There is much deeper spiritual meaning to this song. Her cloth is stained meaning her bad deeds or entanglement or illusion (Maya) in this material world. Her father means the almighty where she was before taking birth on earth and will go after death. She is worried that how can she show her stained clothing to her father , not being able to hide it from him as he can see everything. The singer is reffering God's kingdom as her parent's home and this life on earth as her inlaw's home. The real home is there with her loving father, he says... I totally love this song of Manna Dey. Thanks for posting 🙏👍👏
It's in fact great that you've provided the actual meaning of this song here for those who can't understand, it was really disappointing to see the subtitles in this video 😭
This was my dad’s favourite song and Manna Dey was his favourite singer. He used to sing this song at every family functions and office concerts. People actually requested him to sing this song… It has been 12 years since he passed away. This video made me remember him deeply today.
This one is a gem. Never thought you guys would explore such content when you started. I think many youngsters in India are getting exposure to such classics because of you guys.
@@user-yh4uj2sx9x no that is not correct. If you consider technicality Manna Dey was far way ahead. Rafi's asset was his voice itself. Please read the history of how they were groomed upto their levels. None is inferior but if you consider Classical music alone, Manna Dey was far ahead of Rafi.
The song is a metaphor -- Literal meaning of the lyrics: There is a stain on my veil, which used to be pure and clean. I got this stain during my stay at my sasuraal (marital home), and now that I have to go back to my father's home, how will I face him with my tainted chunar (the cloth that covers the head of women)? While I was at my sasuraal, I forgot all the promises i made to my father about how I would stay pure. How will I face him now? Symbolic meaning -- The sasuraal (marital home) signifies this material world with all its flaws and corruptions. The father's home signifies god's heaven, where I made promises not to sin, but while I was in the material world, I forgot all those promises. Now I have to face god, how will I do it?
This song is a jewel on the top of indian film music's crown.... And manna dey is the legendary king of film music... Singing This song successfully is every singers dream.... Being a vocalist myself, i've tried singing it many times but never gone near perfections.... Tremendous vocal training, expertise and musical sense is needed to sing this even at 75% perfection....
Way back in 1980's I heard this song in tea stall radio. As Tamil I don't know Hindi but was mesmerised with this song spontaneously. what a wonderful song. Now I know to speak and understand Hindi. I am enjoying this much more..
You guys are exploring the real deals rather than the usual gloss and cheese. Just do a marathon on Manna Dey songs your minds will be blown and rewired to new realms.
The dancer is Padmini Priyadarshini nee Ramachandran, an accomplished classical dancer. She did cameos in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi films in the 1950s and1960s. ... She played the role of a dancer in all the films. She established a dance school and trained many.
This song is so emotional..... if it was filmed in todays era...people wud hv cried listening to lyrics.. Girl is saying she has lost her purity in this evil world.. now how to return home & face her father & look into his eyes..
Atlast I found someone who finds this emotional. Everytime I listen to this song, i get goosebumps and tears swell up. The purity and the depth.. ooooof
Here is a suggestion . Please hear/ watch/ react to “ Ajhu na aaye balma, sawan beeta Jaye” - a song composed in raga Sindhu- Bhairavi. From movie “saanjh aur savera” - an old 1964 Gurudutt movie. Song features Mehmood and Shubha Khotey. I am sure you will love it.
The subtitles did not do justice to the words. This song has Sufi connotations where the lover is just a metaphor for the worldly pleasures & the physical realms & the father’s home is what’s beyond & the veil is referred to the soul.
Subtitles messed up big time just when the lyrics explain the metaphor - what it really means - "Father" is the metaphor for God; "My Veil" is the metaphor for Soul; "My lover" is the metaphor for This World; "Stains" are the metaphor for Sins. So the lyrics mean to say - "My soul has been tarnished with all the sins that I have committed in this world by confusing it with Reality. How do I now return home (to God) and face God? How do I liberate myself now that I cannot return to Him?"
Fun fact: The composer of the song is “Roshan” who as you may have guessed, is the grandfather of Hritik Roshan. Hritik’s dad Rakesh Roshan was an actor, but not as popular as Hritik. Hritik’s uncle Rajesh Roshan is a composer. Speaking of Roshan, you should check out songs of 2 movies “Chitralekha” and “Taj Mahal”. Rajesh Roshan also composed some memorable songs like the ones from “Julie” and “Doosra Aadmi”.
Translation was very poor...it changed the meaning of whole song...they just literally translated this but the meaning of the song is very different..... Veil means the human soul which is tainted by all the evils of the world... Father is the god or the creator of this world.... Father's home means the God's home whereas lover's home means this world... The singer says that when my soul was with god, it was pure but after coming to this world it filled with all sort of evils or wrong doings... Now how will i face the Almighty after dying
I was happy for the subs . Without them the song loses its relevance. The last stanza explains- my garments are my soul and they have been stained by the illusions and attachments of this world. This world ( life) is my husband’s world but the other world belongs to my Father. Now with stains on my body and soul how can I face Him! This is a highly philosophical song.
It was Hindustani Classical music. Manna Dey was an amazing singer in this genre. Anyway, do react to 'Mahalaya by Birendra Krishna Bhadra'. Durga Puja is over, and Mahalaya is an important part of the festival. Please please please react to it.
Not sure how feasible this suggestion would be, but just putting it out there for funsies. Admittedly, your pronunciation of the Hindi words (in the title, and in general) wasn't completely off this time, but there are times where there is a significant difference from the right pronunciation. I think the main reason one could struggle to pronounce Hindi words is quite simply because they aren't reading it in the Hindi script (of course, same goes for any language, but especially for Indian languages, where there is an almost 100% correlation between alphabets and phonetics = it's read exactly how it's written)! If it's possible for y'all to learn the Hindi script = how to read letters and words (plenty of other awesome Indian scripts, but suggesting Hindi simply because that's what I speak and that's also what a non-significant proportion of your content revolves around), even if you don't understand what the words mean themselves, I think your pronunciation will be spot on everytime :) Also, the titles should have Hindi on them for you to be able to read it in Hindi haha.
I am a youngster from India learning Indian classical and Soft Music. Here in India, being able to sing "Laga Chunari Mein Daag" is regarded as a Milestone for any aspiring singer. It's considered as great as getting a Graduation degree in music 😂😂😂
YOU SHOULD MENTION THE LEGENDARY SINGER "MANNA DEY" BUT YOU DIDN'T !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't find its translation to do justice to what it actually means.... It's a pure conversation of a man lost in this sinful world with the Almighty God.
Fantastic vocals! And the lil comic ending - the dancer can’t keep with with his speedy vocals and falls at his feet..giving up the battle to keep up, after losing her ‘ghungroos’ (bells anklet) in the frenzy 😂 stop is what she is imploring I guess!!!

