- Ever been in a Stravinsky Firebird Suite rehearsal and the trombonist forgets to trill? Have you even heard a trombone trill for as long as Stravinsky makes them? Please fill me in on your hot takes in the comment section.

Of course who else but Stravinsky to push an instrument to its technical limits
Yeah if stravinsky was still alive, bassoons would sound 3 octaves higher
@@me_is_hobo lmao dont they have like 5 octaves already
@@cristhiancamarena9534 “Alright, bassoons, make sure you play the piccolo cues at measure 36”
Richard Strauss
Eat your f*king cereal
The “5, 6, and” countoff
It is in 7/4.
whiplash reference???!
@@matthewcline8580 No the tune is in 7/4 at spots.
@@JFroTheMusician yeah, thats correct, but the piece "whiplash" is also in 7/4, and Terrence Fletcher's countoff for that is also “5, 6, and”. I don't think it's a coincidence Timo said it that way, especially if you put them side by side.
@@matthewcline8580 plus the way he shaped his hands
I didn’t even know trombones could trill :0 -me, an ignorant clarinetist
Same dude
On trombone you can trill by two different ways. On a trigger trombone, you can use the valve (or trigger) to get a trill effect. I used this technique when playing Lebedev's Concerto in One Movement. Then you have the lip trill (what he's doing in the video). Significantly harder as it requires endurance, speed, flexibility, and precision on partials (when we play different notes using the same fingering) of the trombone.
@@zzUchihaxx you absolutely should not use the valve to trill.
Clarinets is best
@@Snookbone Said who?
I play both Trombone and French Horn, and I still don't know how to lip trill hahaha I tend to just wiggle the F trigger or the valves and that's it hahaha
That’s how it’s done, man. Fake it till you make it. Plus the horn mouthpiece is microscopic so a lip trill sucks
@@adgalaxy234_6 still bigger than a trumpet mouthpiece and some people lip trill on those
I play trumpet and french horn, it sucks to trill on both
on you horn try just doing a trill on 1 and 2. it is a g to an a trill!
@@charliepeterson8397 Valve trills is all I could do (for now hahaha I know that the more I practice, I can get there eventually... hopefully) but yeah I still suck at my lip slurs hence that needs practice (although for some reason, I could lip slurs better on my Trombone than on my horn even though horn is my main lmao what)
They gave it to the bones cuz the poor first horn's heart is still racing after the solo and any additional stress might just break them.
My favorite part is how the entire orchestra fits in this room, and everyone except a single trombone player is invisible
Me on my French horn when I can’t find the right shelf
I was about to say that
that is mad impressive dude, been playing for 11 years and trilling is the one thing I've never been able to get down
hey I've also been playing for 11 years! and trilling is also the one thing I've never been able to get down!
Remington exercises. But do it like your glissing by buzzing. Free buzzing can help strengthen your lips to do this. Been playing 10 years and I can trill. You can do it too, just some good quality practice!
Oh, Brad Edwards lip slurs. It's also a fantastic book for learning flexibility and trills.
Tell me you don't practice flexibility without telling me you don't practice flexibility...
@@brassholio no
The joke is that trombones "cant trill" cuz they just got a slide. Yet he did it
Yo!! Stravinsky's Firebird! I absolutely adore it!
its amazing. my marching band's omea show is centered around it
@@gswiggy ours was too!
wait we can trill?
Now that’s impressive 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Literally had my lesson in that room in BSOM last week😂
This guy was a counselor at my summer camp a few years back
He conducted Octet, he practiced Pulcinella, and now the Firebird. I wanna hear the rite of spring next.
My mouth hurts just listening to this. Nice.
I was a trumpet player, but Oh. My. GOD. Mad respect to your ability, that is amazing on any brass instrument but I suspect it's even harder on trombone.
I can't speak for trombone, but trying to do it on horn is pretty difficult too. To be honest, I think it's difficult on any brass instrument because it takes such a high level of control.
I love that he conducts like Fletcher from Whiplash.
I'm a clarinetist and I did not even know trombones can trill until now. Thanks.
0:31 me when I don’t oil so often my slide so it stick just like that :3
haha I didn't even realize
oh damn they have to do that on firebird? trumpets never have to pull that shit. that's ridiculous. props.
