MY HONEST TAKE: Is Ultimate General: American Revolution Worth It?

- Ultimate General: American Revolution is the next major title by Game-Labs, whose previous titles include UG Civil War and one of my favourites Ultimate Admiral: Age of Sail. American Revolution is years in the making and is essentially the definitive combination of all of their past developments in one game. Huge and beautiful land battles, fantastic tactical naval battles and of course all for the first time in the series on a new vibrant campaign map of North America.
Now I’ve personally been playing Ultimate General American Revolution since well before release. I’ve spent over 100 hours playing about 5 campaigns so I think I’ve got a lot of experience to make a thorough review. In this video I’ll be talking about whether American Revolution is worthy of being called a true competitor to Total War, whether it’s a challenging, replayable and Historical game and whether with all of that in mind if it’s worth buying for the standard price of $50.

The Ultimate General Series has come a LONG way, and now with American Revolution we finally have an actual campaign! Plenty of great stuff here and I have had a blast in my playthroughs so far. There are still lot's of improvements to be made & features/mechanics to be added in but overall I love it! What do you think? Let me know in the comments below!

@@Rex1987Ultimate Admiral Dreadnoughts is still a mess of unfinished features and bad AI. I think the fact that there isn't any competition to TW/Rule the Waves then Gamelabs makes many overly positive about Gamelabs games.
Give me the map of Europe and the South Amercias/India and we'll have a solid Empire II.

Though I gotta say its pretty cool to have some quality strategy games in the Americas lately, (as a bias american), since most games focus of on the euro-mediterranean-middle east theatre.
If we don't get the mega dream campaign game, I think it would be neat to go to Central and South America since those areas are very under represented compared to all the drama they had with their own revolutions and later conflicts

We still have another decade until Creative Assembly will finally give us Empire: Total War II, so i'm looking forward to this one.
So I beat what is available in 10, feverish playing, days. The game is in early access and more content is in development, so understand that when you decide to buy it.
The realtime element is amazing and I really enjoyed the game.
You can either pay full price now and support the developers or you can wait until black Friday and you will get the polished product at a mild discount later this year.

All the Native American people as you try to build your own Native nation and fend off the invading Nations on your land
In civil war, we had the time to manage each units because there was 4000 figther by units. It was fun to make strategic move on one side without worriing too much on the other side of the battle. There was no micro management.
I hope it will be the same, keep it simple the battle not like Total war where we need to check each units every 10 seconds.

There is, each regiment needs a leader and weapons. But it will be less focused since you are literally focusing at an entire theater rather than the tactical level alone
I understand we all want everything now, but it seems to me the devs are going in the right direction. I have no idea of their roadmap but, looking at their games published, seems to me they are adding more things with each game and expanding the scope. That gives me hope for a real Empire TW successor in the future. 🤞
As someone who played every UG and UA games, i have to admit that i got my ass handed right back to me in the first 20 hours before I got a hang to it. And I love it ! My tipp for every new player is, grab a ton of militia and encircle the shit out of the red coats, also hurry up to get to the northern parts conquered (on easy and normal it can be done before winter). And also watch out for Benedikt Arnold ofc. ^^
Looking forward to the map expanding to the midatlantic and southern colonies.

Been waiting for this. This game is on my wishlist, but I've been hesitant to pull the trigger. Seems I've been correct to wait.
Ive got over 1,200 hours in Ultimate General Civil War. Awesome game. Just bought this one. So far it is pleasing.
I just tried it out recently. It still seems a bit undercooked but it IS still in early access. Coming from UG Civil War where the maps are pretty good, the maps in UG AR are a bit dull and uninteresting. But I do enjoy the town/city management and the much deeper military management. Hopefully, the battle portion of the game will be more fleshed out upon full release.
Whatever the issues, this game is still this companies first steps into the true sandbox world of total war and I think they are knocking it out of the park! Love these guys, their games have been my favorite historical war games of the past few years
I'm just happy to see Darth take on the mantle of TW and improving and finetuning, adding new gameplay elements iteration by iteration.

Yeah capturing enemy weapons is always a big part of this kind of warfare. Especially if an army or outpost surrenders. I'm sure there were soldier on both sides of the war IRL using guns requestioned from the enemy. Hell some Southern soldiers in the US Civil War were using weapons that had been in their family after being captured from the British during the Revolutionary war. I just hope we get to develop something along the lines of the Ferguson Rifle in this. Sure it will be expensive and slow to produce but its great for small forces outnumbered if you can get enough.
This game is not for everyone right now. But by steam release it will be.
I've been enjoying Civil War (JnP rebalance mod) for almost 2 years. Still haven't finished a campaign because I learn a lot and start over with that knowledge. Incredibly deep game that captures the combat of the era and decision making of a high level officer better than anything else I've seen. I'll play this once it gets fully up to snuff, but I can attest this franchise is worth a look.
Glad to see you like the Admiral series. Naval combat is not my thing, but glad to hear it's well done. I'm sure I'll sink a few British when the time comes. 🚢
If the battles were less "blobby" which is hard to explain, and the scale was global, then I would be 100% interested. I guess we all really want a proper empire 2. And by the way, as someone who is passionate about this era, yhe ships atr so much better and more realistic than in total war empire and napoleon. Like seriously. I actually just auto the naval battles there because the ships are wrong. Total War land battles are great though. Not really "blobby" like ultimate general

