  • This topic is really complex, and features so SO many nuances I couldn't fit into this video. So many factors influence how our brains deal with cognitive dissonance, but I wanted to keep this video simple in form. Let me know about your experiences with cognitive dissonance, if you've been able to recognize it in yourself and how you feel about it.

      I had my doubts about this video but I was pleasantly surprised. Good work :)
      Also an an aside, I guess this is one of the reasons why I don't understand when there are a group of people who lean certain ways politically are upset by people in the media who wish to remain apolitical (publically, at least).

    I've had this internal conflict about JKRowling and Harry Potter. I grew up in sync with the books publishing, so.. very near and dear to my heart. On the other hand I don't particularly like the way JKR is handling society's modern issues, especially internet related. I think she's jumping on bandwagons before she really knows what she's talking about. She is extremely influential, so to me this is irresponsible. Not a Logan Paul degree of irresponsible, but you know.. At the end I distanced the author from the product in my mind and I'm currently at peace. That's an option, too!

      Milo O'Rourke She's become an SJW and attacked Felix without reason. She's an old lady still trying to stay relevant, and doesn't even know he own books.
      She stated that "nowhere in her books does it say Hermione couldnt be black"...except it literally describes her as light skinned.

      Radoslava Vasileva Unfortunately my brain linked HP and Rowling and have since had a “falling out” with the mythology bc of my own frustrations w its author. Furthermore, the Fantastic Beasts film was very disappointing (I seem to be alone in this opinion) and has further alienated me from HP which is quite upsetting 😓 Glad you could separate and wish I could too 💔

    Cognitive dissonance was one of the main things I took away from my Psychology class, and I find myself using it to understand different situations. I'm so glad you made a video about it!

  • @savvireads

    This video is great :) I learned about cognitive dissonance in a short psych class once and I found it so fascinating, too.
    In the book community there are always conversations about problematic things in books (in varying degrees!). The general consensus seems to be: read whatever you like, acknowledge the problematic aspects and reflect on those. You can still like problematic stuff; just be aware of WHY it's problematic. For example: I love Twilight for nostalgic reasons. Twilight is problematic af. I know that. These things can exist at the same time.
    Maybe the conflict here isn't big enough for a true 'choose left or right' kind of cognitive dissonance situation though.
    (I've just woken up and I'm not sure if I explained this well but yeah. Also this is about books and not people, that's usually a bit different. Lots of book people don't support problematic authors who are openly sexist of whatever.)

    I've thought about cognitive dissonance a lot, especially with your Harry Potter example, but with me it's ol' Johnny Depp. Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland made me want to work in film, and Pirates of the Caribbean inspired a deep, life long obsession with everything related to pirates. These movies affected me when I was a young kid, so much so it's basically built into my personality at this point, so I was incredibly uncomfortable once the stories about his abuse came out. How do I go back and erase my love and appreciation for these movies, let alone a significant part of my childhood? I came to the conclusion that I can't. I still love these movies, and that will never change, but going forward I can actively not support Depp and the work that he does. I can't help what I like and have liked, but I can change who and what I support monetarily, and sometimes that's the most important thing these days. And I definitely got rid of that Jack Sparrow cutout that was in my room for 10 years. Bye, bitch.

      There is more about film than Johnny Depp. He does not create the content. He is solely one actor in a whole group of hard working individuals. The rest of the credits at the end of a film...those are the people and process to look for inspiration. The film industry is more than one random person.

    • @bananaborz1

    • @skittykay
      @skittykay 6 років тому

      well times 3 but the thing is Depp is one of if not the highest paid name in those credits ... and he's paid so highly because producers rely on his name and brand as an actor to make a lot of money. Most of those other names, everyday working people in pre and post production, they've already been paid and it doesn't matter as much to them how the movie does once it's been released. However the financial success of a movie DEFINITELY matters to Depp and Hollywood producers because it's a gauge on how many people Depp can attract to the theatre as a huge star. If I go to a movie with Depp in it, with my money, I'm proving to those directors and casters that Depp is still a viable lead to bank their movie's success on.

    This was really educational, and you explain so well; thank you ! You were probably thinking about Logan Paul, but I have to say my brain directly went to the Melanie Martinez dilemma which has really impacted me recently. The part about trying to find evidence on the side that satisfies us the most especially made me open my eyes, and I hope it will help other people as well. Media really influences all of us and no matter the issue, we should all try to open our mind a little to both sides.

