One of the most beautiful bikes ever made. I had a blue 1977 BMW R100RS some years ago, and I just loved that bike. Today I ride a BMW R1100RS. Also a fantastic bike.
My first BMW was a Blue R80/7 to which I fitted the R100RS fairing kit: new head light bracketing ,wiring harness, handlebars, stiffer fork springs etc!... The 800cc was a lovely smooth running bike. I later sold it for the one featured...
I owned an identical year model and colour 1981 to 1983. I miss it. Then bought an RT for touring. I don't remember the pannier frames being black though. Very nice looking bike. Haven't seen a gold RS on the road for many years. When I started touring on it, found the 300km (180mile) tank range an problem when riding on weekends through small towns whose gas stations were closed from 12 noon Sat til Monday morning. Even the RT had a similar tank range. I bought the RS from a chap who flew to Germany and took delivery from the factory. Toured Europe then had it shipped home.
I remember those self retracting side stands on that model, learned very quickly to make sure my left ankle was well away from the stand when moved the bike upright as the stand flicked back. Learned the hard way! I do like the concept though and missed this feature on my next bike, a 1981 R100RT.
That's my Goldie at 2:15. She's been to Michigan to San Diego twice, and all over the midwest, Airhead Rallys. Best bike ever. Sold her to Chris B. in Pittsburg. PA
My '77 is the typical blue, but I've seen the gold ones in person at BMW rallies, and at first they look weird, but that color grew on me fast, they're stunning. Few finer streetbikes, now vintage, then an RS, you can ride one every day and always love it.
I owned the same bike in78/9. I cant remember when BMW changed the air filter box... the original looked part of the engine.. not the cheap looking plastic box they started using on later models. If there is one Bike I regret selling it would be the R100RS..Its build quality, reliability were second to none. In its time a very advanced touring bike, and still good even now..over forty years later...
Grilfirend + 2 Krausers fully loaded + big bag on reservoir: 6 to 8 hrs quasi non stop included hours at 160 km/h on highways. No problem with the 100 RS

The RT scored the new air intakes in 79 or 80 but most of the range saw them on the 1981 models from 9/80.

I remember that recall in about 1983 or 1984. Had mine replaced as well on an RT.
