Fun Fact about the voice acting: According to David Hayter who voiced Snake, all the dialogue was recorded in an apartment in New York instead of an actual studio, likely due to a limited budget. This was fine because the fidelity of PS1 audio is not that high. However, when they made the MGS: Twin Snakes (a remake of MGS1 for the Gamecube) they had to re-record everything in a studio because if they had used the original audio and upscaled it, you would've been able to hear the traffic outside the apartment.
Funnily enough I noticed he sounded different in twin snakes and actually liked his voice more in the original but due to the traffic it makes sense why it was re-recorded haha
I've seen this meme multiple times in the past decade, but never any actual evidence. PS1's CD quality audio really isn't "low fidelity" by any metric. Also, TTS' new voice acting and especially localization suck arse.
Another fun fact in the same vein; When MGS was being developed, a vast majority of the voice talent used pseudonyms instead of their actual names. This was due to the fact that Konami chose to use established actors & actresses for the voice work. Many of whom were in the Screen Actors Guild, which at that time had no set of established rules regarding members voice acting for video games. Instead of running the risk of running afoul with the SAG, many chose to use fake names, such as James Flinders (Cam Clarke), Patric Laine (Patric Zimmerman) & Sean Baker (David Hayter)
I remember seeing some interview and they said that like every time a motorcycle passed by or a truck or something, they'd have to stop and wait for the noise to stop before they resumes their lines.
@@GugureSux the localization team and the voice acting director were the same for both games. Mei Ling's voice was changed due to a mistranslation of how she was meant to be portrayed in the original game. The direction of the game was different being led by the director of the Japanese action film Versus and was meant to celebrate the ludicrous nature of the story as opposed to making it this super serious action game made popular at the time all with Kojima watching excitedly.
Chaff grenades my man. Blocks cameras, stops Vulcan's tank detecting you, screws up the Ninja, Metal Gear Rex and so forth. They're your best friend in this game.
I remember playing this in 99’ and it broke my brain. I was instantly hooked, but when Psycho Mantis started reading my memory card, I was legitimately freaked out. It was a real “wow, so this is the future of tech” moments, haha. Great to see that game still has value for younger audiences today!
If you plugged your controller into the second player port he couldn't read your moves when trying to attack him. Hideo was on another level and still is.
i see youre all about crash bandicoot.. dont mind me for perving around your interests.. i can also see what other things youre perving around.. should have cleared your browser history.. this is me psycho mantis.. im all up in all of your most disgraceful moments.. im literally connected to the cia.. this isnt even a game.. we're just letting you know that were onto all of your perversions because thats necessary or whatever..
Boy what a different time it was. No twitch, no gigachad streamers. You went to the store in anticipation to buy the discs. It was you and the game. Companies invested fortunes in story telling and soundtracks. The graphical advance was hype with every game. Technological details like rumble motors blew our minds. And the Psycho Mantis controller swap has to be the most unique game mechanic ever invented to this day. MGS is one of my all time favourites and I think the success of this release founded what the whole franchise is today. ❤
I remember my aunt’s boyfriend had this game and even though he offered me turns to play I never actually took a turn, I just watched him over the course of like 3 or 4 nights play the game. TIL like 3am because he was a young g doctor and got off late. We were so caught up in the story it was like binge watching a great show. RIP Uncle Rodney
Totally. The psycho mantis fight and the com code on the back of that case brought the game right into the room with you. My buddy, who was never a gamer, would sut with me and watch me play. An all time classic game.
True. People today don’t realize there were NO games like this back then. It was like playing out an action movie and there really weren’t games made more adult themed like this back then on PS1. I will never forget playing the demo a month before release that ended with DARPA chief dying and I knew I had to have the game. It and snake eater are in my top games of all time.
the technological leap between games is still astounding to this day. I still consider MGS one of the most immersive and cinematic games ever. despite it being 20+ years old
Playing the nes one as a kid, then this one when got a ps1 was eye popping and amazing. I never ever made it far on the nes version but still liked it a lot. Playing solid hooked me instantly and as a kid could connect the dots on everything they did in the nes in the new technology and couldn’t believe it. So naturally when asked for a ps2 for Xmas I wanted mgs2 for it immediately to see that one’s leap. And boy I still was astounded. Playing just like solid, but the added graphical boost, all the little details sprinkled in really made it feel like next gen. Holding guards up and shooting out radios, even slipping on bird poop. Almost was amazing how every time a metal gear game was on the horizon you’d get excited at the possibilities of what they allow and show you what you could do with each leap in technology. Naturally it did stagnate to a point, but the fact multiple games they just up the anti was amazing.
