I played as a keeper untill college and I don't see a problem with that. Sure we're not 10% the keeper raya is, but I don't even think you need to have ever played as one to know raya didn't do the best job there@@enidtaric3679
@enidtaric3679 he was a decent keeper at a amateur level (high school soccer). He was a backup, but did play a decent amount. He does have some authority to speak here. In European terms he's probably played at low level non-league as a backup.
Someone in my family, at 75+ years old, while watching live said that even he could score past Raya in that shootout, not because he'd hit the ball with any meaningful power, but because Raya was basically already on the floor before the run up was done xD Raya's incredible but shootouts just aren't for him, he basically put a huge neon sign up telling everyone which way he was going each time!
@@lost1head The penalty save at Atalanta was fantastic, but actually rewatch the Porto shootout. He always dives to his left hoping that the strikers gonna put it there... and fair enough it can absolutely work. But against Man U? He was pulling the trigger on the dives waaaay too early. Even if someone initially wanted to put it to his left they had time to change their mind.
@@ganaed Ah, but they're asking me to recall my opinion of a shootout from 10 months ago that I didn't catch live, so, no, I didn't think that immediately after that shootout. It's okay to think he's a good keeper whilst critiquing his ability at a shootout, especially after this most recent one Heck, I have Raya in my dream team xD
"tbf if he goes the right way he probable saves them" this is almost as good as "you want to start from the front, because it means the other 19 guys are behind you"
As a goalkeeper, Raya was signalling which way he was going to go 5 business days before the man utd players kicked the ball. And he dived 3 times to his left for 3 times in a row . I feel like after going that way 2 times, he tried to reverse phycology by going it 3 times. He wasn't great in that shootout.
Tbf going same side in a row can be very effective, specially if you're getting close. Most players when nervous default to the opposite of the dominant foot anyways, the most comfortable place to strike it, more prevalent in lower leagues too. So that part I don't blame him, is the obvious body language that ends him
Thing is, you just KNOW the ManU players were going back and telling each other that he was diving too early, so if they just took a bit of pace off he'd already have gone one direction and they could just pass it into the goal once they saw which side he'd vacated. Arsenal could've swapped in an outfield player and he'd have done better at these PKs.
He actually also did this in that UCL game against Bayern with the Kane penalty. He dived so so early. I think a tactic coaches tell players is with Raya, just delay your shot for as long as you can.
He also did that against Atalanta vs. Rattegui. He managed to save that one because Rattegui was looking down the whole time, and the followup save was beautiful. But I couldn't help but notice just how early he dived.
Being in stands and watching this was excruciating. He's a class keeper, but that was actively the worst keeper performance in a shootout I've ever seen.
As somebody who was also a goalkeeper until I was 18, and also managed to get myself a fractured cheekbone, I can confirm, he fucked up. Raya did what I used to do, but there was a slight difference between the two. He commits so early, and I used to as well, but as I shifted my weight to one side, the same way Raya has, as soon as that weight planted, I would shift my extremely low center of gravity, and throw myself the other way, easily getting to the post, to purposely throw the striker off cue. Worked at least 75% of the time, if it wasn't a save, the sudden change would cause them to mis-hit it entirely
I have a theory. Because Raya is only 6ft with t-rex arms, he needs to dive earlier to get to the corners. And I reckon he was basing his dives simply off research of the takers, not actually reacting to what they were doing live.
Surely he is really scared so he tries to commit and go early rather than play the mind games. I play GK and I fake one way and go the other for pens in this situation
Put Emi Martinez in goal and I wonder how Arsenal’s last two years might have gone. I also wonder how Aston Villa’s last two years would have been with a different gk. It’s not even about the saves, just the intimidation. Exactly right
It's funny how Arsenal keep fumbling with their goalkeeper decisions. Ramsdale would have done better at penalties than Raya did. Important moments like this decide cup competitions
People who think Goalkeepers need a full weekends notice to start their dive simply don't actually get how important the concept of being "explosive" is to the fundamentals of being a goalkeeper. Weather you're coming off your line or making a routine save, the ability to plant your foot and explode through the movement is essential to Goalkeeping and is taught to children. If you've only played in goal, but never received any specialist training as a goalkeeper, you simply don't actually understand the position and what it entails.
It was weird to watch. He actually has been decent at penalties so far in his Arsenal career. Just weird that he went so early literally every time. Almost like his timing we just off the entire time
After playing in tier 3 in Portugal, stopped playing and restarted in Saturday league in London at 29 with 10 extra kilos, even I don’t do this! Come on man 😂😂
You should always just react as a keeper, then you can save almost any penalty that is not well taken. A perfectly struck penalty is almost unsaveble anyway , even if you guess the right way.
The only reason for going this early is that’s the way the set piece coach has told him to go. All the praise they get they’ve got to take some flack as well
Another horrific penalty shootout in the all ireland inter provential series final between Ulster and Connacht It went to sudden death with both teams only scoring one penalty In the first round of sudden death they both missed again on the 2nd round connacht missed again and ulster won it So in 14 penalties 3 were scored! and it wasnt like the keapers were amazing or anything they made one or two saves each but the penalties were so bad. Only excuse the players might have is that penalty shoutouts have only been in GAA for a few years
you know dude played at a good HS team when he talks about his goal keeping coach lol. most schools in the US still have a PE teacher that has to ask the ref about the rules during the games
Agree with Z here,Raya just needs to dive right when the player hits the shot because 100% some players do look at the goalkeeper to see where he is going if he goes before the shot
He’s def banking on guessing the right way, going a stride before the shot. It’s giving him the leeway to dive all the way until ball hits the post and in. It’s a terrible strat. Like you said, Bayindir made it all the way to the post perfectly
Loris Karius five mins after THAT Champions League final performance, with concussion, would have performed better than Raya in this shootout. Honestly, that performance should spell the end of Raya's career, it was THAT BAD.
I cannot believe you skipped the worst one. Raya takes TWO FULL STEPS and yoro is still stepping into his shot. I swear to got if the shootout kept going raya would jump as the United player is placing the ball on the spot
First of all, being goalkeeper in highschool and having injury does not make you competent to talk about pro goalkeeping. Raya is a goalkeeper on a smaller side, and if your "coach" in highschool tought you something you should know. Smaller goalkeepers dive earlier so they could cover the side of the goal, if he stays on the line even if he knows the side where the ball is going he is not going to get there. Pausing the video and analyzing frame by frame is easy. Talking about Martinez's left foot still on the ground, do you really think that you or any goalkeeper in the world is watching the steps of the run up? Come on buddy don't expose yourself. Keep your work, i love it. Keep talking about weird shit in football around the world, just stop doing this kind of analysis because you sound dumb to people who actually played pro football.
I love how Z, being someone who was a goalkeeper, sounds like he's *personally offended* by Raya's performance
Zealand goalkeeper? It's like me calling myself swimmer. Getting into the pool doesn't make me swimmer.
He just claims he was a keeper so he doesn't have to explain why he was never running

Thats probably why he doesn't start as GK for Spain and Unai Simon does

I was a small goalie growing up. 5'11 with long reach 6'4. Patrick Bonner and Patrick Roy my heroes when I was a kid
Mine was Angelo Peruzzi back in the day with Juventus, the guy was smaller than me, I think 1m80, but a magnificent goalkeeper.
