A few things- during normal rule of law- make sure you are not a 'willing participant ' (legal requirement in Minnesota, FYI), don't ever 'shoot to kill', but rather, shoot to stop the threat, warning shots can be a felony in many states (know your laws), be the first to call the police and include 'my life was in danger', he gave me no other choice', and finally, if the situation allows for verbal interaction, always command loudly, aggressively and with purpose. I was taught to yell, ' STOP PUH-LEEZE'. What your actually saying is stop, please. The bad guy just might think you're yelling, stop, police (depending on how you've practiced the annunciation). This may deescalate into surrender (which is always preferable). Also, you're NOT required to give first aid. It's better to ask for an ambulance. And finally (again)- SHUT THE HELL UP. don't answer any questions when the cops come. Your only statement should be what you reported on the 911 call. Ask for an attorney. The cops aren't your friends.

      Your information is SPOT ON!!!!!
Even in the BEST of times, ANY conversation you have with any member of law enforcement MUST be guarded and as BRIEF as possible!
Even at an ordinary traffic stop, if the officer asks if he/she can look in your car, DO NOT LET THEM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! You ALWAYS tell the officer this: "I do not consent to searches."

SHTF I'm am NOT bound by any idiotic rules of engagement. I'm to advanced in age to get into fist fights, so if it comes to that it's turning into a gun fight. I think you have forgotten what stupid ROEs cost us in casualties.

Gentlemen that's a great point. When we did training scenarios, the scenario was a police officer is in the room getting beat up by a bad guy. An older police officer would run in and the first thing he would do with his weapon drawn is just start shooting the bad guy. The older police officer knew enough and had seen enough to know that the time for talking had ended and it was just time for action.

WickedSensation if we are only talking about WROL, then I agree, there'd be no such thing as fist fights. ROE will be determined on a case by case basis, by me.

I'm with you there, to a certain degree...
I can't agree with physical contact, once you've shown them your weapon. I'm not gonna stand there, with a gun in hand, and start shoving someone. If I can shove them back, they got too close in the first place. Sure, first stand and show, then warn, then brandish, and next step is shoot to kill. There is no "risk your weapon in a physical shoving contest" in there for me.

You probably just saved someone's life in the future. I often see 'hot heads' out there during this time of peace. Recommend staying away from anyone who lacks control over their emotions. They are 'loose canons', and when under the extreme stress of WROL, I fear they may be very dangerous to all.

A good resource to check with for the use of force continuum is your local law enforcement training academy. Many of these academy's (increasingly in today's societal unrest) will allow you as a civilian to go though an abbreviated version of the actual course police officers take, and then give you real life scenarios to play out with trained aggressors.

Thanks SP1, I'd never heard of those steps. I own no weapon (I live in Santa Monica, CA and I believe it's very difficult to be approved for a weapon here but I could be wrong). I appreciate the steps as I didn't even know about soft body parts versus collar bone versus eyes, etc. I believe most people pray they never have to apply this knowledge, but it's good to know, just in case. Thank you.

  • @chubbyzombie666

I was also part of the tip of the spear in 03. USMC. We stayed within a mile of the grunts and one thing I learned was after a few months, the locals got immune to us pointing weapons at them. So one of the fellow farm boys grabbed a pick handle, slung it over his shoulder and started walking towards them. The locals were pretty sure we would not shoot them for harassing us. But had no doubt would beat the hell out of them with a stick. They started to run and scream. So if you find afterwhile that your firearm isn't doing the trick, shoulder the weapon and grab something such as a bat or a large pic handle.