The first time I played MGS1 I got seen at the heliport area at the beginning so I crawled into the vent and thought to myself “there’s no way this PS1 ai can get me now.” Imagine my shock when I found out they throw grenades into the vents. Such a cool detail and one I always remember from my first time playing.
@thothheartmaat2833 poor souls. I remember my PS1 remote rumbling when the Mantis was using his psyker abilities. I was but a child, and my eyes were opened... to think outside the box
I just got into metal gear about a month ago thanks to the master collection. Since I’m really not a huge fan of action games and shooters due to…kind of really sucking bad I figured mgs would work fine for me since the point is to avoid combat-and I’m so glad that I checked them out because they’ve quickly become some of my all time favorite games! Mgs1 BLEW ME AWAY it was *so good*!!! It’s really cool to see that I’m not the only one having that experience XD
Play them all my friend. They will all amaze you. Can't wait for master collection 2 so I can hopefully play mgs4 and peace walker. I have on ps3 but prefer to play on ps4
MGS 1 is such a masterclass in game design, it was FAR ahead of its time when it came out. It, along with Crash Bandicoot, and Command and Conquer Retaliation were the first video games i ever played, after my dad brought home those three games that were illegally ripped and burnt onto discs, and played on a Jailbroken PS1 (i refuse to call it PSX). This game is what got me into gaming and holds a special place in my heart as possibly my favourite game of all time, furthering into my favourite franchise of all time. I mean shit, i have had the MGS1 Alert theme as my phones ringtone whenever i get a call, and have had it as such since i got my first ever Motorola flip phone back in 2005 lol OH! Also, pay attention to Revolver Ocelot whenever hes up, not for anything in particular he does, but hes EASILY the deepest character in the entire franchise and his arc across every title and his involvement in the wider plot is just incredibly well done.
@@wrdlfe24 i remember reading somewhere that the blonde on snake was a miscommunication between the people making the cinematic and some other guy (probably kojima i cant remember)
During the Psycho Mantis battle in Metal Gear Solid, players must use flash grenades to stun Meryl. Additionally, it is necessary to switch the controller from port 1 to port 2 in order to prevent Mantis from reading the player's thoughts. After a few minutes, the screen will turn black with the word "HIDEO" displayed, indicating that the controller should be plugged back into port 1. This is a unique and exciting gameplay mechanic that can only be experienced on original hardware.
That detail was great back in the day when playing it on a CRT TV. I loved how it looked like you'd accidentally knocked the button on your remote for the VCR (Hideo instead of Video). I remember the whole Psycho Mantis part blowing my mind - especially when he read my memory (card) and commented on the fact that I was playing Castlevania: SOTN!
Fun fact about the codename "Deepthroat". Albeit being suggestive as a name, Deepthroat was the alias used by the man whom whistleblowed on Nixon on all that Watergate scandal. So, the "Deepthroat" contacting you throughout the game is whistleblowing you secrets and tips to progress. That was Kojima's intention in choosing that name.
Should've played it on PS1. The moment Mantis read my memory card AND made my dual shock controller move on the table I was done! This game is my entry into gaming and I will never forget it. In my mind its a masterpiece!
There’s 3 Cardboard boxes and you can use them to fast travel. One goes to the heliport (the first area) one goes to the nuclear storage building and one goes to the snowfield where you fight sniper wolf
MGS1 is still my favorite in the series. It doesn't over stay it's welcome with overly drawn out cutscenes, a player can reasonably complete it in one sitting and lends itself to multiple playthroughs. I always hoped for a MGS1 remake using the Fox Engine from MGSV (I just absolutely love gameplay in that game).
Still the best game ever made. The story, the voice acting, the music, the characters and feel of the game is phenomenal. never play the twin snakes remake. it lost everything that made this game so great
As a metal gear solid fan, I’m so happy to see you play the series for the first time; and I’m glad I found what I’m looking for to see people play it and see if they it or not!!! Although I bet you will enjoy it regardless!!!
