React to “yaara silli silli” song by lata Mangeshkar
Raj Kapoor films always had a socialistic message. He is a poor guy running after money in any way he could. While doing that he leaves behind the people who love him, gets hooked to a heartless rich woman.. in this song he comes back to his roots. The girl sitting under the lamppost is the teacher who loves him, the old woman is the one who treated him like her own son, this whole community had taken place of his family whom he had spurned in his quest for instant riches.
Apt description. Thank you
Thanks for the summary! Makes me want to watch the movie!
Socialism is shit anyway
So satisfied with your description. I like Rajkapoor and his films so much. Thank you.
He doesn't love the rich woman. She is a gambler and they both con people.
This song brings back so many memories. Sunday mornings waking up to Rangoli on DD.
Ahhhhhh! Those good old days where we only had DoorDarshan to rely on....!!!!!
Those days of
Rangoli,
Ramayan,
Malgudi Days,
Hum Log,
Mahabharat,
Dekh Bhai Dekh,
Bharat Ek Khoj,
Byomkesh Bakshi,
Chanakya,
Tu Tu Mein Mein,
......
And so many great shows of the 80’s and 90’s...!!!
Makes me so nostalgic! My childhood was indeed precious and much more simpler and care-free! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
By the way , rangoli is still on Vividh bharti channel, in case you are missing it

Yeah, Mee too. Rangoli..., Ramayan, stone boy, potli baba kahani, Tom & Jerry my favourite shows in Sunday's.
Go to Russia and former Soviet states and you'll realise the impact of Raj Kapoor there. He is huge. The stardom is unparalleled and unfathomable.
Oh yes! Even in Iraq and Ghana! I have colleagues who are from Iraq, Ghana and Russia. They sing his songs all the time when they see me! 😆
Even in Israel
Lol 420 means something completely different in India. It is used to describe someone who is a cheat or a con artist - derived from Section 420 of the penal code - it details the punishment for the offense of cheating.
i didn't know that's where he expression came from
@@r.h.6249 yeah. Same. I didn't know where that expression came from.
Looking for this comment! 👍🏼
Yes, the name Sri 420 is derived from IPC Section 420- applied for crime of cheating, forgery. I think in other countries also the same section is applicable for such a crime because our constitution, IPC, CRPC are designed on basis of British, French and some other countries' similar documents. USA's laws are also designed on similar basis....... So these criminal laws are similar all over the world so that people know them and refrain from any such crime even on a foreign land.
Whole Russia was crazy for this actor, he had a huge fan following in Russia, most of older generation people still know him.
Because most of his films gave a great social(socialist) message and reflected the problems of the poor and the exploitation by the rich
And his films tell and make us think about the social justice
Trivia on Mr. Raj Kapoor: he had a huge fan following in Russia apart from India of course. Most fans in Russia thought Mr. Kapoor sang all his songs. They could not believe Mr. Mukesh, a famous playback singer in the 50s was Mr Kapoor s voice in all his songs.
And this sung by rafi sahab
@@bazfan1809 but Rajkapoor has mukesh voice in this song too.so this song is sung by Md.Rafi and Mukesh.
@@kamaltoor4953 yaa justified
BTW, in all of the USSR as well as in Turkey where Raj Kapoor and his works are still a craze. They do not know Modi but, of course Raj Kapoor.
Except for some songs
The sentence "Ramayya Vasthavayya" Which means "O dear wouldn't you return? " is from telugu language, the director liked that in telugu so they kept it same wouthout changing it into hindi. So every line in song is in hindi language except the heading line "Ramayya Vasthavayya" ,It's in telugu .
It actually means Lord Rama, you will come.In telugu sometimes we call Lord Rama as Ramayya
A lot of construction workers those days were from Telugu states. Also Shankar was from Hyderabad. When the song was not ryhing they added this it seems
There were many telugu migrant labourers at that time in bombay in the slums
Thrilled to know the fact ! So, happy I m !
The lady who was singing at the end is Nargis, Sanjay Dutt's mother.
Raj kapoor is the Grandfather of Ranbir kapoor
Raj Kapoor's full name is Ranbir Raj Kapoor. The younger Ranbir is named after his grandfather.
Raj is the father of Rishi, Randhir and Rajeev. Grandfather of Ranbir, Karisma and Kareena. Raj Kapoor's father Prithviraj Kapoor played Akbar in Mughal e Azam.
You'll have to keep repeating that for another year but may not make any difference since it has already been mentioned numerous times and has not sunk in. They have really started to live up to the name of the channel, and not in a fun way.
@@ant5630 To be honest, they have really started ignoring the comments now. Earlier, Rick used to reply in the comments and Korbin used to regularly heart some of the comments. Now it doesn't happen I think mostly because people have been a lot rude to them lately. In movie reviews or in other videos where they tend to make some mistakes. Maybe that's why they're not too interested now. That's just my thoughts.
@@whitewalker608 I guess it's their choice to handle rudeness this way. But this is what they seem to be doing full time, it's their work. You can choose to disconnect and not take the people engaging with videos into consideration, but that's not going to work well in the long run. I mean it's the internet, of course some people are going to disagree or be rude. If someone is harassing or abusive, block and move on. But they seem to be choosing to go the route of just take the ad revenue from videos and Patreon income, engage only with the clique of people who pay or follow closely on social media and ignore the rest because they don't matter. Oh well.
@@ant5630 I totally agree!!

