Avalanche caught CLOSE-UP by FPV drone - Long range mountain surfing in 4k

- We were out for a day of long range mountain surfing in British Columbia on Vancouver Island with our long range drones (that we build ourselves), hoping to get some nice cinematic footage. There was a "severe avalanche warning" a couple of days prior, but things seemed to have calmed down. Just when were were getting ready to leave, I looked up and saw a huge avalanche coming down the mountain right in front of us! I scrambled to get a battery on my long range FPV drone, fumbled with my GoPro, and booked it out towards the mountain as fast as I possibly could. I got there just in time to see an absolutely scary amount of snow from an avalanche hitting the bottom of the mountain. What looks like water in this video is actually a huge amount of snow, with some chuncks as big as my truck.
Since I had the goggles on, I couldn't see what was goin on around me, and I was pretty paranoid about the avalanche coming down the mountain, through the valley and up the other side where we were sitting, all without me knowing. I was also worried that the road would get obliterated and we'd be stuck way out in the back country. Luckily, it wasn't even close.
* I'm trying to get a documentary made about drone mountain surfing - If you can help in some way, please contact me! *

No click bait. No 20 minutes of blathering to setup anything. This is high quality content and should be the benchmark. Fantastic!
Agreed! This is genuine and amazing.
In my opinion, this has to be the absolute gold standard for professional drone flying and videography. Mesmerising. Thankyou so much for giving us that visual experience. Incredible. Unforgettable.
Thank you so much !
No words cause you said it all!
Well put. Indeed!
That footage is unbelievable and I can’t believe how range that drone has😳
SLAVA UKRAINE!
@@art1muz13 America First. no more brother wars
very range
@@porkyswelding People like you called for the illegitimate war in Iraq, and then when there's a country who needs our help, being illegally invaded by a geo-political adversary, it's 'america first, no more wars'. Fucking hypocrite.
@@art1muz13fuck Ukraine
A mile long river of snow, running down to become a snow waterfall. Scored to the correct music. And a fluid master. Priceless.
This HAS TO BE the BEST footage of an avalanche ever captured. Absolutely incredible!
why does it have to be?
Nice try; it's a 'figure of speech'.
@@-FreudiansLip Some are challenged!