The translation is not proper. The meaning of the song is somewhat like... "i have become a sinner. How do i face God (Father) after i leave this world?"
🌸 Having known this song all my life because Manna Dey is just _zabardast_ and my family adores him, I never saw the film *Dil Hi To Hai* (1963) but I did see this clip before. I always thought the bearded guy was Shammi Kapoor and not Raj Kapoor, until now. 😅 Anyway, the beautiful actress talking at the start of the clip is fantastic and you should watch her film *Bandini* (1963) directed by Bimal Roy. 🍂 Raj Kapoor films that I would recommend are *Teesri Kasam* (Basu Bhattacharya, 1966) and his own directed *Mera Naam Joker* (1970). ☘️ Nutan and Raj Kapoor made a cute couple and I've seen them together once in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's *Anari* (1959), which I liked only in parts but as a complete movie did not work for me. 🌿 And then Manna Dey: he has so many songs that I love but some favourites include "Phir Kahin Koi Phool" from *Anubhav* (1971), "Yeh Raat Bheegi Bheegi" & "Aaja Sanam" from *Chori Chori* (1956), "Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen" from *Waqt* (1975), "Pyar Hua Iqrar Hua" from *Shree 420* (1955), "Mat Ro Mata" from *Bandini* (1963), and, well, so many more. 💟

Master Gopi kishan
Dance songs are missing
Manna Dey was the most classically accomplished of all Bollywood singers, followed by Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.
Rafi too

Rafi' s classic songs are underestimated.
This one is a pretty difficult song to sing for an amateur. Timeless classic.
Yea, idk how difficult it is but our music teacher used to sing it. I started loving it after a while too.

Great classical song. Love watching Rick enjoying the music and dance!! 👍
The Greatest Classic song ever... All time favorite.. Love from Pakistan 💖
It was amazing how legend Manna Dey sang this difficult classical number effortlessly at age 90 plus at a concert.
What lung power and breath control!
Because of you guys, we are revisiting our History. Can't thank you enough. ❤️
been recommending this feom a long time.. thank u... ❤️❤️
Watch "Teesri Kasam". You guys will definitely love it.

"कोरी चुनरिया आत्मा मोरी, मैल है मायाजाल।

You need to react more to Manna Day the maestro who is the vocal of this song. His Bengali songs are also great
Absolutely. If only non-Bengalis knew what legendary stuff Manna Dey has in his Bengali library.
You guys are exploring the real deals rather than the usual gloss and cheese. Just do a marathon on Manna Dey songs your minds will be blown and rewired to new realms.
If u wanna see Raj Kapoor movie, I wud recommend 'Barsaat' 1949
You guys are hitting the right notes and right songs. Keep it up 👍

Is she is the mother of Sudha ?
Wonderful old song old is gold.
Do Bigha Jameen : If you want to see great acting. Balraj Sahni's best performance.
Manna dey.. Salute to the legend
It was totally unexpected to see you guys reacting to this. Your suggestion-maneger deserves a hike in salary. 😁😁

The portion which Rick you liked, are the "bols" of the rhythm, or the vocal articulations of the rhythm being played on percussions.
Please please do react more old Bollywood classic songs. They are gems.
Excellent song and dance really enjoyed

Subtitles were not perfect but I am glad they were there. E.g. aatma was subtitled as sky (may be they thought it was aasma).
The subtitles did not do justice to the words. This song has Sufi connotations where the lover is just a metaphor for the worldly pleasures & the physical realms & the father’s home is what’s beyond & the veil is referred to the soul.
Shree 420: best Raj Kapoor movie . I think you guys should watch that ASAP.
Raj kapoor was so at point 🤩
Good choice of video today..

One of my favourite songs
Manna Dey was such a gem... His singing was unparalleled... Perhaps the only singer with classical singing training
