  • The sacred motet of Dieterich Buxtehude, Herr wenn Ich nur Dich Hab' (BuxWV 38), performed by the internationally acclaimed Early Music ensemble Voices of Music. Live, high-definition video from the "Bach, Biber & Buxtehude" concert in St. Mark's Lutheran, San Francisco, 9 March 2013. Featuring Laura Heimes, soprano; Elizabeth Blumenstock & Carla Moore, baroque violins; William Skeen, five-string baroque cello; Farley Pearce, violone; Hanneke van Proosdij, organ; David Tayler, archlute.
Buxtehude's motet is a model of elegant simplicity: the composer carefully alternates the declamation of the text with instrumental meditations in the violins, all woven together over a repeating ground bass played by the continuo group. The beauty and simplicity of the text, drawn from Psalm 73, is mirrored perfectly by the elegant and simple musical setting--a perfect composition. The motet, composed c1668, was transcribed from the source in the manuscript collection of the Royal Swedish Court in Uppsala, Sweden which contains Queen Christina's (Kristina Augusta, 1626-1689) musical library; you can view this beautifully penned manuscript as part of the online collection here goo.gl/fgw73
The Düben Collection was primarily the work of the composer and music collector Gustaf Düben; Düben was in many cases able to preserve the autograph copies of manuscripts, and Buxtehude's copy of the Latin cantata Membra Jesu Nostri includes a dedication to Düben.

    Text and translation:
Herr, wenn ich nur dich hab,
so frag ich nichts nach Himmel und Erden,
wenn mir gleich Leib und Seele verschmacht.
So bist du doch Gott allezeit
meines Herzens Trost und mein Heil.
    Alleluja.
Lord, if I have only you,
I ask nothing from heaven and earth
If my body and soul are dying,
You, God, are always my heart and salvation.
    Alleluia. (Psalm 73:25-6)

Buxtehude, a very under rated composer. Bach and Handel were both aware of this great man. Beautiful rendition.

This is my favorite version, I love the slow tempo, and the large continuo section with the theorbo is just perfect. And what a beautiful soprano, wonderful sound, rhetoric, and presence.

The tempo is perfect. It’s often played too fast; this version is sensitive and sublimely paints the text

"Sublime" is the only word needed to describe this performance.

So hard to explain the feeling when listening to this sublime masterpiece. All languages get short of words to express so much.

Sometimes, speakers of a language give it a bad name, because of how poorly they do it. Well, if music is a language, then it is the native language of Voices of Music. You speak it so brilliantly!

Listening Buxtehude it seems that that times people were closer to something, which is intangible in our times... I didn't know Buxtehude or, at least didn't realize that it was he, until noticed that he was the "teacher" of Bach. Then I decided to listen his works. First thought was "that's why Bach liked him". Then I discovered another thing. Each composer over the ages loses that connection to the infinity. Bach is between the Buxtehude and the later ones (Beethoven, Mozart...) but he was very powerful. So, his "degradation" or "loosing connection" is less listenable. Each next composer closer to nowadays tries to touch other strings of the soul - more tangible. So, the slices of sensitivity are different from Buxtehude through Bach and now. Thanks to the fortuitousness for retaining Buxtehude findings for us!

I wonder, the next time i visit San Francisco, could i come to one of your concerts, and maybe have an after-concert "meet and greet" with the players ?
The only issue i have is with the airline. I'm really waiting for that new bill approved which allows violins to be hand carried. ♥ :-/
Hope to see you all someday !!! ^_^

Es ist schon etwas ärgerlich, wenn das System den von mir geschriebenen Begriff "Theorbe" nachträglich zu "Theorie" umwandelt (siehe unten), aber das hat mit der Musik nichts zu tun..
