- Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson interviews himself on the subject of the new album Thick As A Brick Two: whatever happened to Gerald Bostock... Forty minutes of interview in 4 parts. PART 4
Glad he finally got the interview he deserved.
He's got such a great sense of humor. He doesn't mind poking fun at himself.
Ian, you are the greatest! I spend 100's of bucks on your music over the years, got almost everything you've ever published, and I've never regretted a single penny of it!
That said, I still loved Passion Play and you should consider giving it another look sometime.
After deciding early on that "A Passion Play" was too inaccessible, I put it aside for many years and nearly forgot about it until I read Raymond Benson's "Pocket Essential Jethro Tull" and his deep appreciation of the album. So I revisited "A Passion Play" and you know what? It's a great album! And rediscovering it all these years later is like finding a new Tull album with the group at the peak of its form, and Ian in the best voice of his career! Bravo! No disparagement of APP, please! APP2?
Thanks so much Ian. This was a funny concept. I would interview you n help you out.. I know most interviewers ask the same questions over and over..how'd the band get it's name? can you still stand on one leg? bla bla vla..Looking forward to everything coming down the line. So amazing that you're working with Steven Wilson on all this stuff. Proves that you do care about quality.. now's the time to dig out the lost live recordings of either TAAB or Passion Play and sell a zillion cd's or dvd's
Ian, you're right and wrong about A Passion Play. Yes, it is dense and complex but doesn't sound "desperate". Currently in 2016 I'm listening to the album a lot and for all its difficult intensity, it is a marvellous record, in some senses the best Jethro Tull album. Yes: Jethro Tull's best album.
Hahahaha!! Ian is an universal creator - a sun and always changing like the moon. A genious with teamspirit ... Greetings from Vienna!
I could listen to Ian for hours - so articulate and his voice has a calming timber. A Passion Play is my favourite Tull album, bought the LP a couple of times and it's up there with early Genesis, ELP and Bach as my favourite music ever made.
Ian can you tell Ian that A Passion Play is perfect and the sax is so cool and i am so happy to have it and i cherish it. Be nice to your creation. It loves you. Love it back.
Thanks for that interview, Ian! Really looking forward to TAAB2!
Fantastic interview Ian! The best I've heard from Ian in a long time. I can assure you that I'll buy TAAB2 as soon as it's out!
And actually at least for me, I have the "OMR, Original Master Recording" set of Passion Play CD, and bought the 40th Anniversary ... I like the sound of the old one better, in fact much better. I am not sure why, maybe it is like rubbing the patina of an old artwork and the result is too bright and simple, or maybe I am just used to it sounding one way.
A remix of an album will never sound the same. That's why I always like the original release of classic rock albums.
Great stuff IA. I enjoyed the format!
Thank you so much! I cannot wait until your performance at the Beacon Theater, which I will be attending.... unfortunately, most people my age do not appreciate music such as yours, seeing as I am 18.
A passion play is one of my favourites records of all time. I also like the Chateau d'isaster tapes.
class act of a man
Revisit Passion Play damn it! Do it!!!!!!!! Complex and dense? Fuckin' right! The saxophone ruled!...Don't apologize for any of it!!!
I have to admit, I'd love to hear a follow-on to "A Passion Play" ... maybe make up for some of the peculiarities of that album, even thought I quite like it.
What is going to be the next 40th anniversary project ... Songs From The Wood perhaps?
I would love to see a documentary about Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson and how on Earth someone can be both so talented but also so energetic to keep making music and working and even experimenting with so many different styles of music and yet maintain a unique sound.
Probably not in the cards, but I'd love to see reunions of the old bands and members.
At last an interview where IA doesnt look as though he wants to strangle the interviewer, because of badly researched or banal questions!! But talking to yourself Ian is quite worrying, not least because you make a lot of sense! really looking forward to the tour and album, even though it was only sept 2011 when we last saw you.
. . . remember he was trying to reach the folks in the cheap seats. In contrast, the albums were so intimate, and the lyrics often poignant. That balance was a big part of his genius. He's changed a lot. God bless him.
OK, so when is the Jethro Tull Chat Show going to debut ?
But shouldn't it ought to take place in the park on a bench?
I LOVE characters.....😆
OK … I pre-ordered the CD on Amazon … but is there not even a preview or something online anywhere??????
I wish this guy was my dad
Ack! What happened to the audio on this one?
Seems like a decent fellow, which is saying a lot.
I remember the Time Magazine article back in the early 70s; it said he "eschewed" drug use (I never forgot that word). Frank Zappa said he never took drugs, and I always believed that. But watching Ian go nuts on stage, rubbing his nose, eyes all bugging out, it's hard to believe he wasn't coked up.
When you watch concert footage, Ian seems like he's overdoing everything: mugging, gesticulating wildly, bounding across the stage. You have to
Because that was an stage act. He stopped doing most of that in the late 90's I believe.
I really don't like the Steven Wilson remixes of Jethro Tull's albums, I really don't know why BUT I don't.
Nevermind, it's working now.
i need to speek with ian anderson about a book ..? (the back story. HUNTER S, TOMPSON..?/ANY HELP WOULD BE VERY COOL.. THANK YOU... RESEARCH NOT A BIG FAN..
@FormerlyMrBean667 agreed on everything.
What happened to your voice after 1985?
Something happened to his throat. I don't remember the details at this moment.
Ian always acts like he's old....I really dont consider him to be old...You can be 20 and be old and you can be 89 and young ...but even age wise he's not very old
Sorry, the samples don't do it for me. The keyboard sounds are way too cheesy, the guitar tone too digital, and the songwriting is substandard in my opinion. If Ian wanted to make a TAAB2, the only way to do it would have been to get (at least) Martin on board, maybe even John Evan. I'm going to buy it anyway.