This game blew my mind apart as a middle schooler and as a gamer since a very early age. MGS2 was so good it haunts me still to this day, with the last conversation that seems to have been a warning to us all. its one of the best back to back games I ever played. at the time of release this was very new thrilling especially when I couldn't use the internet to help me, I had to figure it out. also at the part in the game where you are in the cell after O hand snake the key card, there is another way the devs added ketchup in the game to get out of the cell, I don't remember how I got it but I do remember using it as fake blood laying down not moving the guard came back and thought I was dead so he opened the door to check on me. that was very immersive for me and I was shocked what it worked. another cool experience was during the Matice fight when you switch the wired controller to the second port, he could not read your mind.
Interestingly the puddles in the opening area aren't actually puddles, they are additional scenery below the floor, with a transparent layer on the floor texture. The PS1 wasn't capable of reflections to any reasonable degree so the team who designed it simply faked it. Very clever really!
Dude this is tripping me out, I was looking at buying MGS and wanting to see if was a game to play, then I saw your short on Hunk in RE4 and your most popular video is on MGS ahaha. You deserve more subs man, awesome vid.
The guards talking about "stealth", are referring to "stealth camouflage", also that cutscene only plays if you've been spotted/kill guards up to that point (I forget which)
This was one of the best reviews by you. Mgs truly is one of the games you should atleast once play in your life. I really enjoyed it Tip: you can use the chaff grenades to avoid the turrets.
I just think it’s crazy that back in like 1998 when this game came out we still haven’t really had anything quite like it since. with the waking through puddles or on metal rails and even leaving footsteps in the snow for the guards to notice and follow, was mind blowing at the time. Was one of my favourite games growing up and still is, still replaying it now.
Wow this video makes me feel old! 😂 I played MGS back in 98-98 ( I dont remember which, but i was in college), ans it was MAGIC! This was the first game on the ps1 that i played that utilized the rumble function of the dual shock controllers, so in that scene in the beginning, where you first saw the Hind D, and the rotors started whirling and you could FEEL IT THROUGH THE CONTROLLER??? Omg my mind was BLOWN! For me, it was like... idk... the video game version of watching Apollo 11 landing on the moon the first time! Nowadays (ha! Old people word) we are all so used to controller feedback that we dont even notice it anymore, but in this game it was revolutionary! We dont even need to talk about Psycho Mantis moving it across the desk!!! 😱 Lmao!
Only just discovered your channel / this series and binge watched the first 4 of these back to back. As a long time avid MGS fan it’s super interesting and engaging to hear the view on the titles from someone coming into it completely fresh. Bravo! 👏🏻
Love this game, this was the first game in the series I played, yet I was a kid so the story wasn't something I paid attention to. Also a little something in case you didn't know. If you had left the bomb in your inventory and it counted down Deepthroat would have called to warn you about it. Also i'm not sure if you know this but this game has two different endings. Meryl can die depending if you gave into the torture at the hands of Ocelot. If that happens you can escape with Otacon. Yet despite the ending with Meryl being canon, many gamers say that the ending with Otacon should be, as the cutscene you have with them is more emotional and in tune with the theme. You should check it out if you haven't.
Bro you left out the part where it is revealed that Solid Snake is actually the one with the recessive genes and Liquid is the one with the dominant genes.
I’m 40 years old, when this game came out I was in the 8th grade, I played it multiple times on the ps1 loved it but as time went by the game becomes almost forgotten until the rerelease 25 years later and oh man this game is amazing lol. I remembered this game being awesome when I was younger but I honestly didn’t appreciate it like it deserves. Two thumbs up 👍👍, 5 stars, A+ game, highly highly recommended Btw at 23:57 just throw a chaff grenade and you can skip your way up them steps if you wanted to
I feel that. 42 myself and played it on release in 1998 and finished it in 2 days. Got mgs2 with my purchase of ps2 and got snake eater at midnight on release day. Amazing games. Top 10 for me.
MGS1 is peak and really pushed the PS1 to it's limits back then. Hoping to see a review of MGS Ghost Babel (which iirc is the next game by release) next!
Welcome to the fan club bro, I played metal gear games when I was younger but wasn’t skilled enough to get far or old enough to understand the complex story, but I came back to it when they released that legacy collection for PS3 and I played through every game in the order of releases, epic gaming and epic story
35:02 and that is exactly what us ancient booMillennial gamers have been trying to tell the younger generations for dozens of years now. Where as the term "cinematic" has essentially become a slur for games in recent years, it used to be a PRAISE word describing strong atmosphere and kickass directing. Oldschool Resident Evil, MGS... heck, even Zelda: OOT were all praised for being "cinematic" back in the day, and it'd be hard to even joke about them being "movie games" in 2024. Anyway, congraz for falling into the MGS rabbit hole! Enjoy your stay, and play the games in the release order. And don't be afraid of replaying them, they got replay value for decades!