You're lonely, huh. You're really seeking attention, huh. Cute.
I feel like this deserves some sort of award. Amazing.
I wish! But thank you :)
No Kidding! Amazing footage
I second that! Your piloting skills are impressive!
I agree
@@MactacFPV It's the first time I've ever seen a landslide like this.. birds eye over the top following to source.. top.. how far is that range you have ? You went pretty far and high ! 😮
This is by far the best avalanche ever caught on drone, cam. EVER🙌🏻😎
Fantastic footage and flying skills. Never imagined that the start of the avalanche would be soo far up the mountain.
I expect that it's caused by just the right gust wind. Butterfly effect in action, as it were.
I wonder if his drone could cause one...
My 80 year old mother is sitting beside me watching this and she said now I know what it feels like to ski downhill! She feels like she was wearing a VR headset! Thank you for giving her that experience! Awesome video and unbelievably accurate timing and navigation!!! Mind blowing!
i'm 68 & loving it. i raised my arms coming down the hill. i always wished i could fly when i was a kid. this was awesome.
Now that your mom likes skiing, you should show her this: ua-cam.com/video/fbqHK8i-HdA/v-deo.html and this: ua-cam.com/video/R1NagZN2kjY/v-deo.html
When actual skiing videos and actual VR exists 🤦♀️
59 loving it too!
This is National Geographic level work man. So well done and amazing timing. I hope this helps to elevate your drone career.
Thank you SO much, that's very nice :)
Yeah I agree!
@@ecowahm :) much appreciated!
Yea, this is easily #1 this year. Nurk and the gang are going to have to step up to beat this. Just wow. You need to copy write dude.
Awesome!
You should sell them that film. It will be a real gem in the National Geographic videos collection!
The whole experience was captivating. Mad respect to your drone flying skills, your videography skills and the combination of both. Even Hollywood has lost its touch with such skills. I wanna see these guys in the next Mission Impossible movie
Yeah, everything in Hollywood is fake now.
WOWOWOWOW I don't know what else to say. That is the BEST footage I've ever seen short of being on an IMAX Screen.
I'm not joking, this should win some type of an award.
I'm still sitting here stunned, because nothing on YT comes even close to this. Congratulations to you both.
Timing is one thing but the way you fly upwards along the avalanche path was so cool. I was hoping you would fly downwards at one stage…. And you did! Great job really
Thank you :)
Came here to say the same thing. Quite an exhilarating ride! 👍🏻
Excellent flying and sound fx, people don’t truly appreciate how difficult it is to fly something like this, you don’t get a reshoot! Excellent story telling as well!
Thank you very much - it's so true, I appreciate you pointing this out. It's not easy :)
I was amazed at the technology. To be able to remain in real-time video feed with the drone is amazing and then be able to control the drone almost instantly.
@@oldmech619 3 years ago I scored on clearance at Target the original DJI Mavic Pro 4K drone and it’s little brother the DJI Spark, for $425 and $199 which was a steal. Both of them absolutely blew my mind, it is one of the best purchases of my life and one of few that truly “does everything they said it does”. It is completely mind blowing to fly 1-3 miles away completely out of sight and be watching a nice big HD video feed on my iPad, and be able to press 1 button and hands free these things will fly themselves home and land on their takeoff point with accuracy the size of a license plate. Exactly like a SpaceX rocket booster returning to its pad.
And my drones are several generations old (not that they’ve had any major evolutions since then, just incrementally longer range, flying time, and video bitrate.)
If you ever thought about getting one, do it! You don’t have to drop 2 Grand on the latest model. Tons of used kits out there. Also my biggest fear was always to crash and lose my investment. Well I can say now you have to be foolish/reckless to do that. These drones are Damn reliable as long as you follow the rules of flying responsibly and stop yourself from getting carried away taking risks.
@@Syclone0044 He ain't flyin no DJI dude. He's flyin a long range racing drone. Get ya self a racing drone and some FPV goggles. Shits on a DJI and an ipad.
It was some impressive flying skills, especially given how windy it was up there. I was also amazed by the range on that drone.
Absolutely astounding. No wonder avalanches are so deadly having such power and speed. Your drone skills are amazing. Gave me an experience I wouldn't have seen for myself. Thanks for posting.
It's one of the greatest drones videos I've seen. The rumble when listening with headphones is a definite testimony of how powerful that avalanche was. Well done.
The sound/ rumble/ etc is all done in the edit afterwards (it's not real). The only true sounds recorded, is the first couple of seconds and the last minute.
Lol
If the audio was real you would mostly hear the drone's noice
DAMN IMPRESSIVE!
Imagine watching this footage on an IMAX or, even better, OMNIMAX screen and hearing/feeling the rumble of the avalance as the drone passes over.
My hat's off to you, good sir!
Thank you so much! Oh man, that would be amazing !
@@MactacFPV It would be so cool if you could drop a remote mic so that there's more real upclose sound somehow, but that's probably Hollywood budget stuff
@@xWood4000
How about mic on mini-drone controlled by master drone like the micromachines from the 80s but automated.
@@MactacFPV is the sound added in editing? I'm curious how there was sound but not of the drone itself - I thought most of them didn't even have mics. great footage though, I'd be afraid I'd accidentally crash it up there and never be able to get it back!
@@jlt131 The sound is picked up by the GoPro on the drone, however all it picks up is the sound of the propellers (because it's about an inch away!). I have recordings of avalanches up close, and used those for the sound, added in post. I'm always afraid of crashing too! Especially when flying close to the ground - if you get a rock between you and the drone, it loses signal and you can easily lose the drone.
Best drone video I have ever seen. Just amazing how you navigated up the ravine. I kept wondering how high you would make it and to see you made it to the top and back down. Wow. The piloting was amazing. At Some points it seemed you were only a foot or two off the ground. The music was perfect too. I don't know how this can be copyrighted but it should be up for the "Academy Awards" of all drones
Hahah, well thank you SO much for all your kind words (and for watching the video!) There were actually places where I was just a few inches off the ground while crawling up the rock. It freaked me out a bit :)
If I ever saw national geographic do this, I would actually read/watch it. This is next level.
agree, never seen something so spectacular and storytelling of a nature phenomen that you dont see everyday and mostly you want to be far away when it happens.
Check out falconradFPV too he has some pretty epic flights sans the avalanche!
@@nathanp3366 Haha, yes we know each other.
Wow, that UAV distance is absolutely amazing!!!
you can buy a drone for like 1500$ that has 20 KM range, and in this video i bet wasnt more than 4-5 KM or something, 2 to the mountain and then 3 up, but amazing video indeed ! amazing
I had to look away several times.
I'm afraid of heights and my stomach was doing loops. Incredible footage. The power of nature can be terrifying.
Gorgeous. I'm especially applauding how you kept your head while following a luscious dipping and cornering path. I'd have lost the drone and lost my sense of self for sure. Anyone can put a drone in the air. What you did took solid experience, control, and poetic soul. So fantastic.
