This has to be the most informative documentary I have ever watched in my life, has filled me alot of info I could have never found interesting to read, very organized and smooth presentations, an entire 5 decades of history summarized in an hour and a half, makes you glued to the screen throughout.
Watching many documentaries and reading books and articles on war and conflicts has shown me that those in power see people as mere regrowing numbers, their suffering and murder is insignificant to them; achieving their plans through coups, war, inciting internal conflicts at the expense of slaughtering hundreds of thousands of people is unmatchably more important
It goes on to this very day, The United States versus Russia. Ravaging Ukraine's land, wiping out a generation of it's men, they can't even use economic ideals as an excuse. Only economic control.
I’m a retired U.S. Military veteran having served with a Reconnaissance Squadron in the European & Middle East Theatre’s. I also worked for the NRO for a period of time. I found this video to be very informative. My only input would have been to add the Geneva Convention Treaties of 1949 in your timeline. Since this documentary had a lot to do with war I would have thought these treaties to be of significance. ✌🏽
I know most of this stuff in this documentary. I lived through much of it. This is the first time I've see a documentary about the "whole" cold war in one place and so well articulated too.
I sent your channel to my Social studies teacher and she ended up showing it to my class and now my class enjoys social studies so I’m no longer that weird kid who enjoys the subject. Thanks for that.

Indeed, making the bestest cold war documentary must have been a task with a high volume of required necessary research to complete and structure out in a comprehensive way. Managing all that to a very respectable degree like you've done truly proves your ability to create documentaries and just how much best they are. It is therefore not an exaggeration to say that this best cold war documentary's quality has a significant rift between the second most bestest best cold war documentary. Sincere thanks and hope to you from me.