@edwardliu111 The naval battles in general. (Empire and Napoleon) Just no where near the level of their potential. Just a battle in the open sea. Not even coastlines or a different setup for port blockades etc. And the ships mechanics and handling themsleves - well everything - is just very arcade-ey. The models are low quality and incorrect. The physics as well. But the games are old so this is not a criticism - just that I personally am taken out of immersion when I must fight a sea battle so I just auto resolve them.
The battles in ultimate admiral age of sail would be perfect for empire or napoleon. Maybe a future total war set in these periods can achieve this. Everyone wants an Empire 2. And there is so much potential. Hell, give me the funding and I'll make sure its the best total war ever.
thanks for the review. i just started watching a lets play of the game. its so fun to watch. love the campaign map with the cities and forts. Want to see what the modders do with this game. I can't wait to see what modders do with this. I also hope they add this campaign map to the civil war game. not sure if that is possible.
The economy runs a bit better now with the latest patch especially if you can snag and sell a few trade ship. But the Brits will roll up with insanely powerful fleets in no time. The British can also produce troops quickly even in areas you would think are cut off from supply, at least in my experience. However they do seem to not replenish them so well from previous battles in some areas. And they seem to have instantaneous knowledge of your movements on the strategy map.
Will buy this game next payday. Was looking for a non biased review and you delivered - subscribed.
Man i just want to skip through the years where game labs becomes an AA game company and already deplveloped a napoleonic era ultimate general that expands from hispania up to west russia.
Looks like a 2D-Version of Empire Total War.

@@Snitram19the only difference from total war from what i see was that the number of troop doesn't match with the graphic (100 troop doesn't look 100 if counted on the screen, while total war matched)
I still play UG:CW with mods. That game was so beautiful and had so much raw potential I'm very excited about this one and it looks like the developers have learned a lot from their past releases and might be onto something special here

Realistically, the short answer would be “no” to the first part of your question. Not counting any other factors, there’s a scale problem that could not be overcome without merging many tribes into one country/faction.
I will say that even though being at range and firing volleys of lead into your opponent during this time was a strategy. The British strategy was often to fire only one or two volleys before charging in with bayonets.

I was kinda hoping they would just remake Ultimate General Civil War, but with a bit more variety in the Napoleonic Wars. The focus on battles and less on economy was my favourite part of UG.
So far to me Civil war is far superior to this game

I think from the experience the company's built up thus far, an ultimate general Napoleon would be a sick game. With the vast number of troops like UGCW has plus the real time campaign element would be amazing.

This sounds like it is what us TW fans have been waiting years for. I am really excited to play this game, but I run a business so it might be hard to get into until my slow season which is only 1-2 months of the year :(
But where is the diplomacy? The americans didnt won the War of independence because they were so strong and mighty, but because the french helped them. Without the french soldiers and the french fleet, they would not have won. Normaly, the main focus of such a game would be diplomacy.
I just have a few notes
-the random use of classic paintings and seemingly AI generated artwork which I’m kinda iffy on personally.
-will we see a reflection of our French and Spanish support? Like getting more money, guns, and troops since we really couldn’t do that by ourselves? Would maybe add the feeling of a struggling revolution growing stronger over time despite the obstacles. This is mostly a perosnal thing so I can’t hold it against it if they don’t.
Music and artstyle are top notch

Battles feel like an arcade version of those in UG Civil War. I am pretty disappointed.
Are the tactical battles still too fast? I watched some early videos and it seemed all so fast. Things like unit movement alarmed me, the player seemed easily overwhelmed to worry about the smaller details of the tactical battle cause the AI enemy was moving so fast and all at once.

Appreciate the video been watching this one for a long time. Letting it cook a while longer before I dive in but will certainly be buying it. UGCW is one of my favorite games ever.

It almost feel like Game Labs are slowly building the series up, game by game, until they have the experience and mechanics to make a true total war competitor.
Is there any presence or interaction with indian americans tribes? Or the use of Guerrilla units? Or Recon units for fog of war? I also would like the interaction with spanish and french. Thanks for the review ive been waiting for this game. Reminded me of Liberty or Dead by KOEI in SNES. (Those good old days) I might give it a try soon.

