Living in Colombia is as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be. If you are coming to live as opposed to being a tourist, set out your requirements before you come, it will save a lot of confusion in the long run.
If you want to live in the city, in an Expat enclave, and have the funds to do so, then El Poblado or Laureles is possibly for you. bear in mind that this video, is still looking at tourist mode, as opposed to permanent living, yes you will still party, but not every night, you may well eat out more than you did back in your home country, but you'll soon get fed up of it, and want home cooked grub.
My advice would be to decide, if you want apartment, townhouse, finca, no garden, garden, land, and then spend a few days first, just driving, or hire a taxi, and visit the towns and villages around the city, and see what facilities there are, before you even look at a property, the area surrounding Medellin is beautiful, but each town has it's own climate, this may be important to you.
Likewise visit the Supermarkets and shops, get a feel for prices. I made the mistake when I first came six years ago, of thinking that Supermarkets and Hypermarkets would be the cheapest places to shop, like it was in Europe, but I was wrong, you will often find that the corner shop or family supermarket is far cheaper (example: pack of 6 litres of milk, in the Main Supermarket 19.900 COP, in my local family supermarket it is 15.900 COP, and there is the personal touch, they all know me!).
Are you coming as a Retiree, or as a family? if the latter, look at private Schools, they are not cheap, but essential, as State schools offer an inferior education, due to lack of funding.
If you live here, and intend to comply with the laws of the land, then you have to pay into the Health System, and the standard of that varies according to the Service Provider, I have been lucky, I have had excellent healthcare whilst here, I pay into the EPS, and pay extra for a top up plan, which gives me direct access to Specialists, many Expats take out a Private Health Insurance Policy, that's fine if your budget allows, the fact is you still have to pay into the EPS, and they are clamping down on those that don't. Also budget for your annual taxes to DIAN, even if your home country has a double tax agreement with Colombia, you have to complete a declaration, and you are not able to do that yourself, you have to employ an Accountant, and that can be expensive in itself, I know many Expats, that don't make a declaration, and don't open a Colombian Bank Account, using ATM's to draw cash on a Home Country card, the Authorities have cottoned on to this ruse, and little by little they are catching the offenders, and to be honest, I am glad, the penalty just isn't worth it, and they know who is doing it, if you have a Cedula, then you are living here, and have to pay your way.
If you do your homework, you will find just what you want, but don't take shortcuts, you wouldn't get away with it back home, so dont try here.

Hi Phil! cheers! I'm from Argentina. If i'm not mistaken the total amount according to what Jose says should be: 350 rent + 50 in utilities + 50 of internet, cable and phone = 450. In what relates to food, considering it as an average: 3,50 for breakfast, 4,00 for lunch and 5,00 for dinner it'd be approximately 380 per month. So, total amount 450+380= u$s830. Me and my girlfriend are not of those who go every single day to have breakfast, lunch and dinner out, we are more of doing it at home, what would be the approximate amount of money needed to eat per month? Also, It'd be great hearing from you about all this aspects including the cost of renting, thank you very much!

Good content Marwa. Can you do the same for Bogota? What is a cheap and safe area of Bogota to rent for 12 months, that is not too far away from Chapinero/Zona Rosa/Candelaria?
