ABBA Intermezzo No. 1 Bass Cover

- January last year I started playing the bass, at the age of 60. I borrowed my youngest son’s Yamaha bass and took lessons. Right from the start I promised myself that, if I could play a Really Difficult piece within a year, I would treat myself to my very own bass guitar. And so it happened.
The Really Difficult piece is, believe it or not, from ABBA. It was composed in 1975 by Benny Andersson, perhaps to demonstrate his virtuoso keyboard skills or to show that ABBA was not just another glam rock band. The track starts up calmly but after the intro it sounds like Bach on speed. It took me a year to keep up with the tempo but eventually I even managed to add some variations of my own.
My new bass is a Hagstrom Super Swede. A very beautiful instrument with a punchy attack and long sustain. It was partly designed by ABBA’s former and late bass player Rutger Gunnarsson. Playing an ABBA bass to an ABBA song feels quite special..
I realize this cover is far from perfect but I am quite proud that I made this progression in one year. I would like to thank my former bass teacher Michael Baumgarten for his hand-made transcription of the bass track. Thanks to my son John for lending me his bass and to my son Mats for setting up the JamVox software.

Nice job. I'm eyeballing one of those Hagstrom Super Swede basses. How do you like yours?
Hi Alex, I am enjoying my Hagstrom very much. It is not too heavy, yet it has got a heavy sound, but also clear and with lots of sustain. I would surely recommend it for playing pop and rock. Not so much for jazzy things, R&B and reggae. Besides that, it just looks really good and it is fun to own a bass guitar that is sort of a rarity. I play it now through a Blackstar Unity 500 combo and that turns out to be a great combination.