Nargis is in the last part. The lady in the party is Florence Nadira Ezekiel. She was born in Iraq, Baghdad and belonged to the Iraqi Jewish migrants in India.
Oh man....he is not any Kapoor...he is 'THE' Kapoor...almost half of the Hindi Film Industry belongs to his progeny in some way!!
This song tittle alone is derived from an old telugu folk song. Kudos 👍 to makers for respecting the original tune.
లెస్స పలికితివి సోదరా....👌👍
According to wiki...The story goes, the Telugu dubbed version of the film Aah, 1953 was so well received that Raj Kapoor was elated and showed his gratitude for Telugu audiences by having a song in the film beginning with these lines.
@@reddy007ism thanks for this fact... great work...
Raj kapoor was star in Soviet Union. His films were as popular in Russia as they were in India. That's why his old film music has a hint of Russia. India and Russia were fast frends at that time ( today too) China was also in the same boat until the back stabbing of 1962.
50s Bollywood cinema is really unparalleled in its story,songs,music,cinematograhy,acting..everything.....i really love the films of this era...it was so freaking good....compared to what came later this era remains a masterpiece...
Mukesh also needs to be recognized for this song. He was THE voice for Raj Kapoor (almost song all songs for him) and is just as legendary as Md. Rafi and Kishore Kumar.
To Rick :
- That lady dancer (Nadira) at the start is perhaps the only Indian Jewish who made it big in films.
- 420 is not MJ in this context, it loosely translates to con artist here.
How is 420 related to Michael Jackson?

Edit- Aw c'mon guys! It's soo heartbreaking when u don't recognize the people in the video despite seeing them so many times 😕😕. Didn't u guys recognize Nargis from Mother India? And the entire family tree of Raj Kapoor has been drawn out in the comments several times... I can feel the disappointment of every golden era fan 😔 **sigh**
Lol the smell of disappointment is strong today. But at least it's predictable now. These days, I expect to be disappointed :)
You didn't get the vibe of this song. It is about materialistic western culture and spiritual indian culture. The hero belongs to the village but somehow he got success and left his village(basti) and went with industrialist, upper class people. There were lights, dances performed by attractive ladies, money, fame, power etc. but the soulfulness was missing. He didn't felt love, simplicity, care for each other there. Hence when he left from there, he felt a sense of renunciation from that material environment, he was fed up. Whereas he felt lovely connection at village(basti). He felt soulful connection. Hence the song is about "won't you return?", it is actually talking about his return and his regret that he left at first place in attraction of money, but felt no love there, but materlism, hence a sudden renunciation caused him to return to his roots.
PS : westners have difficulty understanding renunciation, I have seen it. People cry over this song as if some loved one who left, realises his mistake and comes back. Subah ka bhula sham ko ghar aa jaye to use bhula nhi kehte.
Very well articulated...
Raj Kapoor and Nargis were in a relationship for many years while he was married. He wud never leave his wife. In 1956 Nargis refused to work with him again and stopped the relationship and went to do 'Mother India' and her love story with Suni Dutt began while filming during the film and the rest was history. Even in his film 'Mera Naam Joker' my favourite of Raj Kapoor he played a part of Shree 420 scenes in a song called. 'Kehta hai joker' 1968. He never wanted the relationship to end, but she had to move on ..
damn that range of rafi saheb..could have easily touched F# with ease..
Isnt the male singer mukesh?
@@alkaverma7133 yes the playback for Raj Kapoor was Mukesh..but the play back for street guy singing was rafi..
Raj Kapoor movies were well received in Telugu as well during that time (ofc dubbed versions).
Raj Kapoor was happy about it and used the phrase “Ramayya Vasthavayya” from a Telugu folk song about lord Rama. The phrase translates to lord ram would you come.
That’s what I’m thinking there is Telugu phrase in it. May be he imitated NTR in facial expressions.
Shankar jaikishan the music directors gave wonderful songs to Hindi and one telugu film NTR starred Jeevitha chakram . Shankar's father settled in Andhrapradesh and shankar spent his childhood in Hyderabad.Ramayya vastavayya line was his choice and Rajkapoor accepted it.The song was huge hit.
Finally!!! Someone pointing out that it is a Telugu phrase!!!
Yes Mohammed Rafi greatest singer love this song