The utter lack of any attempt at cinematography in the Fire Emblem series is one of my most major complaints against it. Make cutscene dynamic. Don't just have people standing there talking to each other. Hell, even Final Fantasy managed to do that with sprites back in the SNES era.
I'm a recent subscriber. Metal Gear Solid was the first of the Metal Gear's I played. It was a terrific game and looked amazing for the day. I had already played Silent Hill and Resident Evil which had elements of the mechanic. I love both those games too but this really felt like a step up. It's like what you said with your Air / Ace Combat videos where successive games were able to get more out of the same hardware. I look forward to the rest of the series.
This is the title that changed everything I thought was possible with video games. I remember flipping through the pages of PSM and being mesmerized with the characters and graphics. It didn’t disappoint.
The cameras in the staircase is solved by using chaff grenades :) Great video, really happy to see people enjoying this game so long after its release. I have loved this game since I played it first time in 1999, and I really think it holds up. Props for mentioning the sound design, like you said often overlooked, by my god does this game nail it. There are so so many optional codec calls depending on when and where you call. I've completed this game probably close to a hundred times, and I still found a new codec call probably after the 70th playthrough.
I've been marathoing videos from your series wherever possible - as a longtime MG fan, I love hearing new perspectives from new players as they help provide new introspective ideas about a series I hold dear, so I'm gleefully enjoying the series up to the very end. Keep up the fantastic work!
One of the best games of all time, all the bosses are so iconic - it’s such a good 90s sci-fi spy action movie while balancing the gameplay as you said ..!
I'm playing MGS5 right now and so the Metal Gear mania got over me once again, I'm so glad I found this series of video you're making, it's really interesting to have a recap from someone who has never played the series before.
Just finished this game for the first time myself. I am also playing through this series for the first time having never gotten around to it when it was new. I echo a lot of your sentiments. I honestly thought this was an awesome game and a great evolution on what came before. It’s really cool to see how their ideas and design kept growing. Like it never feels like they scraped everything to start from scratch or abandoned their ideas. The mechanics and design feel like they are a natural evolution of what they did in previous games as the technology advanced. I feel like they really hit a sweet spot with this game too. Like a perfect balance of all its elements. One thing I found really surprising was the bosses. Aside from the fact that I found the Ocelot fight infuriating due to the clunky controls, I thought it was so innovative for the time how each boss had so much humanity to them. None of them really felt like a mustache twirling villain. They all had some sort of sympathetic trait to where I never really hated any of them. Kind of reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus where every boss fight is actually kinda sad.
23:52 the turrets are not unavoidable and serve a tutorial purpose, even if it's not an obvious one; You get the Stinger Missiles right before the fight against the Hind-D. Those turrets can be blow up with the Stinger missiles. So first time around they may catch you off guard, but the second time around you can use the stinger missiles to blow them up before they shoot you and learn how to control that weapon. And even if you don't get that at first, at this point you already have chaff granades and you've probably already learned they shut down cameras so you can use those to avoid getting hit.
During the Psycho Mantis fight, If you use Controller #2 instead of the fist controller the tv will say HIDEO and Psycho Mantis can't read your movements. He starts freaking out like "why can't i read you!?" The fight becomes super easy then. Also during the time where he's "reading your mind" he reads your memory card and will tell you if you have been playing any capcom games in an attempt to break the 4th wall. He also uses his psychic powers to make your controller move/vibrate . lol. This works on PSX I don't think it works on PC.
One kinda cool thing about the MGS games is they're all sort of concurrent to current events, MGS1 being concurrent with the completion of the mapping of the human genome, and a lot of anxiety surrounding that. Are we bound to our genetic destiny? Or can we chart our own course in life free from such troublesome inheritances? Those were live questions at the time and its clear Kojima must've been aware of and been inspired by them.
