- The New Perry Mason The Case of the Wistful Widower
Episode aired Oct 7, 1973 S1 E4
*The New Perry Mason is a CBS TV series that ran from 1973 to 1974. It was a revival of the 1957 Perry Mason television series about Erle Stanley Gardner's brilliant defense attorney.
All of the major characters of the original series appeared in the revival, along with Gertie, a receptionist seldom seen in the original (and played by Connie Cezon on the few occasions when she was), and the plots and their devices were along the lines of the original. The familiar theme song of the original, "Park Avenue Beat," was replaced by a generic dramatic fanfare.
This revival was cancelled at mid season, after failing to overtake NBC's The Wonderful World of Disney and ABC's The F.B.I. in the ratings in its Sunday night time slot. It ranked 71st out of 80 shows airing that season, with a 13.1 household rating. It was soon replaced by Apple's Way.
CAST:
Monte Markham as Perry Mason
Sharon Acker as Della Street
Albert Stratton as Paul Drake
Dane Clark as Lt. Arthur Tragg
Harry Guardino as Hamilton Burger
Brett Somers as Gertie Lade

I wish people would try to give the new Perry Mason a chance. I loved all the actors and don't want Perry Mason to stop.😊
I still like the old perry mason series shows!!!!!!!
Nothing compares to Raymond Burr
Exactly 💯
the original Perry Mason with Raymond Burr, Barbara Hale, William Hopper and William Talman is just too hard to follow with a different cast. The original actors are icons. All who follow in the roles pale in comparison. Also the original theme song "Park Avenue Beat" is synonymous with the show. Nothing about this show gives me the feel that I'm watching Perry Mason. This is still.a good show, but it would take a long time to except it as "Perry Mason".
As a Perry Mason fan, I share similar sentiments. This is the first time I came across this vid. I live in the Caribbean and wasn't even aware that there had been a New Perry Mason show! Somehow, most of the 'New' shows from originals just don't cut it; I guess that's why they don't last. Though seeing this New Perry Mason show for the first time, I just couldn't 'go through with it!' 🤣
Accept
I will always love the black and white Perry Mason and Lt Traggs
@@jenniferfields1084can you send the link. I am 73 and a huge fan,in 1967 October, I read my 1st Perry book.
By December 67 i had collected 99 books. I loved Tragg and Dreak ,of course ,Della .
So if u can i will be in 7 th HEAVEN.💞
Although it has some of the original actors, nobody's ever gonna take the place of the wonderful, original and talented cast. Miss them all.
Because of The New Perry Mason, Mason is represented on TV in the 1950's, '60s, '70s, 80s and '90s, with this series representing the '70s, even though it was only one season, and a different cast. It carried on the tradition.
No one can replaced Raymond Burr
period.!🇯🇲🇨🇦😊
I've always thought Raymond Burr was much better as Ironside.
This is the first time I have seen the new Perry Mason, not bad, will continue to watch..
Thank you more episodes coming soon! Thx for tuning in. Enjoy...The RET'
@@TheRetNetwork. Thank you for posting! Michigan 👋🏻😀
This episode was like a reunion of Blanche's boyfriends and brother from Golden Girls: I spotted Monte Markham (her gay brother), Donnelly Rhodes (her near-boyfriend Jake), Bruce Kirby (her pharmacist boyfriend). Maybe Rue McLanahan should have played Della Street!
Thank You for posting this video.
Our pleasure, thanks for commenting!
Awesome!! Please post more episodes!!💗💗
Appreciated see this … please continue to post ☺️
Yes, more please! I've watched the two that I found here. Are there more you can upload? Subscribed!
Good movie thank you for sharing
Glad you enjoyed!
It’s okay but it’s not Raymond Burr!
Very good Perry Mason episode!!
Monte markham wasnt really cut out for the role of perry mason, because raymond burr was a though act to follow.
I think you have to look at this show as something unto itself, and not compare it to the 1957-'66 series or the 1980's and '90s movies with Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale. It's hard not to of course, but that's really what you (and I) need to do to be fair. I love the red Dodge Charger used here that was produced from 1971-'74.
Thank you for sharing.
I can't believe how much I love ur channel ❤️❤️❤️
What a nice thing to say Minouche! Thanks so much for the supporting The Ret' Network!!!
