While the game can be enjoyed without watching the briefing and intro cutscene, they would really have given you a lot of context for the game's setting and characters. I've just finished watching this video, so I have no idea if you get to watch them eventually, but here's hoping. Great stuff so far.
Coming back to watch this after getting into your channel through the souls playthrough - you've quickly become one of my favorite UA-camrs and I somehow only just found out you did a playthrough of one of my all time favorite games lol.
It's sort of a shame that everyone misses the mission briefing stuff since it's hidden in the main menu. It was a super cool addition to the game I think, just a wacky amount of information tossed at you about what's going on right at the start. Background on the facility, what FOXHOUND is and their demands, genome soldiers, nanomachines, how Liquid Snake is Solid Snake's "twin"... a lot of stuff the game sort of assumes you know. Without it it's all pretty disorienting. And of course this was back when games expected people to read the manual. There's a lot of little mechanics in MGS that make it a lot smoother that the game literally never spells out. Reloading, choking out / throwing guards / snapping their necks, first-person mode, running while firing a rifle...
It's weird that it's been this long since I started watching your channel. I remember when you had just hit 1K subs, and now we're at 33K. Well, cheers to you Map!
I watched your ground zero’s review of the main mission all the way thru and thoroughly enjoyed it. So i wanted to watch the journey from the beginning… This should be entertaining.
The only problem with these reviews type people is they talk during cut scenes and always miss important information like using the key cards for level 1 doors, which lead to a lot of wasted time and extra deaths.
Oh this is gonna be good! I know this is an older video of yours but I thought I'd check it out after watching your Half-Life 2 playthrough that I really enjoyed. I will just say that I wish you had got to play the NTSC version of Metal Gear Solid as this PAL version is like watching the game in slow motion - Snake runs sooooo slowly in the PAL version lol.
Back to a classic! Next time you play this through, or do another Lets Play.. watch the Briefing section, and the intro cutscene before the title screen. So much exposition you went into this without! Some of it is just mentioned casually in the course of the game but without proper context doesn't make as much sense.
Ooh MGS, you really are spoiling me. But thank god you're not playing the gamecube Twin Snakes remake. (let's just say they watched The Matrix too much before remaking it). Not watched the video yet but I concur with oldsilenthill below, try out the VR missions to get used to the controls, one of the best tutorial systems there is.
I feel like I need to tackle the VR missions with how I’ve played so far as you’ll soon see 😂 Part 3 should have some VR training then. Did not even know there was a remake on GameCube so luckily I have chosen right!
@@Mapocolops My memories are a bit fuzzy but you do a series of quick tests then try them out together and feel really proud of yourself... but when finished you can set them to play themselves and you will see Snake do it all in a fifth of the time you took and realise that you can do it so much better. Once you see the moves in action they are pretty simple to copy. You might want to dedicate some time off screen after trying them out at first.
the cutscenes in the twin snakes thingy were directed by a guy called ryuhei kitamura, who also made the movie versus.... if you've seen that one, some of the choices start to make a little more sense 😂😂
Wow, I never heard that ending dialogue after beating Revolver Ocelot where he demeans your combat skills. I never beat him with only a slither of my health left, i ether died or defeated him with a lot of health left so everytime i fought him, he tells me that the boss was right about how good of a fighter Snake is. I never knew Ocelot tells you that snake is no match for Liquid if you beat him with just a little bit of health left lol. Thats interesting.
Jesus Christ... ill forgive the weird low resolution game capture just because its so rare to see a genuinely good "blind play" of MGS1. Well done sir.
You're right he usually says "my hand". The "aaaah" plays if you aren't playing well. There's several cutscenes that are different based on your performance. Though I gotta say that's such an arbitrary change and doesn't really have impact.
@@SovLestlandia Nope, that cutscene is slightly different depending on how long you take to beat him. The big difference is that he says "you're pretty good" rather than "you're not cut out for war" but he also yells "my hand!" rather than just screaming.
But how do we know that guard didn't turn up until later in the conversation with Donald and then so happen to hear them speaking? We can't exactly see what is going on outside that cell block.
Screaming at the screen for 10 minutes, "You have a lvl 1 keycard!!!" and also "You're not suppost to kill anyone!!!" Love to see the playthrough though. 😀
Watching this man struggle through PS1 games is always hilarious. He’s so clueless most of the time and instead of taking time to learn the mechanics he just jumps straight in and dies hahah. I beat this game when I was 12 and he makes me look like a Wunderkind hahah.
Yeah a lot of people jump in without the context of the manual and the briefings, forgetting that this is a PS1 game and this was back when external media was part of the whole package. If you ignore that it's pretty disorienting.

The only problem with these reviews type people is they talk during cut scenes and always miss important information like using the key cards for level 1 doors, which lead to a lot of wasted time and extra deaths.
50:36 dude i've never put it into words but that is way too god damn real i laughed too hard at that xD
Loved the first ep mate
You just gained a subscriber!
Looking foward to see the next games
Do you intend to play them all?
Cheers
Hey thank you! Yes I’m currently playing Portable Ops so I’ll be going through everything I can
2nd floor basement?
