Percussionists: "We are actually highly talented and well trained professional musicians who mastered a plethora of different percussion instruments. We play a vital role in classical music" People: "Haha, hammer go boom!"
Well, Mahler had already used every single other instrument in the percussion section, and there was nothing else left that could make a loud enough noise, so he had to use a giant hammer. You were expecting he would use maybe a glockenspiel?
Half the fun is watching Bernstein conduct this. Say what you will about him, but his passion showed both in his music and his body language, and you can really see that as he cues the Hammerschlag. Do listen to Lenny's complete recording of the 6th, it is awesome.
no there were three originally but then mahler took out the third one in the final edition of the score to build up to a silent pain, when you expect the third hammer blow instead you are pained with silence. there are only two hammer blows. personally, i wish that the third hammer blow could be restored
I just looked up the location of the deleted third hammer blow. It's kinda weird ... it doesn't feel like a very interesting place to put it. (it's at the place near the end where the the harp finishes a long upward glissando, and then the whole orchestra plays the chord of A major)
@@ruanpingshan It's actually a very interesting place to put it. The A->a shift is the theme permeating the entire 1st mvt, and this is reintroduced by the hammer blow.
MultiMandarijn Are you really? Good for you! Thanks for having the courage and sharing that with us. It's probably such a relief to finally stop hiding in the closet.

There is something super comical about that giant hammer. Perfect for a scene of Looney Toones in an orchestra setting.
"Hey, what instrument do you play?" "The hammer."
