    Nice video! Great to see those scenes again - with a bit of 'proper' weather! I've had a few trips over to Kerry & the Reeks, and enjoyed a few circuits of the Coomloughra horseshoe, plus the route up Cruach Mhòr and over the tops to come down the Ladder. 20 years back, it wasn't rare to have the entire range to yourself on a weekday - though I did bump into a lone shepherd doing his job in the middle of the Beenkeragh ridge along the way! Your video has reminded me of all this, so thanks! :)

      Thanks very much Russell, glad it brought back good memories.
      That farmer on the Beenkeragh Ridge must have one of the toughest commutes to work of anyone.
      The Coomloughra Horseshoe is a good day on the mountains, I’ve only done it once.
      It’s been too long since I’ve been to the Reeks myself, I must head back as there’s no excuse really for me. Thanks again. 👍

      @@eddieforde Completely agree! Sadly, it's become more difficult for me to get over to the Reeks from the UK since the Swansea-Cork Ferry closed, as the drive from Rosslare is no fun at all! But it's a fine range of mountains, and lovely to see you making the most of them. 👍

      Alright lad, I don’t think there’s any totally safe way down, you need a head for heights in some parts of the zig zags alright, thought I’d a clip saying it but I must have missed it. On this day the ladder was so wet and soft it was the best option, but care must be taken on all routes 👍🏻. Thanks

    A County Down man here, me and my 9-year-old son did Slieve Donard in the Mournes last summer. He did great, thought he would get bored, but he loved it. I used to love going down to Kerry in the summer, but haven't went down with my son or did any peaks, do you think theres a big difference in the difficulty of Carrauntoohil and Donard?, he's excited to give it a go, he wants to do the highest peak in Ireland after doing the highest in the Mournes. PS great video, loved it.

    • @eddieforde
      @eddieforde  Рік тому +1

      Hi Ruben, not sure I’m in a position to say if your son could do this or not, as there are so many variables at play here, but my thoughts are.
      I’ve not done Donard, yet, but from what I’ve seen elsewhere on UA-cam, there’s a big difference in difficulty between the “easiest” routes up both mountains, with Carraun being almost 200m higher. like I said in the video, there’s no easy way up it.
      Changeable weather would also be a big factor to consider,
      You say also you haven’t done any peaks in Kerry, so I’m not sure doing Carraun as the first one would be advisable, not to mind with a 9 year old, I know I built up to it by gradually doing a number of other peaks before hand.
      Yes, I have seen young ones up there, but again, I’ve no idea of their experience or the experience of the accompanying adult.
      The route in this video is around 13-14km and then you have the elevation gain also.
      Being from Down, you can’t exactly do a reccy, and I’d hate for you to come all the way down here on my saying.
      So, to be honest, if you are asking me, I probably wouldn’t advise it, not yet.
      You could maybe ring one of the companies that does guided walks up Carrauntoohil and see what they’d say, they’d have the knowledge, especially across the different age groups.
      Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻😬

      @@eddieforde Thanks for the reply Eddie, we'll go down in July and just have a look, see what the weather is like. We're going to Dingle for a week, there's plenty of other treks we can do if it's too much for him. I'll give him a practice trek or two in the Mournes again beforehand and take it from there. Thanks again.

      @eddieforde  Рік тому +1

      I was working off ye coming down specifically to do it, but if you’re coming down for the week anyway, then what you said is spot on. Give a look and there’s so many options you’d be sorted. I should have mentioned, you’d see many people walk from Cronin’s yard to around the foot of the ladder and just get a sense of scale.
      Ye’ll have a great time down here anyway. 😬⛰️🥾

    Something wrong with the video today 11 Dec 2023, could not understand a word, the audio was playing at fast forward or something. Great hike report from a mountain I’ve hiked many years. My favourite is always Brother Sheas. Happy trails

      Hi Michael. Just watched it there and there’s definitely something off, it seemed to play about 3-4 seconds faster than it should, can only presume it was worse when you watched it. Whatever UA-cam are doing as its been up since April, hope they sort it 🤞🏻
      I know I’m hard to understand at the best of times and I try to add subtitles to most videos but what you’re describing would be not good.

      Hi Paul, of the few people I go walking with, we all have a different best way up, but my favourite is probably the heavenly gates route. If it’s your first time heading up I’d say the Ladder. They all have their own charm and difficulty. As I said in the video there’s no easy way up to it.