18:04 - not yet, he would do that 7 years later with MGS3: Snake Eater though
Oh this is gonna be good! I know this is an older video of yours but I thought I'd check it out after watching your Half-Life 2 playthrough that I really enjoyed. I will just say that I wish you had got to play the NTSC version of Metal Gear Solid as this PAL version is like watching the game in slow motion - Snake runs sooooo slowly in the PAL version lol.
Don't mind me. Just back for my 17th rewatch.
Only the 17th? Those are rookie numbers.
Damn, less of a beard. Looking good, Mapo! 😁
Another PS1 game you should play is SYPHON FILTER!
Definitely
Back to a classic! Next time you play this through, or do another Lets Play.. watch the Briefing section, and the intro cutscene before the title screen. So much exposition you went into this without! Some of it is just mentioned casually in the course of the game but without proper context doesn't make as much sense.
46:41 - Not yet.
It's not over yet.
16:41 so proud
1:00:07 All these decades later and I didn’t even know there was a room there!! 😮😅
I really hate that Twin Snakes remake. Its terrible and changes a lot of scenes that were awesome in the original game.
Hahaha yeah the question-based dialogue is quite typical of Japanese writing. It does sound funny when you're not used to it xD
That type of dialogue was I didnt notice when i first played. I only noticed how much he does it after years later watching others react to the game.
ayyyyyy. great channel, btw. loved your playthrough of Silent Hill 2!
LURCH thank you!!
Secret Floor! lol
Omg "crouch quickly" dhdhdh you made me laugh several times xD
Jesus Christ... ill forgive the weird low resolution game capture just because its so rare to see a genuinely good "blind play" of MGS1. Well done sir.
Did you played this game on epsxe or rpcs3 emulator?
Is it possible that I remembered Ocelot saying "what?! My hand!" Instead of "aaaaaah"
You're right he usually says "my hand". The "aaaah" plays if you aren't playing well. There's several cutscenes that are different based on your performance. Though I gotta say that's such an arbitrary change and doesn't really have impact.
You are probably remembering the Twin Snakes, which was a remake of metal gear solid 1. Did you ever own a gamecube by any chance?
Other games such as Tenchu and Resident Evil weren't as pretentious and dog shit as this one
@@colbyboucher6391 i learn ebtter that way, its easier for me to just jump into something and figure out first hand what I dont know than sitting back trying to learn a whole knew mechanic before getting a proper feel for it.
@@ChrisMaxCisneroswhy even type out a dumb sentence?
1:24 What do you mean by this? I've seen up till part 5 and it looks like you're missing info from the intro still. Is the intro in another series?
1:24 foxtrot or foxhound :D
hahahahaha omg...I thought it was something I said but no, I can't believe I wrote that :')
What's the best way to play this?
great!, you should try some VR missions from the main screen menu, so you can learn some good tactics to distract enemies and learn useful pro moves!
I’ll be sure to check them in the next episode I record! I think I’ll need it haha
Are you playing this on a pc?
Can somebody please tell me how I can play metal gear on the PlayStation 1 I’ve tried it before and it doesn’t seem to work on the newer televisions. I’m absolutely busting to play it aswel
You could try using an emulator
played on the ps5 with the master collection an they looked good to me or if you got it on ps1 already get a crt tv thats what they were meant to be played on
i love this game sm
Bros got the survival instincts of an acorn. Lmao.
so jealous of your yugioh intro
I cant believe you spent like 10 mins in the first floor lol
Because this game is dog shit compared to games like Tenchu and other classics during this time
Because this game is dog shit compared to games like Tenchu and other classics during this time
@@ChrisMaxCisneros looks like someone had a hard time playing mgs too. Tenchu is ok for its time. cotrols sucks ass. Average game.
@@ChrisMaxCisnerosbuddys dogshit at mgs
I've watched 7 mins so far and can say this is actually the most painful video i have seen as an axperienced mgs(1) player, it's almost cringey watching someone play this for the first time when you have this game saved to your own personal memory 😂
I love the video though, good genuine virgin footage i love it 😂 you'll learn to love the game i promise....replayability is unlimited!!!!!
Well! I think it is fun as hell! It's are exactly as my foughts are a bout a player in 2020 are playing this game. So some of his death makes me laugh so mutch
how did you never play this as a kid?
because people play different games growing up? there's so many just in my community that haven't played the MGS series.
@@Mapocolops no problem I totally forgive you and I am so happy that you found it. I loved playing this on my playstation as a kid, it was a great game.
34:54 🤣🙊
Snakeeeeee
58:02 lol
I got scammed into paying the new games yesterday reason I say scammed couldn’t updated controls camera graphics like idk , but point being I spent 27 hrs and I just found the elevator to go to B1 or B2 lol
Did you _actually_ spend 27 hours wandering around the first floor? Because _holy shit_
Also make sure you check out the Briefing stuff on the main menu because it give you a _lot_ of story context that's just missing otherwise.
Game doesn't need to be updated, really. It plays how it plays. If they remade it you'd probably just have less ways of dealing with things. It's effectively a "remake" / soft reboot of the original Metal Gear on the MSX, called Metal Gear Solid because there's polygons now.
@@colbyboucher6391 yes sir and thanks to this walkthrough I made it to the next phase , I appreciate this series thank you