Every time I hear "Ramaiyya Vastavaiyya, Maine Dil Tujhko Diya", I expect it to be followed by the lines "Saale ne waapas kiya"!!! That's what we sang in school!
You can also react to Dilka haal sune dilwala from this film.. Actually every song of this film is itself a classic
* Ichak daana bichak daana
* Mud mud ke naa dekh
* pyaar hua ikrar hua
* dil ka haal sune dilwaala..
Oh gosh, this unlocked a memory... I don't know if you'll read this, but, when Raj Kapoor walked out of the party and the male voice started singing (playback singer Mohammad Rafi), it reminded me of a 1980s UK show called 'Movie Mahal' - I think episodes are available on UA-cam! I watched it as a child because it subbed the songs and explained who the people were and a little of the history of the music. Do check it out!
Incidentally, the hero Raj Kapoor has the playback singer Mukesh. The two were like one face and voice for decades. True magic.
You are recently digging old gold's and I m enjoying it✌️✌️✌️♥️
Song is sung by legendary Lata Mangeshkar. Male lead and Director of the movie is legendary Raj Kapoor, grandfather of Ranbeer Kapoor. Female lead is Nargis, mother of Sanjay Dutt.
Prithviraj (Mugal E Azzam) father of Raj (Shammi and Shashi are brothers) Father of Rishi Father of Ranbir. Kareena and Karisma are Raj 's Grandaughters by Randhir (Rishi's Brother) Soon you will have it all memorized!
Guys its terrible that you don't understand the greatness of this song. Don't just go by the word in the lyrics, understand the metaphor of each words in that lyrics. This song has great depth and meaning. This song is written by the great writer Shailendra .
Unfortunately, predictably terrible these days :(
And yet instead of trying to understand they waste half of their time commenting about curt wheeling.
I think once they see the full movie, they will have a deeper understanding of the meaning of the beautiful lyrics. Remember, they are not used to these kinds of old meaningful Indian songs and films. And also they do not speak the language which makes it difficult to understand at a deeper level when it is translated from another perspective. 🙂
This is MUST WATCH CLASSIC
When the elders in the family play antakshri, this song is within the first 5 to 10 songs in the game.
This song is a must in every DHOLKI or MEHENDI function here in Pakistan. What pure lyrics and melody.
I recommend you to watch this movie.. Raj Kapoor(popularly known as the showman of Indian cinema) had a major following not only in India but also many abroad countries like Russia! You can see many of his movies like Aawara, Mera naam Joker and many more all are masterpieces..
I also want you to explore many other movies of those time they had fantastic story, music, dance everything was mesmerizing
All time favourite song ....thanks for reacting to this one❤️❤️❤️
The love interest of raj kapoor in this song is the famous actress of her time ......Nargis , mother of Sanjay Dutt . Raj kapoor is Ranveer kappor’s paternal grandfather.
Sahib Bibi aur ghulam is what you should be watching and then reviewing ...... this movie stars the legendary actress Meena Kumari, Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman ! A great classic, winning several awards in its time and has some beautiful music as well .

