For a long time, I didn't realize Shrek was based on a book by William Steig. If I had known, I'd forgotten. Steig was the same guy who Dr. De Soto, The Amazing Bone, Abel's Island, and Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. Most of those stories I had seen animated on those Children's Circle VHS tapes, children's entertainment tapes which used to be more readily available back in the early 90s. Steig was one of those authors and illustrators which I found very influential back in the day. I'm still impressed with Steig's art style and water colors to this day, not to mention his clever storytelling. While Steig's writing style is far different from the writing of the Shrek films, and while the Shrek films go off in their own absurd tangent beyond Steig's original intention, I appreciate both the book and film for different reasons. I recommend checking out the animated versions of Dr. De Soto and The Amazing Bone: both those renditions do a good job animating Steig's original words and artwork.