Raymond Burr will forever be the one and only Perry Mason. And the CBD execs at the time of this show highly underestimated Disney and The FBI.
Good show,thanks.👍
Glad you enjoyed it
There is only one Perry Mason Raymond burrs
Since apparently nobody noticed ...
Just about everyone on the production team here was a direct carryover from the original Perry Mason series.
Watch enough of these newer shows, and you'll see the names of writers, directors, crew, and at the top, the same producing team:
Cornwell Jackson and Gail Patrick, plus Art Seid and Ernie Frankel as line producers.
Yep - good eye. It was from Paisano Productions, the same production company as the original, which was formed by Erle Stanley Gardner, Cornwall Jackson, and Gail Patrick. Patrick and Jackson were divorced by the time this new series aired, but they were still partners in the production company. But Patrick didn’t want anything to do with the new series, and she only got the consultant title due to her financial interest in the show.
Part of the nostalgia of the old PM series was that William Talman (Hamilton Burger), William Hopper (Paul Drake), and Ray Collins (Lt. Arthur Tragg) had passed on by the time the new PM hit the airwaves. They were just as irreplacebale in those roles as Raymond Burr as the original PM.
The actors may be different, but the tit-for-tat quips between the two attorneys before the judge are as amusing as ever: Hamilton Burger's valiant efforts to break the spell of Mason's magic leave the Big Cheese with just more egg on his face... Thanks for uploading! Didn't realise this series existed. A comparison with the original series is perhaps unfair, I certainly enjoyed this episode!
This was a rehash of the Raymond Burr Perry Mason script "The Case Of The Fanciful Frail" in Season 9. The only change they made was in that story the 2 people switching places were women, not men as in this one.
Another set of changes from the original episode: The genders of all three primary characters (victim, defendant, murderer) were switched.
Another anomaly, the actress who played the murder victim, Chris Forbes as Joy Montgomery, was NOT credited. I wonder why.
It wasn't a bad show but if it didn't have the name Perry Mason attached to it I probably would never have watched it!
Re-makes are never as good as the originals and they could have used an original script instead of using an old idea from the original series. Did they think no one would notice?
🦂🥂.
By the way, 6 episodes of the original Perry Mason's final season were remakes of adaptations of novels which had already been filmed earlier in the series. Didn't notice that, did you?
Hawaii 5 0 remake lasted 10 seasons
So glad I saw the original Perry Mason, with Raymond Burr. Fortunately, this Perry Mason is not what I would ever watch for any other episodes.
I never knew PM remade a cancelled.
Too bad about the lack of sync
😲 Question: Is it at all Possible to have all 15 episodes of " THE NEW PERRY MASON " Available to Stream & Watch on UA-cam ??? I only see 2 episodes Available on UA-cam
This is actually the first time I've ever seen an episode of the New Perry Mason anywhere. This show was okay at best. It might not have been the same as the iconic original version of Perry Mason, but I give this short-lived revival an A+ for effort. As for this revival's new french horn-dominated mellow-sounding theme song, I also give it an A+ for effort. Guess they avoided using the iconic "Park Avenue Beat" theme song because they wanted to leave that song in the old PM era. They wanted everything new and give the PM franchise a fresh start. It may not have lasted long but all in all not bad I say.
Thanks for sharing Roberto, we appreciate you! The RET'.
@@TheRetNetwork you're welcome
👍🏾
Monte Markham, who played the doctor of jurisprudence, is the only surviving cast member.
R.I.P. to the following performers
Harry Guardino, who played district attorney Hamilton Berger, died in 1994
Dane Clark, who played Lieutenant Arthur Tragg, passed away in 1994
Arthur Stratton, who played Paul Drake, died in 2012
Sharon Acker, who played Della Street, passed away recently in Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦.
Markham & Acker both guested on "Alias Smith and Jones'.
old classic
There are some familiar faces here. Bruce Kirby, Donnelly Rhoades, and Arthur Franz have been in many other TV shows
Dutch and the Major from Soap
Dennis Patrick was also in the original Perry Mason. Nice to see him once again as a sleazy character.
Its not the same as the real Perry mason
LOL. There is no "real" Perry Mason. It's all fiction. People who think only one actor can play a part are short-sighted.
