avenginggoddess good to know! I’m definitely missing a lot of products, it’s annoying a lot of the brands used back then aren’t being produced anymore :/
Yes, "I'm just going to put a thin layer of hairspray" made me giggle! We literally destroyed the ozone layer with the excessive amount of Aquanet use! I remember carrying a purse size bottle in middle school in my purse, and at recess/between classes, all the girls were in the bathroom reapplying hairspray to keep our bangs up! Thank you for putting out this video, I appreciate the hard work and research, but I'd say next time it's a lot easier to use rollers and crimping irons to achieve the look. Also, the "cobra" wings on the sides of your face was achieved by taking a round brush, pulling the out from your head, spraying with a ton of hairspray, and then blowing drying the hairspray dry with the brush still holding it in place.
I'm 46. I've watched numerous "authentic 80s hairstyles" tutorials. You all are so cute. I enjoy watching all the young ladies attempt the decade. Lol. Keep making videos.
Good tutorial! We used to "palm" our bangs to get them to stand up in the 80's. Using the palm of the hand, rub your bangs on small circles in one direction. This teases the underside of the bang. Now, using a hair pick, lift the bangs and spray it in place. Hit it with heat to dry the spray.
Randy Rhoads Nope! Your hair won’t catch on fire, that is/was the technique. Low heat for a few seconds to bake in the hairspray. Your hair will be crispy AF, but it helps the feathered wings have volume.
Not even gonna lie, I had the straight up Warrant, Guns N Roses, Skid Row mullet hair back in high school and I kinda wanna do it again once my hair grows back out. Lol you rock!
I always used a curling iron, sectioned my bangs like you did, curled the top half back and bottom half down. Teased the top so it made a huge solid wall standing up and the bottom bangs were a perfectly curled row, then sprayed the crap outta of it with hairspray!! 😂 We also did the teased out dog ears, ahhhhh the days, good times!
It's amazing how you managed to get a legit hairstyle without using the curling irons we used to. Definitely need one for the stray straight pieces though. And you want a hairstyle to stay? We used Aqua Net on dry hair...and a ton of it. You know you got it right when you go outside and your hair doesn't move. Your base style was important and also legit. Can't have proper 80s big hair without layers and curls. Use your brush and hair spray to wing out the sides.
Stef Chanel thank you!! Still in the process of getting a curling iron and more styling products, I’ve practiced a bit more since this video and have gone through about 4 cans of aqua net LOL
The accordion technique is a really good one! Reminds me of how we were taught to crimp hair in beauty school, just on a larger scale. We would wrap hair around an open hair pin or bobby pin, in a figure 8, and hold the flat iron over it for a few seconds, and voila! crimped hair! This is so much better because you don't have the heat damage! xo
@@glitterwave80s how exactly did you cut your hair? especially your bangs?? i really need some bangs like that because my hair is literally so heavy and it’s weighing down on the rest of my hair. :( it’s hard to do anything with it. i like my length, but some bangs exactly like that, would be a game changer for me.
Out of all the ways I've tried to curl my hair without heat or a styling tool, I NEVER would have thought of the accordion thing. Imma try that thank you dog bless :D xxx
Put your curl gel on towel dried hair & some aussie sprunch spray and after you scrunch it real good blow dry it upside down. Lol that's what I used to do. I had a crimper thing back in the 80s like yours too lol we did our whole head with it. Oh & to get those high bangs we you get a brush or a pick and hold it up & spray it with hair spray & run the blow dryer on it until it was stuck that way.
You look straight out of a time machine XD I remember a few women looking like that still in the 90s… I'm sad I missed the whole decade, having been born on the last year of the 80s :/ I used to hate the fashion of this era, the colors were too flashy and clashed with each other, but now I'm mid-30s I LOVE IT. Too bad I'm too lazy to try and emulate a look like this lol

His videos give an awesome look into real day to day life back in 80s. I love watching his videos because it takes me back to my early childhood years back in the mid-late 80s.
I think this is the first video I watched of Gilber's collection of home movies that I found on UA-cam. I came came across his video/channel while casually looking up movies 80's home movies between 1985 to 1989. I felt those were the years when most people probably had a VCR player to record or watch movies from VHS tapes. Very Pretty that looks so good I miss the 80s best days ever for me ❤️A hair dryer would also work that’s what alot of us used in the 80s I grew up in the 80s ❤️🙂
Looking quite authentic! You should curl the bangs under with a barrel iron, then hairspray out by the temples using heat from blow dryer. Also, try the putty in the temple area & use heat on that too.
Would love a tutorial on how to get that haircut!! Do you cut it yourself? I show pictures to my hairdresser but it never turns out how I ask, so if u want to show us how you cut it, we'd all love it! ♥ 80's are the best!!! Great channel ♥
I loved this! The time it took for this really brings me back. I would put hot rollers in at night and wake at dawn to achieve the look before school. I knew I needed a good hour to complete. Half the time I would cry cuz it wouldn’t go right lol. Used lots of rave spray and I used that studio L’Oréal but the curl spray!
The two tools of choice was a crimping iron and the smallest barreled curling iron (the one I used) you could find. And two products gel and mousse. Then you tease it wherever you want the volume. Spray spray spray.
Thanks for the video and comments! I'm wanting to do a Nancy cosplay from Stranger things but her season 4 hair is REALLY big and curly! Im in love with it. Was going to buy a wig but i wanna do it authentic
My hair by far took the longest… but it wasn’t too hard. Brush and spray out the sides holding it in place with the brush while waving the other hand to help fry the spray, then curling iron all my bangs curled under, separate a thin layer at the front to stay curled under and covering the forehead and the rest were brushed up and back while spraying to achieve the feathered curled stand up poof. This was later converted into the stand up straight bangs with tease to the side and layer into the side gil look lol. That was easier because no curling iron. Just hold, spray, tease the top into the perfect draped drop to the side. :) Then I went full Mohawk.. :D that was always easier to stand up on day 2 or more. Freshly washed hair required a ton of spray where as day or 3 day old hair just needed to be re soaked with spray until pliable and reformed and held with comb or hands while a hairdryer dried the spray. Repeat until hair achieves rock like status-in more than one way :)

Vintage Princess Jellyfish I looked in the mirror with a pair of safety scissors and did it myself 😂 I would either print out a picture for the hairdresser, or ask for a long shag, or just short layers at the top and longer as they go down. Hope this helps 🙌🏻
I was born in 1982. I remember back when I was little some teenage girls did the french braid back in the 80s. What looks really 80's with a french braid is if you curl your bangs with curling iron and then teas the bangs. I agree with Glitter Wave I think it will look wavy/crimped when the braid is taken down.
I wanted to clarify that I didn't mean to put hair in French braids to get the curly perm hair effect. I ment like an actual French Braid as a hair style.
