    Kawasaki used to be top dog in the beginner bike game with the Ninja 250. After that, they released the much-needed Ninja 300. Now, in 2018, we find ourselves with a brand new Ninja 400. Is this the perfect bigger bike or does the engine push it out of that class?

    Most (if not all) Kawasaki have a feature called "positive neutral finder" and here's what it says in the manual:
    "When the motorcycle is standing still, the transmission cannot be shifted past neutral from 1st gear, To use the positive neutral finder, shift down to 1st gear, then lift up on the shift pedal while standing still, The transmission will shift only into neutral"
    So the reason you think neutral is hard to find it's because it's impossible to miss.

    You say it doesn't have enough passing power on the highway, but at the end you recommend a Ninja 300 over this because this has a little too much power? Don't get me wrong, I like your reviews and first rides and appreciate the effort, but you kind of want 2 opposite things for this bike...

    ABS can save your life even if your not a beginner. There are situations in which even the most experience rider can be suprised and have to break so quickly and violently. In that situation even if your a expert rider having ABS can save your life.

      Technically you’re wrong, practically you’re right. The shortest stopping distance is produced by breaking up to right before the tire will lock up. And if one practices emergency breaking enough they could break in time. But that would take tones of practice

      @@simon10121997 that may be true on the track where the surface is homogene and clean. On the road it only needs a little dirt or a white stripe on the road and you lock up that front tire. I've been there and ABS saved my ass.

After about 4 or 5 nite rides I feel super confident on this bike. Still not comfortable at highway speeds yet but the streets between 35 and 55 mph, I’m solid. Great video dude... One reason I got the ninja400. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

    • @horizontide568
      @horizontide568 5 років тому +2

      @@Jeeksters well the 650 sets more upright like the 400 so the ride is way more comfortable. Depends on your height and length of your inseam. I'm 5'9" and I ended up getting the zx6r (a 600 sportbike) and I can reach the ground pretty easily but not completely flat footed unless I'm sitting straight up and not touching the handle bars. The 650 isnt a racer but if you get it please give that bike the respect it deserves bc it still has alot of power. I would highly recommend you taking a motorcycle safety class if you can before getting the bike to give yourself some experience being completely new to riding The class also will help you get a discount on insurance. Hope this helps man.

It’s really light so it’s easy to stay balanced when rolling around in neutral. Only thing is and maybe because I’m newer, it’s a little rough downshifting, and getting off from a stop sometimes... but like i said I’m pretty sure it’s because I’m new lol.

    As for the colors, I like the orange/gold accented one and the kawi green accented one. I think the blue has a bit too much blue, and the murdered out one is just a bit too much black. Need to break up the colors a little bit and bring some definition to the bikes lines. I think the color accented ones do that and it makes the bikes look better for it.

    1)Every review iv'e seen of this bike on track says its amazing for what it is. You say it sucks on track while riding it on the street and your reason is the handle bars? Last i checked every bike in this class has similar bars. Also if you are buying this as a small track bike, you will be changing the ergos. A track specific bike will not stay stock. That goes for the brakes as well.
    2) If you think the Ninja 400 makes to much power for beginners how did you survive starting on a SV650? How did i survive my FZ07?
    Could it be that "CCs is not even close to everything when to comes to what matters on a bike." your words, and i agree with you. The motorcycle as a complete package is what matters.
    3)I took my WR250R on the highway all the time, That bike in stock form makes 30hp (that's a generous number btw) The bike never made me feel unsafe.
    If the only reason you feel unsafe on the highway is because the bike only makes 30 to 40 hp, id suggest looking at the rider not the bike.
    4) The Ninja 400 is right behind the R3 in your listing... why? is it because the R3 is a Yamaha? You gave no reason so im left to assume. The R3 is less bike for the same price. Not saying its a bad bike, but no one who knows what they are talking about would call the R3 the winner here.

    • @Mayank3515
      @Mayank3515 6 років тому

      Power wise, this bike is slightly better than the R3 only because it has more power because of extra cc's (45HP vs 42HP and 30NM vs 38NM). They are veeeryyyy close!

    • @williamdeimos2354
      @williamdeimos2354 6 років тому +5

      The R3 makes 35hp to the wheel, the Ninja 400 makes 43hp to the wheel. Its the KTM RC390 that's veeeeeeryyyy close to the Ninja. And considering the R3, Ninja 400, and RC390 all cost the same.... well The R3 isn't worth considering.... unless you buy one used for cheap that is, the Ninja is brand new so no cheap used options available yet. Im not saying the R3 is bad, just outclassed. Ive ridden both, the Ninja is objectively better than the R3. Power differences aside, its just a better bike for the money

      It's dumb. I won't be buying one those those bikes if that's going to be the companies' attitude towards it.
      I like having a tiny engine size as it makes it a lot easier to manage in traffic and makes it easier to get good gas mileage without going to heroics of engineering.
      For day to day, I'd love to upgrade my Ninja 250 to a Ninja 300, but I see no point in upgrading to a 400 because even the 300 is more power than what I actually need on a day to day basis. Even the 250 has more power than what I can reasonably use commuting.

    Great looking bike. Just hoping Kawasaki will take this engine and make a Versys 400.

