 614 will verify that. One of my favorite features are the Timken roller bearing rods with the tandem side rods between the 2nd and 3rd drivers. Those absorbed piston thrust.
I wonder why moving baker gear isn't a more prevalent feature in the newer steam locomotive models. I have the PS 2.0 version of this steamer which also has moving baker gear, but there are a lot of PS 3.0 models that don't have it. It's quite simple to do afterall; instead of having the bell crank pinned to the gear connecting rod; they've created a sliding slot connection, which allows the bell crank to move independently of the gear connecting rod. This in turn allows the bell crank to be driven by the movements of the valve rod and the combination lever. You'd think that MTH would want to use this for more steamers equipped with baker gear, since it looks slightly more prototypical.
as far as I now, in the early eighties, the 614 was actually used in revenue service through the New River Gorge on the Chessie hauling coal trains. it was used as 614T to experiment new cleaner burning coal for the ACE 3000.
MTH really nails it when it comes to valve gear/lubricatior rod detail. Mainly because it's there unlike other modelers and the fact that it moves. Lionel's done that a few times but not as consistent as MTH
Great review and very objective. Despite the large gap between engine and tender, your review will prompt me to order one of these for my collection. Your reviews are comprehensive. Wish they would have made the passenger announcement for the George Washington.
I think that the C&O USRA Heavy Pacific that they made might have that in its station announcements. The Imperial Streamlined Hudson has the Fast Flying Virginian.
Hi Eric! I need some help. I have model trains but i have a problem with getting enough track power so i was wondering if you could tell me how you get enough track power Thanks!
@@westtexasrailfan he's Profile picture is a photo from Olympic the older sister from Titanic and I tell you it's probably the best troop transport ship I know that served in the war
AWESOME engine and review Eric! MTH does a great job with their passenger PFA, sounds great, but I'm not a big fan of their chuffing sounds (needs more bass)! Anyways, thanks for the video bro!
Does anyone know what other cities are mentioned in the PFA sequence? Norfolk, VA. Richmond, VA, and Detroit, MI, are in the video. They would have to be any 3 of these: Newport News, VA, Charlottesville, VA, White Sulphur Springs, WV, Charleston, WV, Huntington, WV, Ashland, KY, Columbus, OH, and Toledo, OH.
i do believe that the C&O got some of these engines from the RF&P railroad, which was a very famous and profitable road. Which operated from Alexandria Virginia to Richmond Va. It was a short lined and it seems that MTH, for some reason never made a premier model of the Northern type engines of the RF&P line which used the vanderbilt tender.
During a mid 1950's surge in freight traffic the C&O borrowed a handful of RF&P 4-8-4's which were also numbered in the 600 series. One that was borrowed was RF&P 614 so C&O's 614, which had been recently pulled out of storage, had its cab number changed to 611 by use of a chisel and hammer. Her original 614 cab number was only restored after Ross Rowland acquired and restored her back to service.
I really cannot pick if I want the Lionel Greenbrier thats up for pre order or the Brass Hybrid Challenger in the 2022 Vol. 2 catalog, I know this is MTH, but I'm trying to see how it looks.
That MTH C&O 612 is Really Upsets Me But I Like the Lionel C&O 612 With the Paint Scheme Way Cooler and When Will the Lionel C&O 612 Chessie Train Arrive
Eric this is phenomenal. great review of a classic Loco and model. Do you have any reviews of O scale 2 rail equipment and conversion steps from 3 rail? I believe there are 2 rail products available but am researching this. Pricing? Need your expert advice and suggestions. I have a 15 x 22 basement space and wonder if that is enough space for O scale. Thanks so much.
Let me try this again, my mac book auto corrected some stuff. I am a blind person wanting to get started into MTH Trains. Please make a video of where the buttons are on the DCS commander, and where they are? like what i mean is, starting from the top buttons, and moving down the remote. I am so fascinated, i didn't know if a totally blind person such as myself, can run the MTH Trains.
I rlly want one of these engines but I have a small layout , not wide enough turns for an engine this size , the running system for an engine like this and they just cost too much , is there any good lion chief , lion chief plus or lion chief 2.0 steam engines that are on the larger side that I can get for cheep?
The quilting whistle is I’m pretty sure the same whistle as the mth reading and northern 425 the light blue color not the new dark blue one since I own the light blue 425
Understood. You have so many other videos to make one didn't have time to make another. I'm guessing the MTH A-B-A review is coming out soon. Can't wait!
SkrezzyTrainGuy The light isn't flickering. The camera makes it look like it's doing that. I own plenty of new MTH Premier Line locomotives and they don't do that on my engines in person. It's the camera, not the engine.
I like very much your videos but I have a bit of a question! why did you opted for the three rail version of the O scale against the two rail version? It is so much unrealistic! Your layout is outstanding but sincerely it would look much better in two rail version! thank you very much for responding!
hello Eric. I am a blind person who wants to get started in running math trains. Can you please make a video about where the buttons are on the dos commander, and what they do? and i don't know if i will need sighted assistance while programming an engine into the remote.
PM 1225 (the Polar Express locomotive) is a 2-8-4, but she was built by the same builder (Lima Locomotive works). Also the Pere Marquette and the C&O where owned by the same holding company. So you could think of the PM Berkshires and the Greenbriers as second cousins.
One might say that the Lima-built C&O Kanawhas were first cousins to the Pere Marquette/Nickel Plate Road Berkshires, while the ALCO-built ones are second cousins.
A 4 - 8 - 4 steam locomotive by any name is still awesome! Great video great engine.
Even after all this time, this is by far the best whistle I've ever heard on a model steam locomotive
Hi Eric, no one does a review like you. You're the best...Frank

