I felt like crying when we had art because she gave us our books back and when I opened it ,the ripped out pages were there; she didn't tear many pages out of other people's books and she discussed ripping them out with those people , which she didn't do with me.

      +Eve Br I still don't entirely understand grading a sketchbook. For the longest time I've heard(even from teachers) that you shouldn't worry about a sketchbook looking nice. It's more meant to be a personal thing to sketch and practice in without worrying about other people seeing it. But then grading it is the complete opposite. Wouldn't that be like grading a personal diary or something?

    • @aestheticgarbage6671
      @aestheticgarbage6671 8 років тому +19

      +TXF it's not a personal sketchbook though, you use it to do assignments in and stuff. It's pretty much just a portfolio of homework. You don't use this one to sketch and plan out to your hearts desire, the teachers use it to see how talented you are.

    • @rashmika9742
      @rashmika9742 8 років тому +8

      +TXF
      No, I study art in high school as well, and your sourcebook (as we call it in South Africa) is a place to research and analyze artists so you can learn from their styles: the teachers mark your analyses so they need to be detailed and well-motivated.
      Your practice needs to be detailed as well: how well do you build on your ideas? Teachers mark your technical skill and its development, but also concept generation through mind maps, and at the end you have a reflection about how you could improve. Yes, your sketchbook doesn't have to look perfect, but that's because the teachers focus more on your approach rather than the doilies and lace borders you add (as decoration is no indication of effort or talent. Imagine if you added lace borders onto your Maths exam?) 555Emms' sketchbook illustrates very well what you should aim for in a sketchbook (if it's to be graded.)
      Art is creative, yes, but there's a process that you follow. If you do art for yourself--and not to be graded or do it as a living--then it could be as personal as a diary, and that's okay.

      555Emms I'm up north so I'm doing nationals and highers. Got an A1 for Art (but my mediums were charcoal & fire, pastel and oil paints [which took a hell of a long time to do, as I decided to do oil paint for my final piece and finish it with pastel-talk about being smart with time]) with jewellery as my project (felt it was easier than a folio). Although I had to redo my project because I may or may not have set the looping on fire when I was working with the charcoal, so that was fun...
      But my piece doesn't even compare to your book, so congrats!

    I never understood the idea of judging and grading a sketchbook. I mean, I get a class telling you to finish one, then checking to make sure you did. But grading a sketchbook seems like the exact opposite of what I always hear teachers and others saying. That in a sketchbook, you shouldn't worry about quality, or making everything look nice or be nice and neat. It's only meant to be for you to sketch and practice. But grading it says that you SHOULD try to make a sketchbook look nice with the point of other people seeing it. I don't get it.
    It does look nice though. I always enjoy seeing people flip through sketchbooks.

      I think that in england we call our books that contain all our exam projects, we call them sketchbooks. Bit of a weird name but I do gsce art and we get given a book and a bunch of stuff to do in it like artist research and observational drawings. just thought I would clear that up; this isn't like a sketchbook that you just draw in, because it gets marked by the examination boards along with the final piece. :)

      Fully agree with you ... also I think that its unnecessary for great artworks to have a long process of explorations and research, a lot of great artworks are spontaneous inspiratoins that do not necessarily involve a lot of background research. In fact sometimes I see a lot of overthinking and flowery "rationalising" of underwhelming artworks .. overthinking may in fact lead to artworks that becomes too lost on the viewers, often times the most spontaneously created ones are the ones that speaks most directly to viewers simply because the creative process is so instinctive ..

      I am looking into transferring to a different school. I go to Saint Rose which is a private school in NY and its so expensive 28k a year and I don't even live here. My scholarship and financial aid don't cover everything either so im switching to UAlbany which is like 3.7k a year and my boyfriend and friends go there. I really want to pursue art. Last semester I did pretty well but now I'm working nights with low income and no sleep taking four classes all day I don't want to take and don't even correlate with my major. For example im a psychology major (particularly abnormalities in the brain and phobias), but I'm taking a Medieval Europe to 1500's class? Like wtf and even though I took four years of spanish they made me take intro to spanish. I passed my regents in 10th grade though with a 96%. It's all for money and they say oh it will help you its a diversity or Liberal Education requirement. But I just wan't to sing and paint. My dad wants me to be a doctor and my mom wants me to be a tattoo artist. Lmfaoo I want to sing, play my violin and paint people with markers, water and watercolor though. Glad you are happy and doing what you want to do. Thank you for your incite. Shani brookk

      Hiba Ada mine is a hypocrite, idiot, tells us what to do for our gcse pieces, does not allow drawing from imagination, never actually teaches art techniques (or anything for that matter), wastes money and then complains about the art department budget, and has no respect for effort. For example, she got up one lesson, went to the back of the class, got last years folders, and shoved all of them in a wheelie bin. Didn't even empty them. Thousands of hours of work discarded in a bin overflowing by about 4 ft. To add insult to injury, she cant be arsed to remember the names of the 20 depressed students that have been in her lessons exclusively for three years. And all the other teacher don't give a shit because she "gets results from her students."