    • @mickeypopa
      @mickeypopa 6 років тому +1

      I kinda doubt that will happen. Versys is an adventure touring bike so 650cc is probably as low as you can go for that. Versys X-300 is basically a little off-road bike so I don't count that. I feel like 400cc touring bike would struggle with the weight it has to carry around on long hauls (passenger, luggage, all that jazz).
      Plus, they're already busy rolling out Ninja 400 and a brand new class (Modern Classic) with 2 new bikes. That's 3 new bikes for 2018 so they have their hands full for a foreseeable future.

    • @andrewmarkert1146
      @andrewmarkert1146 6 років тому

      Really Mack? They already make the Versys 300 genius! They dd not bump it up to 400cc with the Ninja. Most likely they will next year, wanting to use up existing inventory.

    • @mickeypopa
      @mickeypopa 6 років тому

      Andrew Markert
      Yes, they do GENIUS. So why the hell would they waste time and resources designing Versys that nobody would buy for adventure touring? No logic in there, pal. 3-4 years down the line, sure bump it up to 400 if you've got nothing better to do. However, as of THIS MOMENT they are launching THREE new bikes. There's no chance in hell they'll launch Versys 400 when the market for adventure touring is already covered and covered good with their Versys 650 and Versys 1000.

    • @Jimbo4575
      @Jimbo4575 6 років тому

      Andrew Markert how is a 400 Versys any different from a 400 Ninja? They already have a 300, 650 and H2 is 1000 Ninja. Can a 400 really do anything that the others can’t? I would like to get my wife a Versys 300 but don’t want to have to keep the rpms in the 10k ranges just to do highway speeds. A remapped 400 would make this possible. From what I have read the 400 exterior size is the same as 300. Besides engine mapping would be a easy swap.

    • @andrewmarkert1146
      @andrewmarkert1146 6 років тому

      Moron, you say nobody would buy an adventure bike lower than 650cc. They already make the 300cc, so why wouldn't they bump it up to 400cc. Using your own logic, it only makes sense. You are the one lacking logic, and i'm not your pal!

  • @Bosephjones
    @Bosephjones 6 років тому +31

    Aside from the fact that I cannot stand the term "beginner bike," You mention that Yamaha and Kawasaki are really the only competitors in this market, but you've left out the offering from KTM. As far as a track bike is concerned, most who are going to convert it to a track bike are going to swap the rear sets and the clip ons for more purpose built. Kawasaki left a lot of room for customization for this machine, as seen with the noted space left above the fairings where the clip ons are mounted.
    The tire profile for the ninja 400 is goofy. the rear is a 150/70/17 which is not a widely produced size. The more common norm with Pirelli and Metzeler is 150/60/17. I havent swapped my wife's tires out yet, but to me, the turn in for this bike is not super confidence inspiring once the bike is in "mid fall" in a turn.
    This bike is absolutely a bike that a rider can grow into, but so is a ninja 300. The notion that someone would be "done' with a 300cc bike within 6 months really isnt realistic unless they were tracking the bike every weekend and going to very advanced training courses with it. People THINK they have maxed the bike's potential, but there is so much more than can be learned from them. People blame the machines for their inefficiencies instead of looking at themselves.
    Adam Waheed, MC Magazine, and Revzilla ripped all over a track on this bike and had great things to say about it.

      The one thing that I hate hearing from people is that they've outgrown their smaller cc bike for this exact reason. Riding around for 2000 miles over the course of 6 months on the street does not mean you've somehow outgrown it. You're bored of the acceleration, you have not outgrown it

    • @thursdayfan
      @thursdayfan 5 років тому +1

      @@kleinbottled79 My point exactly. There is a lot more to rider "skill" than how fast you can pin the throttle and shift. Outgrow assumes the bike is holding you back... Until you can rip a 125 or 300 around in the mountains or on a track, the only thing a very fast bike will do is mask how much you actually suck at riding
      20-75hp with short gearing is the most fun you can have on two wheels anyway (personal opinion)

      Chase is a bit of a Yamaha fan boy. I feel like he was really stretching the limits of reason trying to hold the R3 up as anywhere near as good of a bike as this 400. Slipper clutch, more sophisticated rear suspension, better power. Plus, kawasaki seem to have the formula for making this kind of bike SUPER reliable. But he's saying - the ninja 300 at 39hp isn't enough; the ninja 400 with 45 is too much, but the 42hp R3 is somehow just right? They all have the same sport touring handle bars too, so, not really sure what he's on about.

    I agree with what you said about smaller bikes being fun. I’m getting close to being 50 years old and I’m finding small sport bikes a lot of fun! Might even buy me a ninja 400.

      I bought a 09 ninja 500. It's a fun bike and you can get one pretty cheap. Insurance was $8 extra a month for me

    I have the 2015 model (I'm in Japan, the 400cc class is much bigger here, the Ninja400 has been around for ages) and love it. It is my first bike ever and after a couple months of riding, I still have a lot to learn on her. I did take rides with passenger - not optimal but not horrible either. Too bad they've put on this exhaust pipe on the 2018 model, mine has it sort of under the body which gives it a much sleeker, slimmer look (especially with my integrated tail lights and removed rear fender).