Thank you so very much, I really appreciate the kind words :)
Childlike Wonder. For a mountaineer to see the magnitude of this ascent and understand the scale and the power of this mountain in a matter of seconds is humbling. And pure magic. Thank you for sharing.
Wow yes, “magnitude of this ascent” yes that absolutely says it, well said. I felt the same
Way, what an epic ascent, especially with the snow and ice running like a river downhill. Amazing
Was trying to see if someone will point this out...the sheer ammount of ascent here, rock and cliffs, ice snow...tehnical parts...it has 100 different layers of everything that make 1 amazing ascent.
Where was this shot? 🤔
That was stunning; easily one of the best UA-cam videos out there. As captivating as the GoPro Wingsuit proximity flying without the constant near death experience!
The power and beauty of mother nature never fails to amaze. You are a gold metal pilot. Best drone footage I have ever seen.
WOW!!....That was absolutely breathtaking. Great range on the FPV too! The video quality is very good and your piloting is Epic. Footage definitely deserves some kind of award! Good Job!!
That was amazing, something few will ever see in their lifetimes. Thank you!
Yes, I was incredibly lucky to be in the right place at the right time. Definitely once in a lifetime! Thanks
And if you do see it up close and in person, it would likely be the one and the last time in your lifetime.
@@YosemiteOnMyMind that was awesome.
Most of the people who saw something like this are dead now. Scary stuff.
It’s amazing that the drone even plays its own orchestral beat music . I thought only humans plugged into sound everywhere they went, but drones do it too.
Well done. The added rumbling sound affect really added to the piece. You can feel the raw power of the avalanche.
WOW!!!!! Unbelievable once in a lifetime timing and expert flying precision!!!
Hey thanks for the kind words !
this is the best capture of an avalanche I have ever seen and likely if not the best avalanche capture ever. in that moment the middle of that mountain was one of the most inhospitable places on earth, and we were able to see it from 10 feet away. this is the equivalent to flying inside a volcano at the beginning of an eruption. i have a feeling you've started something huge.
Thats also the biggest and longest avalanche I've ever seen
Everyone appreciated everything about this video... So I would just say:What a range dude... Superb.
This is perhaps one of the finest long distance high detail a definition drone flights that I have ever seen piloted before. I think this is top level work and you should be congratulated.
What an unique angle to such a massive phenomenon. I hope some avalanche expert sees this video and spots something that we didn't know about before.
I've already had messages from fluid dynamics people and a ton of climbers. It was so mesmerizing that I kept forgetting to concentrate on not crashing :)
Hands down the best long range FPV video I’ve ever seen! Great flying and capture!
Wow, that’s just AMAZINGLY Terrific. A river of snow; hands down one heck of a drone trip and maybe one UNMATCHED! And the downhill slide - epic! Spectacular!
This has to be the absolute best video I’ve seen on this subject. The technical quality off the charts. Outstanding
Once in a lifetime chance to capture an avalanche! Great flying!
Yep, I got so lucky! thanks
I don't normally watch this stuff, in fact I find it boring but, I have to say if there's ever a backhanded compliment that I can pay, this is it, because this is the best footage and handling of a drone I have seen, ever. Totally impressed!!! Just amazing
Drones have changed everything about how we are able to see the hard to reach areas of the world! This is fantastic footage!
Thank you for something that I would never get to see in my lifetime. This was an amazing video.
Wow, incredible skills from the drone pilot capturing the avalanche at the perfect moment! The precision and timing are truly impressive.
Thank you so much for the kind words :)
This is perfection, and I don't see a single edit. I don't think anyone has captured an avalanche in such perfect conditions, so well, ever. Great work, this is going to get millions of views and deserves them!
Oh man, that is so incredibly nice - thank you :) Correct, no edits!
This is phenomenal! Extremely well done. The music, the pace, everything. Thanks for sharing.
An utterly amazing 7 minutes of pure, natural, powerful and mesmerising awe. What a lucky chance, and amazing videography. Well done!
And the Oscar goes to... I hope this gets 30 million views and earns you a ton of money. You certainly deserve it.
Stunning video! I called my wife in to watch it and she was surprised at how far and high you managed to go. Kudos to your drone making skills as well as your flying! Sir David Attenborough would be impressed, I'm sure! Nailed it with your mixing of drone and avalanche sounds and music and back again! Best dronage I've ever seen.
one in a million footage. Right place + right moment + good pilot with quad = THIS.
Some extraordinary drone flying skills. I’ve flown drones for close to 10 years now so I know what it takes! Kodos for some awesome videography as well. 🙏
Wow. Everything about your video was incredible. From the performance of that drone to your filmography. Very impressive. I’m nominating this for an award.
Wow! Educational too. As someone who goes in the backcountry to ski I appreciate you showing parts of snow dynamics I could never see.
You have proved the true marvels and timing of having a drone in the right place and time, to deliver spectacular rare avalanche footage!
I'm in absolute Awe! What are the range on these things? I couldn't believe that you went ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP OF THE FRICKEN MOUNTAIN!! I kept waiting for you to stop and turn around but it's clear your are a very skilled drone pilot and you know what your limits are. Thank you for the beautiful video. Can't wait to see the next one and the next one and so on.
@@steiner554 - I'm not sure what he's flying, but the farthest I ever took one of my DJI drones was a bit over 3 miles out over flat ground. I gained quite a bit of extra range by installing little plastic dishes over the antenna with foil on them. That made the antenna more directional than omnidirectional, but gave them more power in that direction. I'd imagine with actual custom equipment one could go quite a bit farther, though battery life would become an issue. At 3 miles out and back with minimal wind I still only had about 20% battery life left.
Absolutely fantastic capture. This is a perfect example of how useful a drone is. Thank you for sharing. 👏🏿👏🏿👍🏿👊🏿🤗
Thank you!
Loved every second of that video. There were times were you were getting low, had a little panic at how close it was to hitting the snow. Great piloting
Hahah, thanks a lot. I love flying just a few inches off the ground when I'm not freaking out from adrenaline :)
That was gripping... Deserves an oscar nomination for best short film.
Incredible, Except me and your 1.2. million other viewers no one in history has yet seen this. Thanks its brilliant. I hope billions get to experience a part of the amazing world we live in that was never visible before. A perfect soundtrack as well.
Youre one hell of a drone pilot. Awesome
Awwww... shucks. Thank you :)
That was some super gnarly footage. I absolutely loved it. This is the kind of things drones are made for.🙏💯🙌😁✅
Stunning, in every sense of the word...this could easily be in a top level BBC nature documentary, well done, fantastic flying, filming and editing