    • @Rainiepie
      @Rainiepie 6 років тому +3

      Me too. During christmas, my dad said that as a society we should just enjoy the creations of horrible people without financially rewarding them for it. That's when Melanie Martinez came up. Both my sister and I have liked her music. Me especially, I'm not a music person but from the very first song, I connected. It was really hard, but the wording of her response made me think that the rape happened, but Melanie doesn't see it that way. At first I jsut kept skipping the songs because I felt so sad and guilty but eventually I deleted them. I don't know if I'd be able to listen to them again in the future, I wouldn't buy again but what I already have... I don't know. My sister is still supporting and saying that Timothy was lying for attention. Christmas drama.

    • @BAKAROID
      @BAKAROID 6 років тому +5

      Yeah, I morally just can't listen to her songs anymore either. I'm not much of a groupie but MM is the only celebrity I really supported and followed, and this just destroyed me. I don't want to stan any side, but I think the way she reacted to the situation was pretty immature, and that just makes it hard for me to believe her. (And I'm really mad because I feel like I can't wear the 100$ jacket I bought from her either--) I hope whichever happen, we (and the rest of the community) will manage to move on.

    The breakdown of this theory was extremely helpful. I like how you incorporated celebrities and their mistakes they make. They are always being watched and one bad move or one slip up, turns many people away from them. You can either choose to still support them and get over whatever they did that you don't agree with, or you choose to abandon them because you don't believe in whatever they did.

    cognitive dissonance is a really important and interesting concept to me too! i consciously get extremely uncomfortable, i think more than your average person, when my ideals aren’t reflected in every action which causes me a lot of stress. i think this is related to another concept that stuck with me... self realization or the convergence of who you are and who you want to be. once you reach that state i think that this conflict of cognitive dissonance is minimized. great video, ang!!!

    We spoke about this in a fandom class I was in last quarter in school! I really loved this video and you always do such a wonderful job of explaining things!

  • @afirewasinmyhead
    @afirewasinmyhead 6 років тому +7

    Cognitive dissonance as a concept was a huge takeaway from my social studies classes, too. Learning about it helped me to notice when it's happening to me, which usually feels like panic mixed with this doomed feeling because I *know* what's important to me and what the best choice would be for myself/my values/my morals. I think it takes a good amount of self-reflection to get to that point, to really know where you stand on certain issues and why, and to make the tough decisions instead of just doing whatever most quickly alleviates the discomfort of cognitive dissonance.
    It can be scary to face the thought that you need to change your behaviour because (I mean, at least for me) it feels like you're admitting that your past self was Wrong or Bad. But your past self wasn't wrong or bad! They just didn't know better. And once you know better, you can do better. I think we all need to remind ourselves that making mistakes is okay and change is normal. When cognitive dissonance happens, it's not an alarm bell telling you that you messed up, it's a chance to learn about yourself and to make better/kinder choices.
    Loved this video, ALB. :)

    I'm a psych major and this is all stuff I've always learned about, but sometimes I find it hard to apply it to current events (even if I understand how it applies to everyday life). This is a great video that breaks things down in an understandable way and connects it to what's going on in our society right now. For me especially, the Harry Potter example hits close to home. I love Harry Potter and I know people associate me with Harry Potter the same way you know people associate you with Lord of the Rings. The more I learn about JKR, the less and less I like her (especially with the most recent incident). Sometimes it makes it difficult to enjoy Harry Potter in the same way that I used to. Loved hearing these concepts connecting with something in my personal life.

      JK made comments on casting johnny depp in fantastic beasts abt how they (she and WB) decided not to recast his character bc they know johnny and find him to be a good person and that accusations against him (abuse both physical and mental against his ex wife) arent a basis for them to recast him. The wording was uh very condescending and the whole thing doesnt sit well with a lot of ppl. Especially that the main character of HP is an abuse victim. So ppl think it's shitty of her to write a series with main character being abused and then talk abt how great of a person depp is.

    Cognitive dissonance is a huge topic in understanding Carnism (the invisible belief system that conditions people to eat certain animals). I really recommend videos and the book "Why we love dogs, eat pigs and wear cows" by Melanie Joy to learn more about this. There's also tons of articles and videos on cognitive dissonance in regards to eating animal products that can be insightful. For me personally the biggest cognitive dissonance in my life was eating animals and their secretions (milk, eggs) while I claimed to love them. I believe it is the most widespread case of cognitive dissonance there is. Anyhow, good video!

    Im the type of person who if i like a book, film, music etc i never really get into the creator unless i really really want to. I still respect the artist or writer completely, ive just never had a super "fan girl" mindset towards them there are some exceptions but at the end of the day i could forget about them for a month and go back and Remember "oh i like that". i think today its harder not to feel a personal connection with creators since social media is so much more prevalent in our lifes and they constantly show themselves to us in different ways which can conflict how we feel about them and others. I think this video was very well put Alb, yet people will still argue for a recent case *cough cough* because they are young and have grown up with social media in particular being a main part of there lifes.

