I should have said the steel he used for the sleeve was harder than mild steel, so the sleeve should last forever

Mike, great info (yet again). I've always been cautious of heading down to my local machine shop and asking for custom work - I'm sure they can spot a mark like me a mile away.
In general, how much should we budget for this kind of thing?

It's not easy to answer as JP runs a tab with me, but I would hazard a guess at $20/30

Being in Canada, parts shipping is expensive, so getting things repaired locally is sometimes the cheapest and fastest option!

If in doubt take it out. As the actress said to the bishop. 😂

Well, like always, you are a blessing. I have a very late 90s 110 300tdi with a super clunky salisbury and I v had mixed thoughts about rebuilding it or just buy a discovery 1 full diff, am gonna have to dare it because I want to keep my defender (companion 😊) as stock as I possibly can.

This one is a right old pain in the arse! Clunky, but checks out - put new shims in the spider gears, and the new ones seem to be out of spec as they block the diff completely!
The backlash is just on the extremity of the specs 6-11 thou - this one is 13
I think I will take a shim out of one side and stick it in the other to see what happens
Problem working on these axles is the tools needed

@@BritannicaRestorations @BritannicaRestorations 🤣🤣old pain in the ****., am a heavy duty mechanical engineer (CAT) so I v got most of the tools, problem is I bought diff rebuild kits (non salisbury) for my other defender from britpart and they wore sooner than I expected so am not sure the other manufacturer to use.

Off topic, but do you ever find issues with a Defender on a 2 post lift? I am looking to buy one, but the internet seems to think 2 post is a bad idea?

As Abraham Lincoln said - Never believe what you read on the Internet!
      Mine works fine for Defenders
Slight issue with rear springs dislocating, but a big hammer sorts them out