Incredible job ....
All those who already have pilot a drone can measure how difficult making such a footage is ! And it seems so easy.... the top of the art !
Congratulations🤗🤗🤗
Mind blowing. Such great timing capturing the incredible natural process of avalanching snow. Also, such a treat to get to such an intimate tour of the coastal Canada topography. Thanks for your outstanding (out sitting ;-) work !
Thanks for providing the really interesting back-story about this once-in-a-lifetime capture of an Avalanche.

You are a BIRD trapped in a human body. Your ability to maintain spatial awareness in both the micro and macro scale of that flight is remarkable. Excellent work.
This is absolutely fantastic. So accurately done. Beautiful stunning images. Well done you guys!
Without doubt one of the best drone videos I have ever seen.

wow. this is award winning on so many different levels. not that im a professional videographer, scientist, drone pilot or... anything, but if i expected to see a "winner at this-and-that" or "best video in such-and-such" it would be this, 100%

This is already better than anything Michael Bay has ever turned out. This really makes me want to include a FPV drone into the collection now!
Hahah thanks ... yes, do it !!!
Michael Bay would yank the camera every 0.7 seconds. Zoom in twice. Pan to the left and then back to the right. Make a jump cut 2.3 seconds ahead. Freeze frame for an instant. Again and again and again.
@@henryD9363 And let's not forget the explosions. My God, the never ending explosions...

OMG this is insane. This is without a doubt the best drone video I've ever seen. You do some ballsy stuff up there! I'd be terrified of some of those gaps. Amazing.
outstanding footage and flying skills, as a DJI pilot, I cannot get how hard it is to fly this way! Amazing range!
Are you a DJI FPV Pilot per chance? I have the Mavic Pro and Spark which obviously maintain level flight at all times unless you enable FPV mode but even then they travel along a horizontal axis of perfectly flat altitude. I have been extremely curious how different it feels to pilot one of these true FPV drones that is entirely untethered from gravity.
Mostly just impressed with your range and battery.
This is just fantastic. Magnificent. I LOVE drone vids. WOW WOW WOW...this is def one of the BEST vids I've seen! Well done..Hat's off!
This. Was. Spectacular. Thank you for bringing me up a mountain in Canada, a place I'd LOVE to visit because it's just beyond gorgeous. This was.... so amazing.