Svengoolie would LOVE THIS. ...HA! 😄😞😄
loved the '50's-'60's perry mason where burger was on such an opposite side and disliked mason so much, but also like the twist to this one where burger and mason are friends when not in the courtroom.
For sure, thanks for commenting!
@@TheRetNetwork I'll also mention the old show was well know for the antagonism between Perry and Burger and Perry and Tragg. It was always great that whenever they had Perry pinned, Perry would end up making a chump out of both of them.
What year was this from please?Thankyou for posting.I do like all the Perry Mason TV movies best,i guess its because its more of my era.I was born in 1970 and watched the made for tv movies in the 80's.
Thanks for watching, this episode is from 1973.
The original Perry Mason actor's ie. Raymond Burr, Barbara Hale, William Hopper and William Talman set the standard in late 60s and 70, and of course 80s audiences very much looking to hear Raymond Burr's deep voice and perfect delivery of dialog. This New Perry Mason lacks and ultimately loose interest.
Forgot how obnoxious the background music in these shows was.
I agree with Janiya west.
Oh why can't they make the original b & w episodes available. A few will do. 😊
They are available. Ever heard of DVDs? Reruns on MeTV?
he's nothing like Perry Mason
You mean the man playing Perry Mason is nothing like Raymond Burr. No, he can't be. However, the storyline is consistent with how the creator of the 'Perry Mason' series, Erle Stanley Gardner, wrote. I have read just about everyone of those books. This script fits right in. The movie was a decent diversion for me.
@@plynn136 it didn't have the same feel that's all
@@joeclayton2121 Read the real Perry Mason...the novels.
i.was willing to give the new version a chance, but the sound is off, like a kung fu movie. i understand that the original cast was in it sooo long ,most people would not accept a whole new cast
Classic. Not as iconic as the original black and white but very good.
Its good to see some positive feedback on The New Perry Mason. Thanks for commenting!
Cool 😎
😢 just not Raymond Burr
I've been sweet on Monte Markham since I was a little girl. God hes gorgeous
You can't take a miiktoast like Monte Markham and make him into a credible Perry Mason. Even the character in the book was completely different than MM.
A nice try, yet would and could never hold a candle to the original series and to Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale return to the "second" Perry Mason movies.
This story was difficult to follow.
Not to take anything away from Monte Markham; he's a top actor in his own right. But, only Mr. Raymond Burr IS Perry Mason.
Like😂🎉❤
Blanche Devereauxs brother an her boyfriend pharmacist Loverboy/Bill. In the same movie.
To call this Perry Mason is an insult.
This is not Perry Mason! Good try, but no cigars for this one!
This is from the 70s. I don't like those cheap tin can like American cars from that era.Monte Markham is a brilliant actor but he just couldn't play Perry Mason like Raymond Burr could.
As we all know,Monte Markham would later go on to play Capt Don T Thorpe in Baywatch.
Monte Markham was too wooden .
Mouth movement does not match words spoken.
I've watch the earlyer mason, Then I've watch Raymond Burr Mason, This may have been good, But to me it was just a bad chioce of Actor & Director, The earler mason, I've never seen mason not know or have not have a plan, All the actor should have been fairly new to acting or just played small roles in shows.. That way it didn't make you think of a TV show or movie..
What a lot of crap. Nothing to do with Perry Mason in every aspects.
It wasn't bad. The story line was consistent with how Erle Stanley Gardner wrote the 'Perry Mason' series, however. We all know that Raymond Burr cannot be duplicated.
This is a ridiculous chapter. So overly done.
No one can figure one.
Very bed recording and terrible sound
It's not an official restored release. The originals are now owned by Disney.
If you can do something better with it, then please do and repost it! As the saying goes .."Beggars can't be choosers"...I feel fortunate just to be able to watch this episode from a rarely seen anymore TV Series that is 50 years old!📺📼📀📺📼📀
Raymond Burr is 100% better
Monte Markham was a dull actor under ordinary circumstances, but when compared to Raymond Burr?
Harry Guardino as DA "Burgess" vs Hamilton Burger. Plastic actor Monte Markham??
There's a reason this show flopped after one season.
Geez this show is terrible. But Monte was great later on as the $7 million man in SMDM.
