I’d have to say overall the old school rules. Some of the last few notes were ridiculous growls, but I heard a lot of genuine powerful full voiced low notes. The competition I’d really like to see: a line up of basses hitting the low notes with NO microphone. That would be some competition that would separate the “real” low basses from those who have learned the tricks and how to manipulate a mic and sound system. I know something’s fishy when a bass is strong on G1 then C2!
@@ictdpowerstroke4591, there are several times, where JD dropped in the the 1st negative octave with subharmonics. I am a very low bass and have hit C0 with subs... getting into the negative octaves without pure fry is mind blowing (and JD did it several times by accident).
They are all good. I think a lot of the old school basses had a deeper and thicker tone. Tim Riley, JD Sumner, George Younce, and Bill Lawrence are the best to hold a mic when it comes to bass singing IMO.
You notice they are all on equal footing at C2... then the difference between those still in chest and those using a bit of fry becomes obvious. JD just keeps dropping and staying in chest voice, though, lol.
Who won?
Old school bass singers!

Jeff Pearles is awesome - low bass, melodious voice, song writer, pianist - total package.
George, Tim, and Aaron McCune are all in a classification of their own.
It seems like the new guys want to swallow the microphone. George Younce said to work the mike but don't let it work you.
I agree
Tommy Thompson was 2nd Sang bass with the statesmen on the most played Gospel song in tv history. Gene Scott's program. I wanna know.
most gospel bass singers do, oktavist and basso profundos usually don't
Tim Riley… guy is insane
17:39 JD accidental G0 sub
For your next accidental subharmonic compilation? ;)
I hear a D1, the other low notes are real G1s, that I hear.
Jd did 2 E0 in some hard to find videos

Billy Todd was my favorite bass singer, even got better as he aged. Billy sang with Florida Boys and the Dixie Echo's.

Jeff Chapman
More men smoked in the old days. There was no stigma back then. It thickened their vocal cords.
Glad to to see my buddy Larry Stewart finally get some recognition
The way Riley slipps into 1st Octave notes
Old school bass... Who else with me? 😇😇

Paul Harkey hit a D1! Awesome!
Old school bass singers won! JD hit a clear C1. Think they were more consistent given limited resources for most parts.
Bro jd can hit a crisp E0 ,,I seen 2 videos of him doing so
Only showed Big Chief one time? He's my favorite of them all .

Old school has some great notes
David Hester sounds more like an old school bass singer! So does Larry Stewart! In fact Larry should get more recognition than he does!
Old school by far.
Rex Nelon!
Old school wins, I’m just 12 years old so I have a long way to go
This is app;es and oranges. The sound quality, due to technology, is night and day difference. Style of music as well.
Tim was my old school favorite but Tim Duncan is my new favorite.
