Love how Troy doesn’t even use a saturated sound. He’s like “nah, I’m going clean for extra challenge.”
This is a myth. Clean tone can "hide" just as many mistakes as dirty tone. You just don't have to worry about the unplayed strings as much, or at all, with clean tone. So noise and muting are just not as important. And mistakes that don't involve a direct loud pick hit are much softer on a clean tone. This includes things like touching the wrong string, lifting off the string but accidentally plucking it with the fretting finger, etc. These things can be almost impossible to hear on clean tone but really loud and distracting on gain. Finally, pick attack can be really scratchy and ugly on a high gain tone if you don't have it oriented exactly right and hit it the same way every time. In short, if you want to be clean on high gain and clean tone, you really need to do both.

No, that's silly. I chose clean tone because I thought it sounded cool. That's what you should always do, i.e. choose what you like for your musical goals. I'm simply addressing the misperception that clean is the "hard" one and gain is the "easy" one. We hear this all the time and it is not true. Clean makes dynamics hard - even a small variation in your pick attack will make certain notes way too loud, or way too soft / gone. It will also reveal poorly set up guitars with action that is way too low or string gauges that are too light, where every note sounds like you're snapping it super hard. By contrast, gain makes noise and tone hard, as I've already explained. If you want to play both tones, you need both sets of skills.
@@troygrady Doing techniques such as tapping and legato or slide with clean tone requires better and more consistent and accurate technique to sound ‘good’ which makes them harder to master because the note has minimal help to bloom from the drive. You have to mute strings on clean and drive, makes no difference. I practice primarily with clean tone for this very reason. I know enough of my students at first hide behind their effects and their technique suffers because of it. When talking specifically about picking I totally agree with you about the ‘myth’ but it’s not a blanket truth for me in my experience.

Thank you! There really aren't different packages, per se. You can make a free account and browse the site and use the forum, or you can have a subscription with access to everything, including Technique Critique. Yes, you can buy individual items as downloads, and that may be where the confusion comes from because there are lots of those. But that's going down a road that might be overdoing it. In our main instructional stuff, we sort of assume that you'll be able to use the other lessons and interviews as a resource for finding songs and licks to play and practice. It's not 100% required but it makes more work for you to go out and find replacement material on your own.

I used to play all the time. now I'm almost 40 and have not played much in 10 years. When I do pick it up I get frustrated and stop.
How can I get past this. Or is that how everyone quits playing guitar? Still love your videos Troy.. Your the man.

@@Norseman2 A band is a good idea, I joined one at age 47, and now am 51, and play more guitar than I ever have!! The challenge and grit that comes with age helps sooo much in achieving new heights on the guitar.
Why do you get frustrated? Is it because you can't play like a virtuoso? I don't know, man. Try playing songs that you enjoy, simple things, simple riffs, simple melodies. You haven't practiced for 10 years so of course you won't be able to play complex stuff. Try playing a little bit everyday, if you do that you will get better and that may help you feel like you are progressing and you won't feel frustrated anymore. I guess you need to rediscover the joy of making music again. Playing music is fun, you don't need to be able to play like Steve Vai or Troy to have fun playing the guitar. You can have fun just by playing the pentatonic scale and coming up with simple melodies, you can have fun just by playing chords. Man, I get a kick just by playing two chords, trying to play them all over the freatboard in different positions, different shapes, different voicings and stuff.
My cousing quit playing the guitar. He did think it was easy to play and get good at it, but it takes practice, it takes effort, it takes time. I guess that not everyone has that passion to keep on trying, to persist when they start to struggle with the instrument or with the lack of technique to play what they want. Some people are just not willing to put the time and energy to learn something. If it's too hard they just quit.
But now we have people like Troy helping us. Troy has made so much easier to learn the proper techniques with his video lessons. Troy can't play the guitar for us, man. We are the ones who need to sit our asses down and practice, practice and practice. He is sharing the core concepts for free, he's making the secret know! Now it's up to us to practice them.
@@CalebePriester Your right and I really appriciate the comment. I used to play slayer pantera and megadeth trivium type stuff and I my music taste has changed alot. I dont have the pick speed anymore to play that and to be honest I dont know if I even want to. Also a big thing I smoked weed when I was a teen learning guitar and it took the bordem out of practicing. So I have to like you said rediscover the fun. Thanks for the positivity man.

Hey Troy sorry that I’m asking about a thing that not related to the video, but did you stopped with the cracking the code series? because people like Jason Richardson or Rusty Cooley (even that you invited him in the past) need more in-depth observations on their techniques, because their speed looks unreal, I listened to a lot of Polyphia songs lately, and there was one song “Aviator” with Jason Richardson and when Jason played his solo I really didn’t understand what I’m hearing, it was so fast that I laughed so at that point I highly recommend you to listen to the song and if you will invite him for better observations it will be amazing.

On a good day yes :) Actually it's funny that sometimes bends/vibratos are the hardest things to record properly. The "fast stuff" is mostly muscle memory.

Troy, why don't you talk more about the fret hand?
I think he does in his website. I was watching some older videos of the channel and in some of them he talks about what fingers he uses to play certain licks. I have seen him using some weird combinations. Troy is very good.
Articulate your actual fretting hand issue and he will surely address it. I think the reason he doesn't talk much about the fretting hand is because most people don't have an issue with it. You can strengthen it with legato drills.

Troy, does a debit card work to pay for a membership? I don't have a credit card nor a paypal account and my family doesn't have a credit card either. I want to become a member so badly, man. I want to crack the code!
In the US, a debit card is the same as a credit card. You can use it in any store or payment machine. In fact many debit cards actually have a credit card company logo on them. So I assume our web site would be the same way. I haven't heard from anyone that a debit card doesn't work. If you try it and run into a problem, just let us know in support and we'll look at it.
If using your debit card directly doesn't work, you can link your debit card to a PayPal account and then pay through PayPal.

Troy - you need to get Stephen Taranto on cracking the code. I have seen a lot of players with great technique but Stephen does things that should not be done on guitar.
I have problems when i playng powerchord whitout palmuting but when i want to do palm mute in a gallop riff is very hard to play, someone can help me?
