    You are right about trigger. It is made 'sub par' on purpose. P30 is service pistol, made for German LE. They have rules on triggers, that set minimum pull length for SA, minimum reset distance, minimum pulls for DA and SA. And those rules set long trigger travel and reset. P30 is designed to meet this requirements, to be allowed for LE use in Germany. For eg. Walther PPQ (9mm travel) is banned from LE use in Germany due to too short travel (they make P99Q with legal 13mm travel for that).

    The trigger is a combat trigger much like the P226. It's not supposed to be a range or competition gun. I'm sure Navy seals don't complain about their Sig triggers. They just run them.

      I actually prefer these old-school DA/SA triggers because of the crisp single action pull. I carry it cocked, safety on. And if I have a misfire due to bad ammo, I can simply pull the trigger again to fire it in cases of light primer strikes

    As a left hander, thank you for acknowledging our pain, hahaha. Seriously though for most guns i have found being left handed as a benefit. My only gripe is on guns with right hand only safeties. Slide stop, don't care. Mag release, don't care. Safety, gotta be ambi

    I'm glad you said "should be striker fired"... I think hammers are antiquated and unnecessary, not to mention a snag risk. Aesthetically, I agree this is one of the most good looking guns I've seen in a while.

    If you want a striker fired gun that looks and feels similar to the HK P30, the Walther P99 has been filling that role since 1996 The P99 also has a great single / double action trigger with a decocker, and an amazingly short reset.

    The H&K P30 is unquestionably my favorite gun. And I have lots of guns. Just something about it screams "operator." Like the man said, "It's a gun that Batman would carry." My trigger is 4.5 pounds, consistently. I can live with that. My SIG 229 is sub 4 pounds, but the H&K just feels more natural. My Canik TP9 Elite is so scary light I hesitate carrying it. Same as my Walther PPQ in 45acp. The P30 is light, but not too light. And, it makes me look good at the range. Get one, you won't regret it.

  • @slckb0y65
    @slckb0y65 8 років тому +5

    as a Mk23 owner i've said it and i will say it again, the only thing more reliable than an H&K is the fact the sun will rise tomorrow morning, they're build like tanks, the accuracy is out of this world... but their triggers are the absolute worst you can get out of the box and somewhat ruin the enjoyement of all the rest.
    i guess to someone used to a stock glock trigger it's not as bad, but if you ever tried something like a 1911 or a beretta with a quality trigger job, it's like night and day.
    what you get when you buy an H&K is range gun level of accuracy with glock level reliability, but i guess they had to compromise somewhere.
    people like to claim H&K are like the mercedes or the BMW of guns, it is false, they're the further you can get from a luxury experience, what they are, is Marauder armored vehicles.
    the ride will be somewhat bumpy, but they'll get you to hell and back.

      @GENZILLA I own it for almost 10 years, guess how many time it went click rather than bang? 0,ZERO.
      And I've shot everything from cheap army surplus ammo to exotic hollow point and +P.
      I'm not trying to belittle glocks, but they are Honda civic when the mk23 as I said is a freaking tank.
      Glock give you best reliability for the price, h&k give you best reliability... Period.

    • @slckb0y65
      @slckb0y65 4 роки тому

      @GENZILLA can't really talk from personal experience on that as the MK23 is my only H&K gun. but from what i've heard their whole USP line is great and apparently have a much lighter trigger than the MK23.
      again i'm not here to belittle Glock reliability, but i'd like to emphasis the "FOR THE PRICE" part of it.
      i would even go further, glock are super reliable out of the factory, but lot of people then ruin it by adding cheap or crappy after market parts.
      not only that, but glocks age worst than my ex wife. the front of the frame bend from the heat of the barrel after long shooting sessions, the plastic crack at the metal inserts, i've even been told by a cop he once broke the frame of his gun from falling on it during an arrest (abeit, he had filled a finger groove in the trigger guard but still).
      let's be honest, the main reason for Glocks adoption by so many LEO and soldiers is because it's cheap, not because it's the very best. but on top of that it's also lighter than a full metal gun and can hold a lot of rounds, and as i said is very reliable. an improvement over previous service weapon for a lot of them.
      now as a civilian, would i'd rather have a service weapon or the best i can get ? this is the question you have to ask yourself.

    • @slckb0y65
      @slckb0y65 4 роки тому

      @GENZILLA not to excuse the money i've spent on the gun (and it was more than 1400€), but the MK23 is the most reliable gun ever tested by SOCOM.
      sorry but nope, glocks doesn't even come remotly close.

    • @slckb0y65
      @slckb0y65 4 роки тому

      @GENZILLA care to remember me when the first glocks were made ? so your opinion on their reliability is just as dated, just saying ;)
      also, care to show me the gun that outperformed the MK23 in the SOCOM test since ?
      wish you good luck, cause there's none.
      you're trying to make me look like the butthurt one or like someone who got ripped off for having paid so much when a gun 1/3 of the price would have been the same.
      sorry to say, but AR15 guys have more in common with glock guys than me, cause at the end of the day, they're just spending insane amount of money to turn a cheap service weapon into a match grade one more often than not at the cost of reliability.
      what you don't seem to get is that the price H&K ask you isn't for nothing, you pay for the top of the line german (over) engineering.
      you don't get to pick between reliability and match grade accuracy, you get both right out of the box.
      oh and btw, contrary to you, i've actually shot both the MK23 and the glock, so i speak from personnal experience, not from some hearsay on the internet.