Wow. MTH has really out done themselves with this locomotive. Moving baker valve gear, great whistle, accurate bell ring rate, just awesome.
Nothere27 That bell ring is accurate? Seems awfully fast to me.
If you watch videos of the 614, the ring rate is this fast.
Not for a stationary bell.
Yes it is
I was responding to Matt-Trainlover9943's comment, not Nothere27's comment. Sorry for the confusion.

I love it but I think I will wait for an MTH Premier Line Chesapeake & Ohio 2716 2-8-4 Kanawha.
Me too gotta love the MTH
I love the way the drivers look on the Greenbriers and the N&W J Class Northerns
I’m hoping to get one of these someday it looks so beautiful

Great review! Lol, Erics not gonna stop buying 4-8-4s until he has one from every railroad.
I agree great whistle. Great model.

I've never seen you run your trains that FAST !
Hey Eric, can you please bring back the bloopers that you used to put at the ends of your videos. I ❤️ them.
Trainman 419 I still do them, but only if I actually have some to put in. I didn't have any for this video.
Hi Eric! I need some help. I have model trains but i have a problem with getting enough track power so i was wondering if you could tell me how you get enough track power Thanks!
Gina Dean add more transformers
I like the mixed consist. It looks like an excursion of private railcar owners.
Eric you should make a building called "Erics trains" the business sells model trains
I thought it was a good idea :)
R.M.S Olympic he already did! By the way I love your profile picture!

Actually Eric, they called it the Greenbrier because of the Greenbrier River.
What a beautiful steam engine.
Eric, When will your review of the Lionel smoke fluid loader be out?
This Is Great We Love Trains 🚂 🚂 🚂 We All Love 😘 😘 😘 🚂🚂🚂😊😊😊💕💕💕
I don't even like 4-8-4s but i was in love just looking at the thumbnail. I hope someone makes an ho model of this.
Broadway Limited makes HO models of this engine but they're out of stock at the moment.
PS! I watched your Layout Update #7 - Appalachian & Western Railroad
so I have your answer ! thank you !
Very nice Eric!
when you were talking about the Fire box a small piece of hair or something flew by lol

This Is Chesapeake & Ohio J3a Greenbrier They Were Named Northerns After The Northern Pacific Railroad J3a Greenbirer
Eric the other two paint schemes of the 614 aren't they the chessie safety express and the ace 3000 proyect
like both steam Whistle. very cool.
I live in Strasburg Virginia Clifton forge is two hours away

Fantastic!
I'm really glad to see more C&O models coming out. Do they make a nice C&O passenger train car set for O scale?
What MTH need to make is a model of the C&O Hudson with the yellow paint scheme in the premier line.
I'd like to see more C&O models made all the way around but, I'm a huge C&O fan lol
I wish I had a train like that
The greenbrier is good but the K3 Mikado is the most Godly engine on the C&O (in my opinion).

