Crystal Park 2020, Rockhounding Montana and Hitting a HUGE Smokey Vug!

  • A rockhounding adventure that scratched one item off of the bucket list. We travel to Crystal Park Montana and dig for Smokey, Amethyst, and sceptered Quartz crystals that were formed in the Pioneer Batholith. We met up and dug for three straight days on July 29th, 30th, and 31st of 2020 with Aidan’s friend Eric. If a person wants to dig for quality quartz crystals, I highly recommend this area.
If any viewers are interested in purchasing mineral specimens, contact eric8he on his Instagram or Facebook page South Fork Minerals.

Going this saturday, about 4 hours from where we live and I'm so excited. My 6 year old son collects any nice rocks he finds or gems we buy for him so we're going for him. I went when I was 12 for a school trip and it's such a beautiful place to visit, watching your video has me even more excited to go back.

Should have seen the size of the crystals they were pulling out of crystal park back in the 70s. Lived next door to an avid rock hound named Mr. Magnuson in Dillon , he would often give specimens to sisters and I , favorite was a fully terminated smoky quartz about 9" . Mr. M had petrified logs , big picture rock slabs , quartz clusters that took two or men to move.

Before they built Price Creek in the mid-90's, you were allowed to set up camp just about anywhere at that place (for free). A few shady characters, for sure, but they were always happy to show you what they found and provide advice on where and how to dig. The site hosts from the Butte mineral/gem club would stay up there for a month at a time. I remember a couple of those guys had a hole close to 10 ft. deep straight down at the top (they had a ladder to get in and out). They were using sledges and pry bars to get through the granite. They came out with two crystals attached to a piece of granite. The largest one was easily 12-16" long and at least 6" in diameter. By far, the biggest stuff I've ever seen come out of there. Sorry to ramble on, but a lot of good memories from digging at Crystal Park with my kids back in the day. It's good to see others doing the same.

Price Creek Campground, USFS. This is the closest camp ground to the dig area. I don't remember if it was pet friendly or not. We got there on a Tuesday evening and about half the camp ground had vacant space available. Then on that Friday, the camp ground was fully occupied. We packed up and left Saturday morning. So definitely mid week is the way to go.

@@kodyryan5694 Hey friend i kniw this is late but hopefully it will be of some use to you. That blue pick shown in the first hole i believe is an Estwing PaleoPick. They're awesome, about 60 bucks but well, well worth it. Shorter than a traditional pick, closer to a mattock maybe? Probably around 2 feet or so. Has the traditional pick end but the other side is this nicely designed kind of a rounded, shorter and narrowed version of the traditional picks broad blade. And a super durable ergonomic style foam grip running most of the length of the shaft. It was awesome to me, ESPECIALLY on long and out of the way hikes to dig, because you have your rock pick but also can very easily use the broad end to move soil like a small shovel for the most part. If its an already established dig you're money for sure. Do you save on weight and items to hike in and out. Sorry for the novel just trying to give you the best rundown I can. They're genuinely a great tool. And im also in no way affiliated with the most excellent folks that have this channel or Estwing, just a rockhound . Good luck, happy hunting, be safe !
