  • Hey everyone,
For those unaware, I do a little bit of recording at my house, mostly to satisfy my gear collecting hobbies but also to record whatever music I'm working on at any given time. I bought this Model 32 at the recommendation of an old Home Recording Studio book targeted at musicians building home studios before the project studio boom of the 90s. I bought it, knowing full well that it was broken, and in need of repair that I thought I could provide it, and eventually I did get it working and hope to use it as a mastering deck in my studio upstairs.
    Thanks for watching folks.

You did a great job on that deck. I just got my first Tascam 32, not delivered yet, and I’m trying to find video on how to replace the VU Meter lamps.

Thanks! I cant remember spending a lot of time looking at the VU meters, but I'd love to believe that replacing the lamps that is easy, since I see loads of old VU gear that needs those lamps replaced. Hope its easy enough for you and you can get it up and running like new

@@TyCrawford thank Ty for such a quick response. I found a place in the UK that may have some and frosted on top of that.

What size was the hex key needed for the set screws on the knobs to remove the faceplate?

Do you know how to flatten a reel table? The left side on mine is a bit uneven

Great video thank you, do you have any idea and how lubricate that machine? I have the same exactly like that but seems like it need oil to play the reel properly.

I dont offhand; my experience in RC left me always very cautious of how to lubricate gears and mechanical bits, if at all. One golden rule I found was that almost any variety of grease is gonna trap within it any contaminant that gets to it and as such, its always really important to use as little of a lubricant and presumably one that is as viscous as is absolutely necessary, and no more. I'm in a Facebook Group or two on Analog Recording and Dawless Recording, both of which deal with a lot of folks who use and service their own reel-to-reels, and they have been a great resource in my journey so far.

Super! I have the 38 Modell and sometimes all 8 VU s don’t have light, than they light up after hours.. can you guess where the problem is? I have 2 ideas, but do I need the front, or back plate for checking the light path? Regards from Germany Steve

      Hey Steve!
Its my understanding that in many ways, the Model 32 and the Model 38 are very similar. I think the board I had to replace here is actually identical to the control board that is in your unit, which is in charge of the transport functions. The I/O function boards, however, are in the lower third-or-so of the unit, and I didn't get into that section of my Model 32.
I do know, however, that in the bottom of the unit is a motherboard with several card-edge PCBs on it. There are also a variety of connectors, much like those seen on the control board in my video, that have various ins and outs, and one of the functions handled by these connectors is the VU meters. On my model, and based on a quick search through the service manual for the Tascam 38, it seems that all the bulbs in the VU meters are connected together, and on mine, there is a dedicated circuit in the power supply that handles that (not uncommon for old bulbs). While the service manual PDF i have is a little blurry, it looks like the bulbs for the VU meters on your unit are powered off a 2 pin connector on the motherboard, labeled maybe P172 or J172? Its definitely 2-pins. Check that connection for sure. Also, double check all the fuses, since one fuse is for the dedicated light bulb circuit. The fuses are accessible at the top of the deck once you take off the outer shell, and they're serviceable.
Hope this helps. If you can get your hands on a proper Tascam printed service manual (I have two: one for my Tascam MS-16 and my Tascam M-520, some of THE best service manuals I've ever had for anything, ever), I can help walk through it more. Additionally, if you wanna film what's going on, we could collaborate and get this thing fixed for you.

@@TyCrawford thanx a lot that will help a lot after the weekend I will open up this old lady..( sounds weired 🤔)
I also have a problem on input 6, the VU is not moving for incoming signal but I will see if there will be a playback on this channel by play back an older mix. If so it can be the driver for the VU as well I read.
I don’t know where the input/output connection is to the VU but I ve seen, how somebody calibrated the mashine and the slots are on the bottom of the mashine after removing the shell.. are you familiar to this?
      Best wishes outa Germany 🇩🇪
