Installing a Boring and Facing head on a Giddings and Lewis 340T Horizontal Boring Mill

- In this video I mount the new to me Boring and Facing attachment on my G&L 340T Horizontal Table Type Boring mill. i go thru taking the spindle support collet off and show where you can mount HUGE face mills directly to the spindle. I don't have the clamp mechanisim for the drive gear though so i will have to figure something out for in the future if I want to do power facing or grooving with it. Follow along as the good the bad and the ugly conspire to make this video! Thanks for watching!

Thank goodness you have the tools (and skills) to modify other tools to fix broken tools with. Seems more like a journey than a repair - lucky for us... :)
It is often a Quest! LOL
The boring mill just keeps getting more valuable to your shop every day. I have just about decided that, with the proper owner/operator, there isn't much you can't do with that machine. I don't know whether it is the machine being so versatile, or the operator having the knowledge, and skill to use the machine to it's limits. You keep me amazed at what you can accomplish.

Saw a G&L at Westinghouse in California with a rotary table buried in concrete and the machinist rode in a cage on the head of the machine. They worked on ship props. There was a railroad track that came right up to the machine to deliver parts. Pretty cool.

You never fail to amaze me. Your facing head looks like it weighs more than my entire lathe, including the stand, and the 150 lbs of sand I put on the stand shelf to help with rigidity!
I think that facing attachment weighs about 1000lbs.

I ran a G&L 350T for a while. Had to teach myself how to use it. I never had a job which needed the facing head, nor the high speed spindle, mostly facing and hole patterns. A versatile machine, I used it instead of the mills in the shop, even for smaller jobs.
Yeah they are handy because of their work envelope. With the right tooling you can do most anything you want with one.

Good day sir. Thanks for the videos! Is there any reason you haven't cut that slug off the end and drilled into the face to make room for tooling?
Too lazy to double set it up I guess. I would have cut it off before setting it up the first time but because of wear and the previous torch attack job on that end I would not have had any good way to determine where the original center was.

Also you need to make you a spanner wrench to fit the spindle collet lock, the one that comes with the machine had a two foot long handle

High performance diesel engines are my speciality but I will work on anything that someone wants to pay me to do. I get a lot of these heavy plant type jobs just because other people can't handle them and they are worth repairing. I am told this rotor costs over $10K to replace.

It is either 2.5 or 3" I have messed with both in the last couple of days and can't remember which one was on the mill.

I like the attachment mine needs one probably have to build one I'm sure.
There is a small lever that works like a brake caliper that stops the ring gear from turning which makes the facing head feed, there is a flange on the ring gear that the caliper clamps to
I don't have the lever or the bracket and caliper sadly. i will have to try to reverse engineer it.

@@bcbloc02 Yes and I went back and re-watched your other video about the draw key. It was not shown too clear, but I gather the 2 HSS bits were both ground as wedges and the 1 set screw pushed them together. I pretty much know what you did. We are engineers for crying out loud ! --Doozer

I am afraid without the collet the milling feature may suffer. It remains to be seen if that is the case or not.

Was that a locking piece of some sort to hold the Morse taper in that you removed in the beginning of the video???
Yes I have a wedge key that holds the MT tools tightly in the spindle. It is a must for milling. There is a video where I made it.

I'm a dedicated fan and always impressed. Having said that, I respectfully ask, would it have made any sense to have cut off a tooth somewhere on each end to make room for a steady rest and then just weld them back on? Or did I miss something?
If the welds on the teeth give him as much trouble as the welds on the plug, that could turn into a disaster.
H, Another fan of Brian. I think David Wilks made an adjustable ring which then ran in a steady rest that allowed the part clearance to be swung in the lathe.
@@chamteleboy Yes you could use a spider but it would be bigger than my steady rest can handle so that would not really be a good solution for me this time.

Is clearance why you wouldn’t keep the head on permanently? Can’t the spindle come through the head? I’m missing something. Great videos as always!
On GLF machines the spindle will pass through the boring head, if my memory serves me right (been a while since I used a GLF) there is a limit on rpm. So if you are using it at higher rpm the head needs to be removed. The head should be stamped with the max rated rpm.
I figure without the collet to stabilize the end of the spindle it will degrade the milling function when using tooling in the spindle. Maybe that won't be the case and I can leave the facing head on I don't know. Will just have to see.
@6:00 - I'm calling 125-150 ft lbs on those fasteners. Dang. That impact didn't stand a chance. :D

Yes for a rather large price tag you can get stuff. I priced a gear and it was $8000

Judging from your coat, it’s not warm. What ever happened to the underfloor heating system
It is still being run with a 5000watt water heater and that keeps it about 15-20deg above outside temps. I never have hooked up that outdoor wood stove to get the real heat. I kinda want to find a good air to water heat pump and install that instead. I find it difficult to find time to tend a fire twice daily or more.

Why don't you just machine the shaft off and get it out of the way . I think you will be replacing it any way
