One of my earliest survival lessons I learned as a small child was, If you are ever lost in the woods, do NOT defile the water. Never wash up stream, and NEVER perform bodily functions in it. These are simple lessons

I take my hat off to the guy for keeping his cool. He's clearly seething internally, as would the majority of us. Yet, despite this, he still tries to meet the girl halfway in explaining why what she did - and her calm reaction - was so incomprehensible and sacrilegious.
Getting sick from poor-quality water is a truly miserable experience, yet treatable and avoidable. In this environment though, not so much. She does not realise how lucky she was that he was there to tell her how stupid she'd been, and even went to find a new water source. Had this been real and they genuinely were stranded, she could have been the death of them - or food for one. For clarity, if the roles were reversed, I'd say the exact same thing.
Aquatic life relies on a fine balance and any sudden change to that balance will inevitably have dire results. If you filled a mug and a bath with water and dropped a tea bag in each, you would see how quickly the water discolours. That is the same effect here. After a while, for the bath at least, the water may appear to be clear, but you've still got the remains of a teabag floating in it. If you have to shit outside, do so as far away from paths, trails, and water sources, etc., as possible, and bury it! Guidances is a minimum distance of 30 meters in the UK.