    Try operating it with gloves on. Most of us live in areas where winter is a reality, and some of us ride motorcycles when the weather permits. When you have gloves on, you'd better have a pistol you can operate as is. There are no "time outs" for you to take off your gloves. The over sized levers that people complain about really shine when you have gloves on. I love my Glocks, but operating them with gloves on is an absolute PITA. In fact I ended up putting bigger slide releases on almost all of them, and they still suck when wearing gloves. I'm thinking my HK P30 LS will become my new favorite for winter or motorcycle carry.
    The trigger is something to get used to. I will admit it is the one drawback so far, but if you think about a stressful defensive shooting situation at close range, with adrenaline pumping through your veins... a DA/SA trigger makes a little more sense. For a range toy, or pistol competition, probably not, but for the real deal... I would not hesitate to choose this gun as my defensive carry any day.

    To make the P30 trigger much better simply pull out the hammer spring and trim off about 3 rungs. It lightens it up just enough yet still no light strikes. I have had my P30 for over 3 years now so I have time to back this up.

  • @slimygoon9993
    @slimygoon9993 10 місяців тому

    I’ve found that sweeping the mag release with your weak hand on the way down (of course allowing the magazine to drop freely) feels a lot more natural and has increased my reload speed while allowing me to maintain my grip with my strong hand. A good, high grip (which I use) can sometimes make it hard to push the mag release down at first, but with training it becomes soooo smooth

    Missed a lot of features about the pistol. Grove cut into the chamber to clean any dirty brass, notches cut out at the base of the grip to rip out dirty/stuck mags, etc etc.
    - Trigger is a combat trigger.. Meant for duty, not comp. Overtravel is minimal, reset is long to prevent a second panic shot. I'll admit the double action pull is a bit gritty.
    - Pistol does come in striker fired.
    - Try the decocker when re-holstering into OWB - What it was designed for.

    Can't say I agree that the gun should be a striker fire. I love the way HK crafts their hammer guns and I love that they always have a decocker. What I don't understand, is why the decocker bothered him on this gun, when it's the same system as the P2000, where he loved it. All I can figure is his taste changed with time.

  • @BigSaulo

    Went to my local range/gun shop not really looking to get this gun, but I was looking to get a good well rounded gun. Not too big or small that I could conceal carry if I wanted to. There was one there for $650. Never had and HK, because they always cost so much in the past. For the price I thought I would try it. After getting it and playing with it, I really noticed the issues with the trigger. I got the Gray Guns short reset kit, after market nickel sear spring, and 10 lbs hammer spring before ever shooting it. So now, not only does it feels great in the hand, reset is shorten nearly by half, and trigger pull is much nicer, but not a hair trigger that you would have to worry about. So for $750 all in for a really nice HK with custom parts and a reliable of about 90k rounds with no major failures. I see myself hanging on to this gun for a good while.

  • @justaguyx9161
    @justaguyx9161 6 років тому

    I went to my local toy store with my gun permit in hand and a pocket full of cash specifically intending to buy a HK P30 last year. I had ordered it ahead of time and waited 4 months for it to come in. I got to the store and my salesman brought out my new baby. 40 minutes later, after filling out all the paperwork and waiting for my background check to clear, I walked out of the store... with a Walther PPQ, and my pocket still relatively full of cash. Almost the same exact gun, but striker fired, an UNBELIEVABLE trigger break and reset, and only about 1/4 the price of the P30.
    One of my prepper buddies shot my PPQ, and sold his P30 that week. With the money he bought a PPQ, 3 extra mags, an F-ton of ammo, a holster, new tires for his Jeep, and took me out for a few beers.
    Nothing against the P30 but the price (and that god-awful trigger pull).

    • @bradskis81
      @bradskis81 2 роки тому

      Well, a few things. It wasn't designed for Justaguyx91 on the internet. It was designed as a service pistol for German police, with the intent to use the LEM trigger system which eliminates the DA/SA trigger pull weight on the first pull. It wasn't designed as a striker fired, so therefore doesn't work as one it is a hammer fired system. It was designed as a feature update, mainly for ergonomics from the P2000 system. It sounds like you did not know, or were unaware of the details of the gun you ordered.

  • @MaxwellAerialPhotography
    @MaxwellAerialPhotography 9 років тому

    The DA/SA trigger on the P30 is pretty okay, but the LEM trigger is pure awesomeness, it is quite possibly the best DA trigger ever outside of a classic S&W revolver.