You can imagine how confused and excited all of us poly sci majors were that graduated between 88 and 92. Textbooks could not keep up, let alone the professors the foreign affairs publications. What a time, what a time.
love how it was extremely concise, managing to cover each issue in 2-3 minutes while highlighting the most important things and managing to convey the meaning and significance of the discussed topics. you managed to explain in 3 minutes what others cannot in 20. a great video, thank you.
Excellent documentary. The outro was unexpectedly stirring and emotional regarding times I wasn't even alive for. Such a dramatic and intriguing part of world history, the Cold War. The same could be said of the Roman Empire's history, but the Cold War condensed the political drama of a thousand ancient years into a few harrowing decades.
I get the same feeling as I wasn't born during most of this, (1978) it's mad to think the world you were born into was almost destroyed before we got here.
This is by far the most interesting thing I’ve ever seen on UA-cam.must watch for everyone out there who struggles to understand the world order we live in.
It is not hard to imagine what the world would be like if the superpowers had spent all that money, manpower, energy, and resources toward humanitarian pursuits and constructive sciences rather than on the pursuits of war.
Wouldve been wasted either way. The world would likely be in a worst state if that the case. Pampering people makes them weak and dependant, brutal environments makes people strong and reasourceful.
Unfortunately, that's not the world we live in... Every one thinks of Hitler when you think about evil but Joseph Stalin was even worse and had more power. God only knows what the world would be like had Russia or Germany created the Atomic bomb first
My parents used to talk about how they felt and dealt with living during the Cuban Missle Crisis. They described how frightened they were and had prepared for the end of the world. This is such a great video outlining such pivotal moments in world history.
even thought we had very detailed history classes and i got okay grades, this is the first time I'm learning about it in english and understanding cold war full length and complexity better.
well the cold world isn't something that you can simply define. its basically the political atmosphere of the 20th century. America became victorious after WW2, and because of this, they dominated the world economically. Soviets had dominated their part of the world. The two countries naturally have different goals. But due to lack of information, lack of internet, lack of knowledge, etc people were very unaware of basic information. Now, in 2021, the cold war will never be possible because the citizens of the world are too educated about world affairs. What people never talk about is all the times the USA and Soviet Union actually worked together. It's more interesting to hear about the problems, issues, and disagreements...but there were also times when the USA and Soviet Union worked together. Keep in mind, the USA and Russia always had a trade relationship/citizens visiting each other's countries, despite the proxy wars and propaganda. Soviet Union took out leaders that didn't fit their agenda..as well as USA. People were too fearful of another World War. Thank God human beings are interconnected and no longer so nationalistic! The Internet has made the world so much smaller; for the most part, we all view ourselves as brothers and sisters, despite borders.
This is my favorite war time era because it shapes the world as we know it today. It still affects us today, in the form of Cuba and the embargo that is still standing.
Tears, smiles, amazement as I travelled on this well documented time machine. Straightforward, minimal dramatics, and factual. I remember the Berlin Wall, my college got a piece of it for historical reference as an art centerpiece. I remember all of it.
Formal education, elementary through post graduate, is no longer as thorough, truthful and unbiased as it was when I studied (1962-1981). Videos like this one, with the presenter available for questions, are more illuminating than most of the courses I slogged through just for the grade. Thank you.
this is incredible! I'm a huge history buff. Especially war history. The cold war is something I admittedly didn't know so much about. After watching this a few times I feel like a damn expert lol. Very well done!
It's very bizarre that the French lost there country to the Nazis, but immediately after WW2 the French start demanding there overseas territories (Vietnam, Algeria). While England, The Dutch and the United States granted independence to overseas countries, the French insisted on keeping there's. How arrogant can you get?
Might be unpopular, but had Germany been run by anyone but an ideological regime bent on getting rid of others and their way of life in the name of racial superiority and extreme nationalism, I'd say the French government (not people) got what they deserved by being occupied. France was the one that insisted on making the Versailles Treaty harsh as possible, pretty much guaranteeing war in 15-20 years. Even the Brits were trying to compromise post WW1, despite Germany breaking many rules. They were harsh, pompous, imperialists and we can't forget that. Just look at how their "former" colonies are doing today vs other nations' former territories.
Im 3 years late but at the point of WW2 and 1, what overseas territories did the USA have and give up/lose? I didn't even know they had any to lose especially at this time.
Sadly, schools only provide a distraction, beyond language & mathematics, their only usefulness, is socialising with other kids of a similar age & interest's. Real life skills learning, doesn't start until we leave school.
He doesn't understand capitalism or communism, lesso so that either can be "at war"with the other. You learned nothing. Just the phrase "the soviet union would fare better" is laughable. They skipped over a couple million deaths from collectivism.
Well done on sticking as best you could to facts and staying away from editorializing. Not perfect, but probably the most “journalistic” effort I’ve seen in 10+ years. I appreciate not being propagandized for over an hour on real history in the last 100 years. Thank you 🙏👌🤘🙌🏻
Reid, since you apparently have the expertise to qualify this documentary as "not perfect" - as in compared to your perfect expertise, right? - I invite you to list every single flaw, specifying the timestamp of the flaw, explaining the flaw, and including links to the relevant primary sources demonstrating that what you claim is correct (primary sources are the only kind of sources an expert uses - but who am I to tell you, the perfect expert?). Any expert knows how to do this: you, the perfect expert, can therefore do it in no time. Otherwise, it's hard for anyone with just basic education (i.e. PhD-level, which is indeed basic compared to your perfect expertise) to take your comment seriously.
@@MetteC5 I didn’t say I was an expert or say it was flawed. I said it was good and that I appreciated not being propagandized in this documentary (as compared to others I’ve viewed). So as an expert on criticizing comments, point out the flaws in what I really said versus your critique of what you think I said. It’s there for easy comparison.
The only thing I meant by not perfect is the very few times the creator had to, or chose to editorialize for brevity or because you can’t lay out every side to every event with every interpretation without making a story unmanageable.
@@historybuffguy Ok, fair enough. It's deeply concerning (though hardly surprising) that the lack of propaganda in a documentary is such a rare thing in the US that it needs to be mentioned. A documentary is, BY DEFINITION, not propaganda. In other words, if propaganda is included in a given video, it CANNOT qualify as a documentary.
Superb documentary. As another viewer said, very concise, objective, and the topics covered were so broad that it would be so easy to get lost in the weeds or go down the rabbit hole of a particular subject, but that didn't happen at all, and you somehow covered just about everything in an hour and a half. If this is the quality of this channels productions, then my new subscription will definitely be worth it👍
This by far one of the best historical documentaries ever. I'm well versed on 20th century history but i learned a few things i didn't know previously. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
That Russian commander in the sub during the Cuban missile crisis that incident should be made into a movie that would be absolutely fantastic can you imagine the commander refusing the order to launch the missiles what the atmosphere was like in that sub the yelling and screaming..Someone should make this into a movie.
I hope that a nuclear ☢️ holocaust also never happens in my son’s lifetime!Because my mum and dad grew up with the threat of a nuclear war like the Cuban 🇨🇺 missile crisis when they were kids in 1962!
Thank you for such an informative documentary. As a 70's baby, I can honestly say that this was the first time that the cold war era made any sense to me. Well done.

Exactly; from both sides: capitalists and communists alike. The people are the ones who suffer the most by being tools for the oppressors to
It goes on to this very day, The United States versus Russia.