I'm new to modeling railroad. I've been collecting HO SCALE but this is great. Is this "0" SCALE? Love it. best whistle iv heard.
Robert Dickson O scale it is.
That's awesome!
I recommend the DCS app to get a clear quilling whistle
you've got to upgrade your camera, the 24 fps is so choppy and it doesn't look great to watch, but nice video!
EarliestBook49 60fps would be amazing
i must agree
For the price the draw bar kit should be included, not something you have to buy. Plus the screws just under the stack at the boiler front?
Did they make 611 with smoke deflectors?
She's beautiful
You got that right, 210% agreed
I like that train it’s awesome
Great video! What do you use for your rail finish?
Thanks

So Eric, the locomotive sounds come from the tender and not the locomotive, right?
And.yes it was pulled by 614
such a lovely train, by mth
I will be selling ALL of my O-SCALE trains and tracks on E-Bay starting in April. I am downsizing to HO scale.
Ryan what's in your collection?
hey Eric how many 4-8-4 locomotives do you have
Hey Eric Lionel has the CO 21 inch passenger cars
The quilting whistle is I’m pretty sure the same whistle as the mth reading and northern 425 the light blue color not the new dark blue one since I own the light blue 425
Pretty neat
can you review the longisland railroad subway please
LIRR Subway? Do you mean the LIRR M Units or the NYC Subway train?
mta subway
NYC sub
Oh I see. Yeah those would be cool. The New LIRR G5 would be cool too
___Axg96 ___ yep
Eric or anyone who may know, what whistle is the quail whistle. Would really love to know.
Is 614 ever gonna be running again?
No I don't think so
Eric, did you hear? Atlas O is not making trains anymore. They just announced it this morning. Sad day for some of us. :(
April Fools
Yep!
I've liked every April fools video you've done. You should do more.
I will do more. I just didn't have to time to do one this year.

My brain hurts reading some of these comments.
R u in Florida? I’d love 2 see your layout
No, Georgia
The crew talking was kinda like the j3a Hudson as you start it up, the bell sound is like it too but faster, I also liked the standard whistle better
you should get the MTH Chessie Steam Special 2101
614 is most famous from hauling the chessie safety express
Humph... MTH always has that stupid flickering light.... But anyway, Nice video Eric!

Greenbrier river
Dang mth is on a role!
Idk why but I feel the whistle should be on a Mohawk NYC
Is it just me, or does the quilting whistle sound like the a.t.s.f blue goose whistle?
I hope Lionel makes one
You forgot about another first class express train : the C&O safety express

Eric what are the flags for and what do they mean?
Steamking Number 15 serve the same function as class lights. Green usually meant 2nd section of a train.
This the first time I saw so much steam come of a lionel train
Hey Eric, will you plz update your website? like if u agree THX
Why is it not 614?
Wait! You can’t use that New York Central observation Car Because People can say “This is Not the 20th Century Limited.
Chessie safety express 614
Mth knows there engines

I meant MTH.
This is basically what a class j would have look liked from the N&W without the streamlining because there both class js
It kind of looks like they reused the headlight mounted numberboards from an N&W J3
Laurie Sarquis - When you look at an unshrouded N&W J class, it is very different. And, the neat thing is that MTH did the unshrouded version as well.
The Reason I’m saying it because the New York Central Observation Car has the drumhead Saying 20th Century Limited.
lionel should make these including 614
kind of reminds me of The Polar Express
PM 1225 (the Polar Express locomotive) is a 2-8-4, but she was built by the same builder (Lima Locomotive works). Also the Pere Marquette and the C&O where owned by the same holding company. So you could think of the PM Berkshires and the Greenbriers as second cousins.
pmsteamrailroading thanks for the info

I'm surprised you didn't get a Freedom Train.