    As I get older (I'm in my later 20s) I've learned to pick my battles. With the whole cognitive dissonance, facing extremes can lead to us shutting out a lot of people and ultimately shutting our minds off and losing our ability to be more tolerant. I do believe there is a line (ie. celebrities who have sexually harassed or assaulted someone), but we can still like ASPECTS of people, such as their artwork, without liking them or their flaws or w/e made them problematic. I've had a friend question me because I like H.P Lovecraftian lore. And why? Because H.P Lovecraft was racist. To me, it wasn't even worth debating. How can one take my love for his lore and come to the conclusion that I support a racist cause?? H.P Lovecraft died in 1937! In her head, she'd made her mind up, but this friend also has the tendency to assume that if anyone or anything is even remotely problematic then you shouldn't have ANYTHING to do with it. At all. But to me, that's unrealistic. There is no person on this planet who has lived a life without faults and doesn't have a single problematic opinion.

    Nice video. I especially appreciated the tone. So many things that cover this topic tend to have a pointing finger kind of feel to them.

    This was a really good breakdown about a topic I never knew had a name... I’m still learning a lot ^^;
    Immediately what came to my head is that once a month among this group I’m in online I like to list a bunch of Punk Bands that have either done problematic things or are just shady. Mostly as a warning to people looking to get into Punk more then anything.
    However since I myself am not deep into Punk (by that I mean I’m still pretty green in the community) I end up finding out awful things about bands that end up being a big deal. At the end of the day I mostly share that list out of wanting to warn newbies like myself, but also I end up just letting everyone know that these bands, or members of it, have done or believe something questionable or straight up awful.
    After asking that I be sure to say there’s nothing inherently wrong with enjoying some of their content just as long as you know what they’ve done and know not to defend them hen if someone doesn’t like them for those reasons... or To avoid entirely because what they did was that bad, either or lol

    This reminded me of learning about the Yulan Dog Festival (where people eat dogs) and how all the people that were outraged by it ate chickens, cows, and/or pigs for dinner. Cognitive dissonance was the explanation given for their behavior.

    (this comment is a rambley mess but important) The biggest thing about combating this is weighing your options. You of course want to recognize that if something you like is associated with, or involves something problematic, to RECOGNIZE that this thing is problematic. From there its up to you to choose if you want to continue liking it or not based on the severity. Because you can still like something while being conscious of it being problematic contrary to popular belief, you dont have to like everything about your favorite media. However if that is the whole of the content and not just part of it, or something much more severe, there may be some things to reconsider. And with these things you have to consider who you want to support and where your putting your money. Its essentially up to your own judgement, but dont delude yourself into thinking something is okay when its not. And as for other people you see liking problematic content, 1) do they recognize that it is problematic, 2) do they support this media, 3) how bad is this thing. With all of those factors considered use your own judgement to decide if youre comfortable interacting with them, if not, stay away. If you want to let them know its problematic, dont attack, educate,. And if they dont listen? They wont learn, no matter how much you say to them. If they are choosing to block the information you will NOT get through to them, so its best to leave them alone. Some people have to figure it out on their own by realizing overtime that this isnt a good option. Attacking these kinds of people is the wrong answer as well because they wont learn like that and often will become more set in their opinions. People doing these bad things is a whole different story and that isnt what this is about, but treat it with these same things in mind, involving whatever is needed per the situation (as in if somebody has committed some kind of crime against somebody).

    This video was a bit of branching out into a kind of video you don't really do (at least, I think it's a bit different given the subject compared to your other informative videos), but it worked really well and I think you did a great job explaining it!

    Thanks for sharing! Like others have stated, I really liked the easy-to-understand explanation and overview of a very complex topic. We touched on this concept in one of my sociology classes in college ("social interaction"), and it's really fascinating how our brains try to find shortcuts and other ways to make sense of the world around us.
    In my case, I find lots of conflict with separating a creator and their work. As someone else in the comments mentioned, I personally feel like you can't really separate the two as the creator is benefitting in some way from their work in the media space. I find myself doing an evaluation: the creator's past actions, current actions, etc. allow me to come to a conclusion on whether I stop supporting their work or continue to support them despite their current "wrongdoings."
    For example, I used to really like Lena Dunham despite a lot of criticism against her (especially since said criticism was coming from groups whose beliefs and values didn't align with mine). However, as time as elapsed, I find more of her actions and beliefs problematic and not in line with mine. Therefore, despite liking her show "Girls," I find myself distancing myself from her current work and probably her future stuff, too.
    That being said, I still think it's possible to be critical of media you love, and hardly anything (IF anything at all) is an absolute. :)

    Very great rundown of the concept. I've seen so many fall into this trap. While I can see it in others, it can be quite hard to see in myself. Probably because my own brain doesn't want to see me that way.