@@tylercaswell3366 By that logic, you aren't human because I said so.
I already know this will be the best cold war documentary ever. Thx for sharing it.
Having lived through all of this, being one of those kids diving under desks at school, I can say this is the very best wrap-up of the events that have so shaped our world I have ever seen...Very well done, liked & subbed...
I write this comment to sincerely relay my thanks for this best cold war documentary.
This man dropped a serious gem, and on April 1st, what a Chad!
He's a mad lad!
Dude is pretty rad.
I am indeed a chad
This is not just a great insight into the Cold War, but a great overview of the world's politics after WW2.
Kind of amazing that we managed to get through this era without a nuclear war. It is definitely interesting to learn about.
Reading this comment now is like hmmmm yeah
This comment didn't age well 😂
Well then...😂
We never got out of it smh men have caused all this destruction something really wrong we need more female leaders
@@michaeljoubert7541 even before the Ukrainian Russian was we never got out of this sickening situation
Dude my world history teacher has not taught me anything this whole year- iv had to rely on documentary’s on YT. Your channel has helped me so much for studying for my finals ❤️
I've lost count of how many times I've watched this documentary. I enjoy the photos, the history, and most of all the music. Very well crafted.
You can imagine how confused and excited all of us poly sci majors were that graduated between 88 and 92. Textbooks could not keep up, let alone the professors the foreign affairs publications. What a time, what a time.
One of the best written and presented docs on probably one of the toughest subjects to cram into an hour and a half program. Subscribed.
Born in 1954 I grew up and served in the military during the cold war. Now I don't know which one is worse, the cold war or the banker surf system.
I loved history in high school, and I forgotten so much from it. This helped remember why I got a kick out of learning the past.
love how it was extremely concise, managing to cover each issue in 2-3 minutes while highlighting the most important things and managing to convey the meaning and significance of the discussed topics. you managed to explain in 3 minutes what others cannot in 20. a great video, thank you.
Lol
well true, but thats not human nature
Wouldve been wasted either way. The world would likely be in a worst state if that the case. Pampering people makes them weak and dependant, brutal environments makes people strong and reasourceful.
Unfortunately, that's not the world we live in... Every one thinks of Hitler when you think about evil but Joseph Stalin was even worse and had more power. God only knows what the world would be like had Russia or Germany created the Atomic bomb first

I am 42y/o, a nurse and a history fanatic. This is by far the best story on Cold War. Thank u very much.
Absolutely... History 70 years ago still has influenced in today's politics.
Fair play for getting such a detailed account of such a huge part of history in an hour and a half! Great documentary
what a beautiful documentary!! IN the last three minutes, those images with the music really touch my soul!! THANK YOU FOR THIS!
No you're not
Bravo this is easily one of the best documentaries I’ve watched in a very long time. Well done.
This is the best channel on youtube.
All we need now is an American Civil War documentary and it would be nearly complete.
This shows why UA-cam is amazing

The best documentary on not just the Cold War, but most of the 20th century history. Brilliant.
I've never watched a long documentary but kept me awake the entire time.
This is by far the best Cold War documentary I’ve ever watched anywhere 👏
Beautifully explained !
You just got yourself a new subscriber ✌️
Very well done; nearly brought a tear to my eye once the epilogue came.
The single most thorough and well-produced account of the Cold War.
A non biased documentary away from state media properganda. Excellent content 👌
Right! Spot on, and spoke nothing but accurate facts, and never compared the East, to the west or the north in his own opinion
The videos on this channel are superb. Magnificent job
I'm from Brazil, this documentary is excellent, because it says things that some don't tell
I've learnt more from this channel, than all of school.
But you have to agree, it has no references, so it's merely an overview.
Sadly, schools only provide a distraction, beyond language & mathematics, their only usefulness, is socialising with other kids of a similar age & interest's. Real life skills learning, doesn't start until we leave school.
Watch 'the fog of war' film for even more context
He doesn't understand capitalism or communism, lesso so that either can be "at war"with the other.
You learned nothing. Just the phrase "the soviet union would fare better" is laughable. They skipped over a couple million deaths from collectivism.
That’s how bad American education is
Published on April 1st, but this material is no joke. The title does not deceive.
Well done on sticking as best you could to facts and staying away from editorializing. Not perfect, but probably the most “journalistic” effort I’ve seen in 10+ years. I appreciate not being propagandized for over an hour on real history in the last 100 years. Thank you 🙏👌🤘🙌🏻
Well said
Reid, since you apparently have the expertise to qualify this documentary as "not perfect" - as in compared to your perfect expertise, right?

Excellent documentary. Events of a very complex period of time explained very easily. Great narrating
That Russian commander in the sub during the Cuban missile crisis that incident should be made into a movie that would be absolutely fantastic can you imagine the commander refusing the order to launch the missiles what the atmosphere was like in that sub the yelling and screaming..Someone should make this into a movie.

Hello, fellow 70's 👶 🍼 👋
Very glad you included Romania. A lesson many should learn.
Watch the speech, you can see the exact moment he realises his entire country has turned against him. i anticipate governments of today who have become tyrannical in similar situations. People don't just lie down when they are suffering.