Sick trills bro
0:16 I like the whiplash reference
We are playing this in my marching band show!! :D Stravinsky very cool
Yuhhhh we played that for our marching band show two years ago, although our arrangement didn't have the trombone trills, it would have been kinda cool of they kept that in
trombone trills are extremely hard to get down consistently
Hilarious for trombone to think it’s part of the melody
I can do that on a French horn. It’s never intentional though
🤣 I feel your pain
he really forgor💀
Doing a field show with this song so hearing this caught me off guard
OMG WE PLAYED THIS FOR MY MARCHING BAND
Yess!! Stravinsky’s: The firebird 🔥🔥
That's fucking beautiful!
Wow, really really nice playing. Also, funny! :-)
That’s the song for part 4 of my marching show this year
As Tim’s former section leader, I can tell you he NEVER forgot to trill. Ever
Very clean
good tone, dude
I have yet to master the art of trill
5,6, and gave me whiplash vibes
Zoltan Kiss vibes
Mnozil Brass definitely an inspiration for me in general
If anyone can hear that over the orchestra I might think it's worth it :P
Clarinets: Presses pinky up and down rapidly
Just open and close the spit valve really fast
holy shit that's good
I play French horn, and I have a trill in the song we are playing, it’s hilarious
bruh if stravinsky was still alive he would probably find a way for violins to play a 6 octave scale
Funny thing is violins can already do that by using subharmonics and artificial harmonics. It’s really cool but, for the violinist’s sake, shouldn’t be made into a common technique lol
@@btat16 wait what
lmao I knew how to play a 5 octave scale with harmonics but 6 octaves????? Huh
@@jimiyu. I recommend listening to Mari Kimura’s music with her subharmonic playing. Her music isn’t for everyone, but the technique is nonetheless impressive! She essentially uses bow pressure to “cancel out” some vibrations of the string, leading to a harmonic series that goes down in pitch and not up. She’s hit mid-upper cello range with her playing!
Just flexing on us at this point
How was your slide staying in 2nd position when you moved your hand?🤔0:31
What song is this I really like it
I didn't even know this was possible wth
good thing he's a trombonist and not a conductor
At my school they call trombone players tromboners
I just performed this song like a few weeks ago.
Which version of the Firebird is this? The trombone usually starts trilling after two measures of the melody after the “key change,” at least, in the version that I'm used to hearing (1919).
Wait is this song firebird? We’re playing this as our show in marching band this season lol
0:32
Who holding onto the slide exactly?
How do do that trill? That sounds awesome!
It's hard to say. I, myself, am barely starting to get the hang of it, so it just takes months of practice.
But it sounds epic tho
I am a beginner trombonist and this scares me
I think it's kinda hard to trill on a trombone.
Not really. Just requires practice.
Jesus trills are so hard nd u made it look easy
fuck our concert band did a Suite arrangement of the Firebird and we didn't have a trombone - you're telling me i missed THIS!? heartbroken.
Do you know what I do I just shake the trombone
So nobody was gonna tell me we can lip trill???
I had to find this out 8 years in by MYSELF???
What happens when you mix Smetana's Má Vlast: V. Tábor near the end of the movement with The Simpsons theme?
Is that firebird? Our marching band is doing this piece rn, we were actually going to go to our first contest of the season today but it got cancelled :/
What is trilling
What are the chances we just played Firebird this past Tuesday lol
Bro how do you even accomplish this
Ugh firebird.
Why is it that every trombonist has a certain skill that they are the best at, there’s Timo, extremely good at trills, there’s people like Josh Holcomb who is amazing at flutter toungue, and I’m pretty good at Crescendo and decrescendo, especially dynamics like fp
I almost played Firebird but covid fucked it up
If you don't mind me asking, what type of trombone do you play
Tenor trombone with f attachment
i play trupent
Hi
Majer
5 6 and
Crispy lip slurs my guy
Whiplash reference lol
WHAT THE FFFFUCK!?
I hate lip trills so much
Isn't he starting the trill two bars early?
That's what I thought too
1. actually the trombone does play the melody for the first two bars after the modulation
2. you just made this to show off your lip trills didn't you
?
that aint right how you have to play 5 sharp yes sig and play a high trill and you use just ur mouth to do the trill. why you flexin? XD respect
Hahaha 5-6 and
I thought this was called a shake and trill was impossible on trombone without a trigger
A shake/tremolo is just a type of trill. Specifically a trill between two notes that are more than a tone apart
Day 69 of commenting. Nice
No you
good video but why does your face look like youre about to cry?
Major cringe from Stravinsky smdh