  • @bruceforster3709
    @bruceforster3709 8 років тому

This is avery difficult subject for me, sir.
I have been in two situations where I have had to draw my firearm; once as a security guard, and the second time when a person I wanted nothing to do with attempted to open my car door to continue a confrontation I was attempting to get away from. THIS IS WHY I ALWAYS KEEP MY DOORS LOCKED! When this person attempted to open my car door to get to me, I simply raised my gun where he could see it. He stopped immediately and walked away.
In a former church my wife and I attended, the Head Elder, who has had NO firearms training carries a concealed gun into the Church on a regular basis. When the Pastor confronted him about this, the Elder responded with these EXACT words: "If someone causes trouble, I want to be able to take them out." This man is the LAST person who should be armed, IMHO! The potential lawsuit facing this church is off the charts! It is one of the reasons my wife and I LEFT that Church! In this Elder's mind, his gun is his FIRST go to, rather than his LAST. In my opinion, that man is EXTREMELY dangerous, and someone to be avoided at all costs!

This is excellent advice that doesn't get touched on enough in the prepper community. An excellent court case to look at for Use of Force is Graham vs Connor. I just feel bad for people who live in really liberal states who self-defense laws protect the criminal more than the good guy. :)

Hard topic this one is...This is my area of expertise. Shoot --No shoot scenarios. I've taught this many times to classes. To be honest.. Sometimes the ROE go right out the window. There is not always a 100% correct way to do this. I have to side with some of the commentary here. In a WROL situation, everyone is going to be in a hyper sensitive state of being. Whereas acting to quickly could end your life, and acting not quick enough will surely do the same. I think in a WROL, avoidance will be our best bet. And if avoidance is not possible at some point, I have to lean toward acting first, whereas sooner may be better than later.

Sonny Puzikas has a great interview about the philosophy behind this - Gospel of Violence. You have to have a range of options. Things like cameras, visibility, and noise are definitely a great start and prevent a lot of violence before it even starts. 100% agree. We had a really agressive guy come to our front door about a week ago. He looked at our camera after some aggression on our door and just *froze* ... turned around and took off FAST. Haven't seen him since. I know this is just the beginning though. Much worse is coming.

+37South No, not a forum. People start groups for a monthly fee, the ones I have been in don't pass fees onto anyone that joins the group. The admin usually sets up actual meetings. Some groups do classes...I used to do some classes myself. You can Google it and go to the site to find out more, it doesn't cost anything to check it out. And you don't have to sign in to search for groups.

  • @TheSurvivalBookshelf

Tough subject. Most average people aren't trained nor have they been in a physical fight which is something to consider in an escalation of force. They don't want the perp to get to close to them, close enough to strike because maybe the situation warrants that (big guy vs little guy) and the weapon out is all there is between the two. Certainly something to ponder what would you do in given situations. Also how many people are out there? 50? How many bullets you got?

Anyone thought about a potato gun for area denial during a riot? You can make canister projectiles from old calking tubes that split open once fired spreading what ever is inside them like caltrops or other things people would not want to mess with. Rubber bands or duck tape on once end to hold together a split tube and as it leaves the barrel it will catch air and open up sending what ever is inside over a large area.

Authoritatively but not to close the distance like a sociopath or someone deceiving them would. More like a dog would, "this is my spot, my spot, my spot, my spot, GO, GO, GO, GO, MY SPOT." So their simple pea-sized brains when fight or flight kicks in (and the blood has left) can digest the information and make the right choice. Which is get the hell out. If they choose to stay, then you know they've made their choice, if that makes sense. Or they're confused, which means you need to get back and re-assess.

madjack821 It's a whole other scenario that's in the line of "what to do if they're reaching for something, turned around, hands in pockets, hands near pockets, can't see hands, near a car, running for a car..." This hypothetical stuff can go on all day so that's why we talk about one scenario at a time.

I'd only bother with muscle strikes if I knew I had multiple people to help back me up. Otherwise it would be straight to the ribs, knees, collar bones and head if I was using a baton. As far as firearms go, only draw if you are willing to shoot. This doesn't mean you HAVE to shoot, but that it has gotten to the point that if a gun pointed in their face doesn't stop them, then nothing else (other that the following slugs of lead) will.

And if avoidance is not possible at some point, I have to lean toward acting first, whereas sooner may be better than later.