I prefer GOG to Steam so I'm hoping this and Ultimate Admirals leave the Steam yard and come play soon. I have both their US Civil War games and liked them a lot plus I've always felt the American Revolution deserved more attention in gaming then it gets.
Have played tw since Shogun1 but now with Pharao. I will never buy a new tw... This looks amazing :D

My issue right now is how freaking hard it is. Like holy crap. I can at best make a 5000 man army. But everytime I do the British will just drop 15000 men on the map. Like calm down

В свое время мне очень понравилась The Ultimate General Civil War. Играл исключительно за Конфедератов ;) Часть про революцию, думаю, будет очень нишевой. Т.к. не представляет особого интереса для людей за пределами США. Ну разрабы молодцы конечно. Хоть и после части про гражданскую войну от них ждали игру про эпоху той же Наполеоники, но они предпочли делать никому не нужные игры про кораблики (которые продались тиражом намного ниже той же Гражданской войны). Будем посмотреть, как говорится, но особого "бума" как Гражданская война, часть не возымеет. Того глядишь, может разрабы морально созреют к разработке "более сложной механики" Наполеоники, а может даже и Первой Мировой Войны, которые в разы больше вызовет интерес у людей по всему миру.
It's not truly a competitor to Total War until the battles are done better. With 3d units and proper unit representations etc. It looks like a really small American campaign map too. Does it cover the entire East Coast?

Subbed and liked. Went for the general edition. As a huuuuge revolution guy myself, along with the fact that I have played UG: Civil war so much. I couldn’t pass this up. Looks like an instant classic and I cannot wait to play after download!

Still not Released on Steam, Is there a Reason other than Corp Greed mayhaps? it Looks Great but...I would have prefered a UG with Many More Camps not just US or UK..I can undestand that is complicated but Its the Next Step I hope, maybe we can hope for a UG French Revolution? Play as "Nap" rise to fame or pick one of the Coaltion Nations that Fought the French? I dont hate UG American Revoultion or the previous titles, I lovem very much..though UG - AD Still needs some rework in Economy & few other stuff..

I exited for this game even though I'm a bit disappointed that they dropped the possibility to play as the British on launch. I really don't Care to play as the Americans. Will probably wait to get it till its reduced.

I like your videos, but "Ultimate General is finally here!" is a misleading clickbait.
Game is not yet released. It will be released as another Early Access title this year, so to play complete game we will most likely have to wait until 2025.

I have every one of their games except this one(not released on steam yet), and Age of Sail. I just coincidentally really like the types of games they make. I really enjoy their colonial era strategy games like Gettysburg and civil war(which are classics at this point IMO), some of their other games are a bit meh though or have had a rough dev.
Naval action i'm looking at you! By no means a bad game, but its development kind of left gamers with a sour taste and a low player count (which sucks for an MMO).
Dreadnoughts is marginally better than Naval Action, the AI is stupid and the campaign system is lacking. UI is pretty bad too. It's overly long EA caused problems too, i get the feeling the game was too expansive and they released it too early. It still feels like it is in a sort of late EA version 0.8ish. Technically these are both great games! There is a shit ton of simulations going on under the hood.
Not completely relevant to this game, but these are some pretty solid devs. Naval Action still gets updates and news letters even though is was a fucking shit show a few years back and most would have abandoned it. They are dedicated. I just hope the same Civil War and Gettysburg devs are on this dev team because those games are outstanding. I will most definitely get this game, i've been patiently waiting for it.

It's still in some pre early access state. They basically just sent keys to influencers like this one. They plan to release it on Steam as a early access title this year. Game will be in EA for at last a half year.
TLDR:. Wait until late 2025 to play complete and patched game.

What is the unit and army scale? Seems small.

Even though this is still very early there's so many features I keep coming across that constantly have me go "Why can't we have that in X game" or "Why hasn't someone done this before".
Really want them to get building/ economy to a good level because right now it is confusing and takes forever to get a single building let alone a whole economy.
I think group movement needs to be looked at. I miss the UG:CW movement. Moving more than one unit right now is a pain. Or at least less efficient than I'd like.

I can't help but think the devs should have chosen the conquest of the Americas and kept the civil war as an expansion/DLC down the road. The raplayability seems extremely low to a mere few campaigns with only 2 factions. Also how will the Brits not be a steamroll campaign.
Graphics are pretty mobile too and even though they use fences to stand behind, forests and buildings don't seem to offer much. Lackluster rosters too?
Events and micromanagement seems to be going in the right direction though.
Would be nice to see smuggling, which played a major part during this time and what about the French who ended up making the Americans get their independence.
Seems like a decent 20 buck vacation game albeit years to cook yet, so who knows what the devs come up with. Hope to see something good in future updates, atleast nice to see more competition for TW like this and Manor Lords although both titles has miles to go before coming close, but then again, CA keeps simplifying TW, so maybe one day they will meet in the middle. :]
Yeah, ACW is a nice idea for a DLC/expansion but not that great as a standalone game. Only 2 factions. Not much replayability.
A shame that they didn't try to compete with Empire Total War.

It''s just not. I bought it, tried it and it is nowhere near the depth of TW games, unfortunately. The hype here must come from payed review or just a very hardcore fan.
You do know that comparing a small indie studio with a 300+ employee AAA juggernaut is foolish? Those guys have accomplished something incredible here and deserve every praise, not unfair comparisons

I don't know for sure yet but the entire campaign isn't released yet but the map extends more and more as you play through right now I have Cananda and the USA and there is Still more I think in the sandbox you cam lead a invasion on British empire further into the campaign won't know for sure for some time still as they have only released a small portion of the game