If u submit during the Interrogation, meryl dies and u save octocan instead, with the whole tunnel and end sequence with him. If u save meryl u get the infinte ammo bandana for the next playthrough and if you save otocan u get his stealth. Beat the game twice and u get a tux for the 3rd. Yep, it was that awesome
18:25- ParametricAvocado. LOL 😆 20:46- Same here, I actually read the Previous Operations of Metal Gear 2 and I couldn't find anything about Big Boss telling Snake that he is his father. SPOILER: Since Kojima made it that Big Boss is the father of Solid and Liquid Snake, he decided to give Big Boss his origin story as the main character in Metal Gear Solid 3/Snake Eater... Which would soon be called Delta.
This video speaks to me. I am you and you, are me. I ironically finished MGS1 for the first as well like, two days ago! I have the same story as you too, all my life I’ve heard so much noise about MGS but never took the time to pick it up until now. Idky but I’ve recently went head first into Metal Gear lore, didn’t even have anything to do with Metal Gear Delta😆 But, hindsight tells me my algorithm was probably pushing it knowing this game was in the works. Nice video 👌🏽
21:18 You can also lie down and open the bottle of ketchup to make the guard think you're bleeding out. 21:36 If you don't find it in your inventory early, DEEPTHROAT will contact you with some interesting dialogue to warn you. 23:45 use a chaff grenade to get past the turret cameras.
Using the ketchup while in the prison cell will draw the gard thinking you’re dead. And the sound design is in fact masterful and it was back in the ps1 era. Even to this day, mgs is still a fantastic game that i believe many developers got inspired of.
Easily one of my top 10 favorite games of all time. I just played through it again in January twice to re-experience both endings. For the uninitiated, this game is FULL of little details and gameplay mechanics that will surprise you and oftentimes break the fourth wall. It was a masterpiece back in the nineties and very much deserves its reputation as one of the best games ever made.
Very nice! Looking forward to relive all of the MG games here. There are so many more great bosses ahead. Masterpieces. RIP Mantis, one of the top, if not best bosses in all of video game history.
Dude I envy you - playing this game for the first time. And I bet you have only discovered 10% of what it has to offer. Even today, I learn of secret conversations and little quirks that I didn't know 25 years ago when playing this as a kid. Regarding the turrets at 23:50, dude just use chaff grenades.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the start of the MGS franchise! Very well narrated too, you're pretty good, I leave a sub! I love MGS, this game is still a masterpiece till this day ❤
Fun fact: There is actually another way to escape the prison cell which is as ingenious as it is hilarious. Otocon will give you the level 6 key card as well as ration and ketchup. The ketchup bottle might seem to be a joke by the game as a useless item. But if you lay down on the ground then use the ketchup bottle, you can spill it under your body to look like blood, which will grab the attention of the guard and cause him to freak out thinking someone killed you. You can then use this chance to melee and escape. You also get a bonus codec call with Otocon for escaping this way.
The fact that Mario Party essentially served as torture training for you is so funny 😂 Mario: “I’ma neva gonna tell-a you where-a the princess is, Revolva Bowser!” Bowser: - to Goomba -“Get the Koopa shells.” - to Mario - “We’ll see about that, plumber.”
You should have played this on original hardware. This was also legendary because there was hidden codec channels in the manual. When you fight Psycho Mantis he would read your memory card and say things like, "Ahhhh I see you love the game Wild Arms" etc.... Then you could never win that fight because he would "read" your mind and anticipate your every move. The trick was to change your controller from port to port 2. This game was such a great feat for its time :)
I hardly played any MGS games myself but I really loved to watch my childhood friend play these. I guess we were playing them together in a sense, amazing series.
MGS was the first game that I played nearly straight through...couldn't put it down. My awe during the final music cut scene ,I remembered feeling overwhelmed by the story and gameplay I had experienced. The detail, the 4th wall break while fighting psycho mantis, the wild boss fights...so much to love.
It's Mount Rushmore game for me. This thing was an absolute thing to behold when it came out, a game unlike anything that had come before it in almost every way. Both Ocarina of Time and MGS were absolute revolutions when they released.
Nice review! There are so much details and Easter eggs in this game, that it is always interesting to play it another time. E.g. the poster of anime mechas from the Otacons room, is from another game from Kojima. And Raven is also the most charismatic boss for me. 🥳
I had to look up how to survive the "The elevator's coming down. Stay undetected until then" because for my ENTIRE childhood I could never get past that. Ever.
This game also has a fast travel system built into it. If you jump into the back of a truck and equip a box you found in a different area, after a short wait, you will be driven to that area.