This might be slightly controversial, given how much people seem to enjoy this spectacle. But I will be straightforward and say it, there are somethings that just don’t translate and travel. This is not “Bollywood party song”, these are songs and cinema that made India a nation, gave it it’s veryethos. This is not Bollywood, Hell the term Bollywood did not exist then, this is an exercise in Nation Building. These are movies made right after India became Independent.
To be honest, you need to understand basics in India music to understand the basic sorrow in the tune. While that people are dancing, it is all Melancholia, and you don’t need the lyrics to understand it. This is a masterclass in Indian music, ethos, culture everything.
Raj Kapoor is a giant, any ‘Cinema” lover would know when to shutup and throw their assumptions about the craft and the technicalities out and just feel.
I am personally fed up, with seeing such thing being reviewed. The palette is just not there.
Not at all controversial, all completely true. But unfortunately this comment is too lovely, knowledgeable and insightful to be understood by 90% of people here or Indians in general today, let alone american reactors. Not that they are bothering to read or understand anyways :)
But thanks for chiming in, it's good to know at least some people know and understand this. There have been a handful of commenters in the videos who have tried to give deeper insights like this over months. But deaf ears and all that!
Guys , why do you forget these things like Raj Kapoor is father of Rishi Kapoor and grandfather of Ranbir Kapoor , just few videos back you guys forgot who Rishi Kapoor is🤷♂️
Chill. They are just earning money from Indian contents. Nothing else
The songs from that era, it was all in lyrics.. lyrics were the soul of any song and everything had a deep meaning.. it made you think..
7:00 thats sanjay Dutt's mother..
We were in down town L.A. in 2002 . One shop owner asked us , if we knew Raj Kapoor. When we said we shared the same neighborhood . He said , he was in Israel during his growing up days and never missed movies Raj Kapoor made ! Somebody , who does not speak Hindi recalled after almost five decades . This is what the one and only showman of Hindi movies has been and remain so forever ! Would strongly recommend to all who are yet to enjoy , please do it now. There has been nothing like his movies !
The film catapulted Raj Kapoor to another level of film making. Both Awara and Sree 420 were appreciated and recognized across Russia and Europe, winning international acclaim. One can only hope that every generation makes an effort to watch this film
My father says, Raj Kapoor was loved in Russia
Absolutely watch it... it was one of the very first "globally" acclaimed Indian films.. along with Awara. Both, incidentally, directed by Raj Kapoor.
This film and this song is one of the master piece by Raj Kapoor. The film speaks volumes about poverty and exploitation in India but gives it a global language. You must watch this film. This is the film what made Raj Kapoor what he was. A great showman. If possible you should watch all the Raj Kapoor movies.
It wud have been great if subbers can write the name of the actors whenever they are shown in song atleast once . Like Sanjay Dutts mother or Ranbir Kapoors Grand father
Song by all legends of bollywood...Lata...Rafi...Raj kapoor..Nargis
He is the grandad Kapoor for Ranbir Kapoor, Karishma kapoor, Kareena Kapoor. He the one who stabilized Kapoors as legit royalty in the world of cinema. He is the father of rishi kapoor. He directed movies that touched social topics and was considered one of the best directions. He has received award for lifetime achievement. He touched on social topics such as urbanization at the cost of the poor, widow remarriage, and stigma. He was considered visionary director and a good actor. He had a knack for using music in his movies in amazing style. Although his father was in the movies, nobody could meet the level of competence, technique and fame he achieved in his lifetime. He was loved across Russia (old soviet union) for his movies that had a pro-people message. His songs were sung in Soviet-era
Full of emotions full of feeling what a song it was
Best Indian film ever. Highly recommended. Stands up very well. Especially since the occupy movement. Well ahead of its time
Instead of taking feel of such a meldious song, dont know why you guys keep on laughing..This is not only song but our best of Golden era. You need to read background of the song before reacting. My geniun n friendly advice.
I feel disappointed too. I think its easy for them to relate to surprising or funny or something that pumps up the adrenaline but not plain sounding songs ...plain to the Western world.
@I'm Not Suhas
Why do you have to explain for them and why do you think your explanation is correct. Why can’t somebody just express how they feel without “know it all’s” like you interfering.

The film is definitely worth watching , I think it’s safe too say this is the most popular film of the 1950s in India , and the highlight of raj Kapoors career , raj kapoor is widely regarded as one of if not the greatest showman of India’s classical era , the biggest film of the 1960s was Guide which ft Dev Anand and Waheeda Rahman , and Sholay ofc was the 1970s film that dominated
My fav part of this song is from 6:40 to 7:00, how the song reaches from Raj Kapoor to Nargis, with different people singing it and carrying it forward to Nargis. You should definitely watch Shree 420, Chori Chori, Jagte Raho, Awara, and many more such gems by Raj Kapoor.

"Ramiah Vastaviayya" or "రామయ్య వస్తవయ్యా" Song is from Raj Kapoor’s “Awara” film. It is a matter of surprise how can Telugu words have become beginning (పల్లవి ) of a Hindi song. There’s a story behind it. When RK started making of this film,”Awara”, the music team used to go to Khandala to make songs. During such trips to Khandala by all the four (Shanker,Jaikishan, Shailendra and Hazrat Jaipuri ) they, used to stop at a roadside hotel for chai and snacks etc. There was working, a Telugu person called “Ramaiah”. Shanker used to talk to him in Telugu and give order to him only, not to anyone else. Shanker knows Telugu very well as he was born and lived in Hyderabad ,though they are originally from UP. On such one visit to hotel, Shanker called Ramaiah to take the order. Ramaiah signalled him to wait as he was busy with some other customers. As there was some delay in his coming, Shanker became little impatient and started humming “Ramaiah Vastavayya” Ramaiah Vastavaiayya” calling Ramaiah to come quickly. To his words Jaikishan started making tabla sounds on the serving table. This went on for a while, Hasrat got bored by this repetition snd said to Shanker “only this much, nothing more? ”.then Shaiedra immediately added “ mainey dil tujhko Diya “ meaning "I have given my heart to you". When both lines sung together, they thought this could be a song, if continued further. After some time Ramaiah came, took the order and served. These lines and tune was told to RK, he was very impressed and accepted . He created a situation and lyrics were written keeping these lines intact. They wanted to replace “Ramaiah Vastavayya “line with some Hindi words, but no suitable line was found and no one was happy replacing it. So, they retained original Telugu words, even though Hindi audiences did not understand its meaning. This song was super hit and considered as one of the best songs in the Hindi film music.