    Just a note to about the mag release on HK guns. I find it more ergonomic to use my trigger (index) or middle finger to engage the mag release, than my thumb. I find that I tend to have to break my grip to engage the mag release with my thumb on the HK (where as on a Glock or M&P I don't). However, when I use my middle finger or trigger finger, I don't have to break my grip. I actually find I don't compromise my grip at ALL when using this technique. Just my $.02

    I have a p2000. The finish comes off the frame so easy. The first 30 minutes I wore it on an expressive holster some of the finish wore off. I called HK, and they said it was because the frame is made of super strong metal. Also Colion Noir is right about the ambidextrous slide release. This is the best left handed slide release. It’s true, if I’m going to eat pinto beans for 4 months to afford this gun, I want a decent trigger.

    Some thoughts. See if you can get a hold of a P30 with the Law Enforcement Modification ( LEM) trigger. That gets rid of the shirt-eating spurred hammer, lame DA/SA reset, and weird external decocker. The LEM model actually has a legit reset, so check one out when you can. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

    I can never understand how people can say that a gun is outstanding or fantastic, and then say that the trigger on it is just "ok" or even worse, sub par. The trigger is the most important part of the gun, other than the gun actually functioning. If the gun doesn't work, then it's a bad gun, and if the trigger isn't very good then it's a bad gun. Everything else, like the aesthetics and ergonomics are completely superfluous if the trigger isn't good.

    It is very fascinating to see a kool review like this as a German guy. I guess we are kind of cold hearded to a thing like a gun, espeacialliy if you use it in your job.

    So you thought the PPQ was ugly... but the P30 is beautiful? LOL. I would love some revolver reviews someday, Colion, Smith & Wesson Model 29, Colt Python... Now there's Beauty!!!! Keep up the good work!

    You should get a LEM version, and do the Todd Green Special spring job on it. It's not a "traditional" trigger, but it is quite crisp and tactile.

    You need to install a small speaker and pressure switch behind the trigger that plays an audio clip saying, "Do you even lift?".

    My personal take on the trigger pull is that H&K did a heavier pull due to fine motor skills loss under high stress, also the trigger seems a wide and flatter so it can do well with a high pull rate. See how you like it on the range then go somewhere you can sprint 50 yards and take a 25+ yard shot a few times and see how you like the heavier pull. Now as far as the take up, reset, creep, and non tactile engagement of the trigger...... That sucks.

    Love your videos. Love your review. But if you want to fire, what is in my opinion, the best feeling, shooting, priced handgun. You should shoot the walther ppq. I would really enjoy seeing you do a review of the ppq so I can get your take on it comparatively.

    The felt recoil and muzzle flip on the Walther ppq is way more pronounced than the P30. Follow up shots are a lot more controllable with the HK, for me at least.

    Great vid. The trigger is not as bad as you think. The trigger also comes in other variants so you can pick what type you like.

    Trigger isn't that great BUT that is an actual slide release not just a slide lock, hence fact that it sticks out a bit much like other handguns which have a slide release. The decocker is in the perfect place IF it is used as intended. The slide release again is actually more functional (as in ease of use) than a push button release. It is just that many find it harder to drive a caddy when all we have driven previously are Chevettes.

    @J Thom you have to try an LEM and be comfortable not having an external safety. Once you realize you're carrying a semi auto hand gun with the trigger of a revolver it makes sense. Long and smooth. Better than any Taurus or Ruger DA trigger pull. But I was saying he should try the SA/DA variant. HK's SA/DA isn't hat bad at all.

    Classy review, I obtained the DAO lite LEM this week, it'll be something different then my DA/SA Beretta, Sigs, and my 1911's. Liked your well thought out comments and analogies. Thx.

    The trigger is light and smooth but very long. Certainly not the VP9’s, which is amazing, but hammer fired guns are uber reliable as is this gun and however long the take up is, it is light and smooth and the break is quite crisp.
    I don’t dislike it enough to change it yet. It shoots well. I would prefer the VP9’s but don’t want to sacrifice reliability. You can’t expect a DA/SA gun to feel like a striker fired gun, Besides, It is gorgeous.

    mine only makes sense compared to other pistols if this is the LEM trigger. Do like the gun tho.. its both a performer and a looker.
    Have you slammed a loaded mag into the gun yet? Auto-reload..a built in trait of assertive mag insertion, the slide releases and loads the new round, gets you into the fight just that hair bit faster..

    Had it. Loved it.... slide release, trigger, mag release, and all. I was super accurate with it. Like my MK25 more. And you could get 3 Glock 17s for 1 P30 6 months ago. Way better cost value for far more durable gun.

    I have a Sig 226 TacOps 9mm that had a double/single action trigger too.. The heavy double action is meant to aid in stopping negligent discharges.. The single action trigger on Sigs are outstanding though, mine has around a 4 1/2 lb pull with the SRT, or "short-trigger reset".. It is as perfect as it gets for a defensive handgun.. I agree, the P30 looks to be extremely comfortable, I've never held one so I'm gonna check one out next time I get a chance

    Mr. Noir, really liked the elegant narration of your gun reviews. If you like the P30, Walther PPQ M1 would be the exact polymer striker handgun you enjoy. Not sure if you have tried it.

    Hey Colion, I really like your videos. I've had my P30 in 40cal for a few years & I love it. It does work flawlessly (even with the long trigger pull.) I have noticed that if I shot a lot of ammo through it my trigger finger will get a blister riding on the magazine release. Keep up the good work and fighting the good fight!
