I know you mention bat guano in your video and how worm castings is a close substitute, but I highly recommend getting your hands on some powdered bat guano to sprinkle into their encolosures. I keep rubber duckies (and white duckies) too and I've watched a couple videos saying that using bat guano can speed up their reproduction rates / how quickly they establish and my rubber duckies keep making babies for me (on my 4th gen now after keeping them for 8 months or so) :) btw I love your videos, keep up the great work

Hey Dayyan, I would actually not sterilize the wood. Microbial activity, specifically that of fungus, is very important. Wood decaying fungus--often categorized into white rot, brown rot, and soft rot--break down polymeres and allow the wood to be palatable for the isopods. Enzymes they produce deconstruct the cellulose, hemicellulose, and (in the case of white rot) the lignin, which provide immense nutritional value to the isopods. Soaking the wood for 48 hours or more, quarantining for at least a week (I do so for as long as possible), then repeating the soaking process is a great way to get rid of the macro life. The main concerns are: (1) predatory creatures like centipedes, mites, and spiders; (2) creatures that will compete with the isopods like other species and millipedes; and (3) pathogens. The first soaking ensures that number one and two are killed, the second soaking makes sure that, in the rare scenario osmosis didn't get to the eggs, newly hatched critters are killed, and the quarantining makes sure any pathogens don't make it (note: the risk for pathogens in very small). It probably doesn't matter that much though, have a good one :)

@@Reptiliatus You can also freeze the wood as many fungus', especially those climatized to the weather of the north, undergo dormancy or can survive in the form of spores and sclerotia. Though I have not tried it myself, I've seen others do so and (after some time) the wood had become slightly warm to the touch, a sign of decomposition.

Sowbugs are distinct in that they have two prominent tail like appendages (uropods) and cannot roll into a ball. Pill bugs on the other hand, can roll up into a ball and have no visible appendages besides antennae. This behavior has earned them the common name “roly-pollies”.

Of course we'd love an isopod tour! I only have two species, kept together- Armadillidium vulgare and some Trichorina tomentosa. The Pillbugs are tough as NAILS and a great intro. the Dwarf Whites live more under the soil so they work as a good team with the Pillbugs to clean in the bioactive snake enclosure, but most of my isopods live together in their Culture tank habitat with lots of leaves, soil, flake soil and a chunk of cork, and a lil peace garden of a tiny buddha and a little fake tree- just to make it nice for me to look at.
The Pillbugs are mad for protein. They like dried bugs & shrimp, snake sheds, quality fish flakes, and will strip down an entire pinkie in 48 hours. They get fed springtail diet and veggies too.

All of that is a long way of saying that I'm into watching it all, and more isopod vids would be welcome. ISOPODS!!!
    First time commenting hello!
Admiring them vicariously(edit: vicarious not precarious 😂 maybe the fact I'm tempted to keep them again makes it dangerous?) through high-quality videos from creators like yourself! Thank you sir!
My parents(I'm a working adult but their apartment their rules...) had me get rid of all my cultures, 5 shoebox-sized bins, sometime last year and I've missed them since. Retaliating by getting LOTS of isopod plushies...
They're all adorable in my eyes, but I do put the Cubaris sp. "Red Panda King" I had up there for biased reasons.
QOTD: Porcellio scaber "Lava" or Porcellio werneri, the former because that specific morph was one of my newest additions before I lost my 'pods... While roly-polys are cool, I also love ones that don't conglobate like those! Otherwise go with your favorite(s)!