I remember replaying the game on my recently. i accidentally figured out if you equip Wolfs handkerchief, the wolves won't attack you. I was completely floored!
As a teenager when this game was released, I assure you, it changed everything. It was so cinematic. You used to crave playing it for the atmosphere, let alone the story. A true masterpiece in digital arts.
After the torture section, you can use the Ketchup trick, it's more fun than hiding under the bed. For the tower stairs, you can spam Stun Grenade to move quickly, use the Chaff Grenade to disable Camera, and yes Chaff disable Radar so you can use it on 1st Phase of Rex, Spam Chaff then Stingray the hell out of it.
There is a briliant little details you might have missed, such as when you unequip your weapon the ninja does too, to make it a fair fight, while if you fought him with weapons all the way you would never get this hand to hand fight. While psycho mantis can be fought 2 ways also. but what was mind blowing for me is that the prison guard catch you when you hide under the bed you can't fool him again with the same trick, you need to use other methods such as Ketchup and lie down on it so he thinks its blood. Briliance that is not present in present games
I actually played the demo on a demo disc a month or so before release I believe and it ended with the DARPA chief dying and I knew right then I HAD to finish it. At that time there were NO games like this, nothing so polished and like basically playing out an action movie. It was a true innovator. Played the full game in 1998 on release and the first night I played almost all the way through. The music is AMAZING Harry Greyson Williams was an awesome composer. In my top ten list of all time. Better to play the gamecube remake though Twin Snakes, makes it much better. It and snake eater are astoundingly great. Played Sons of liberty with the purchase of my ps2. When snake eater came out I drove 50 miles to get it at midnight on release. These games are masterpieces. The faces in mgs1 didn’t’ have detail because it wasn’t possible with the memory they had.
How about this game uh!? I was 13 in 1999 when I played it the first time. Imagine the place all of the key moments of this game have in my memory. I cried when Sniper Wolf died back then and that 4 second clip in this video brought instant tears to my eyes. What game it was and I’m glad to hear it still holds up today. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
I was yen when this game finally came out and i would still consider this one of the best games i ever played. This was my first Metal Gear game I played but it made me a instant fan
Awesome video, it was nice to revisit this game through your eyes. I absolute was obsessed with this game when it was released. I loved the VR training game that was released too.
Funny to hear it blew you away in 2024. Imagine playing this game back in the 90s. MGS2 is going to give you a wild ride with its story and loads of new features.
I absolutely adore this game. Got this for my 15th birthday didn’t come out in Europe (UK) until early 99’ read all the previews in the various gaming magazines before release in the months prior. In my top 5 games of all time.

Chaff grenades my man. Blocks cameras, stops Vulcan's tank detecting you, screws up the Ninja, Metal Gear Rex and so forth. They're your best friend in this game.

Great to see that game still has value for younger audiences today!
If you plugged your controller into the second player port he couldn't read your moves when trying to attack him. Hideo was on another level and still is.
Ya that was probably the craziest thing I experienced in gaming haha
Right, I also tripped out when Ocelot said "Don't even think about using auto fire or I'll know. "
If I re-call correctly, during this fight you had to swap the controller port from port 1 to port 2 in order to beat him?

MGS is one of my all time favourites and I think the success of this release founded what the whole franchise is today. ❤
I remember my aunt’s boyfriend had this game and even though he offered me turns to play I never actually took a turn, I just watched him over the course of like 3 or 4 nights play the game. TIL like 3am because he was a young g doctor and got off late. We were so caught up in the story it was like binge watching a great show. RIP Uncle Rodney
No microtransactions either
@@charlesledbetter9063bcYESSS the code on the disc case! I almost forgot that. Great memories.
the technological leap between games is still astounding to this day.
Metal Gear Solid has better stealth mechanics than aaa games that came out this week.
Me too. I got the PlayStation dual shock system with MGS for Xmas. Wow... 🥲
100%. only Title that comes close is Mgs 3,Snake Eater .
@@MrMagicglass heck yeah can't wait for Chole to get to that one.
The first time I played MGS1 I got seen at the heliport area at the beginning so I crawled into the vent and thought to myself “there’s no way this PS1 ai can get me now.” Imagine my shock when I found out they throw grenades into the vents. Such a cool detail and one I always remember from my first time playing.
ya ded..
Basically if you just played Metal Gear Solid you have just begun to live your life as of that moment.
Basically
its incomplete without it..
@thothheartmaat2833 poor souls. I remember my PS1 remote rumbling when the Mantis was using his psyker abilities. I was but a child, and my eyes were opened... to think outside the box
For real. Played it in 1998 and beat it in like 2 days. Could not put it down.
@@joshnizzle hells to the yes! Me too, I don't regret any all-nighters with friends and mgs
I mean shit, i have had the MGS1 Alert theme as my phones ringtone whenever i get a call, and have had it as such since i got my first ever Motorola flip phone back in 2005 lol
OH! Also, pay attention to Revolver Ocelot whenever hes up, not for anything in particular he does, but hes EASILY the deepest character in the entire franchise and his arc across every title and his involvement in the wider plot is just incredibly well done.
Snake had blonde hair. He colored it and cut it so he wouldn’t get mistaken as Liquid. It’s in the briefing tapes in the menu my guy. 😊
@@wrdlfe24 i remember reading somewhere that the blonde on snake was a miscommunication between the people making the cinematic and some other guy (probably kojima i cant remember)
It was staff miscommunication, otherwise why would his hair not be blonde in MGS2? There would be no reason to keep dyeing it
There would be. I lean with people being brought back to life and all…
During the Psycho Mantis battle in Metal Gear Solid, players must use flash grenades to stun Meryl.
Controller ports aren’t the only way to beat him, you can break the statues
1998 saw lots of games way ahead of their time and spearheading the likes of them is Metal Gear Solid. Im happy you played it.
That was Kojima's intention in choosing that name.
i love metal gear solid a lot and your reviews of these games gave me the most youtube enjoyment i've had in a long time great work!
Fire pfp
Should've played it on PS1. The moment Mantis read my memory card AND made my dual shock controller move on the table I was done! This game is my entry into gaming and I will never forget it. In my mind its a masterpiece!
as a Ace Combat and Metal Gear fan, i am eating really good in this channel
Deepthroat" is a reference to the watergate scandle in 1970s. The informant in case used that codename
Hehehehehehehe
When you get a level 5 key card that opens all subsequent doors:
🎶 It’s been a long road, getting from there to here. 🎶
Dude this is tripping me out, I was looking at buying MGS and wanting to see if was a game to play, then I saw your short on Hunk in RE4 and your most popular video is on MGS ahaha.
You deserve more subs man, awesome vid.
The guards talking about "stealth", are referring to "stealth camouflage", also that cutscene only plays if you've been spotted/kill guards up to that point (I forget which)
Ooooh my god I can't wait for your impressions of MGS2 hahahah
I played it on PSX... my Fav game of all time
It's hard to comprehend now how mind blowing and ahead of its time MGS was.
The escalation is REAl for this series
This was one of the best reviews by you. Mgs truly is one of the games you should atleast once play in your life. I really enjoyed it Tip: you can use the chaff grenades to avoid the turrets.
damn, why didn't I think of that?
Now my stupidity is archived forever 😑
@@notcole you can also use them on grey fox. You can also destroy the turrets with rockets.
You can also run and shoot in this game. Hold square after that hold X. Hold both buttons and spam square to fire and double tap r1 to reload
Bravo! 👏🏻
Wow. To experience these games for the first time again...
Actually jealous. Happy gaming buddy, You're in for one hell of a trip.
Two thumbs up 👍👍, 5 stars, A+ game, highly highly recommended
Btw at 23:57 just throw a chaff grenade and you can skip your way up them steps if you wanted to
I feel that.
Easily in my top 20 games of all time. Some games you play and some you experience. MGS was an experience
MetalGear is amazing. I remember watching my nephew play it and thinking the beginning was so cinematic.
Welcome to the fan club bro, I played metal gear games when I was younger but wasn’t skilled enough to get far or old enough to understand the complex story, but I came back to it when they released that legacy collection for PS3 and I played through every game in the order of releases, epic gaming and epic story
"Completely unavoidable" turrets huh?
It was the first MG on Playstations, but it's the 3rd in the series
@@Reyd_01 sorry, I meant to say first that i played. I read your reply but hadn’t reread my message until now.
This is the title that changed everything I thought was possible with video games.
I remember flipping through the pages of PSM and being mesmerized with the characters and graphics. It didn’t disappoint.
The cameras in the staircase is solved by using chaff grenades :)
Great video, really happy to see people enjoying this game so long after its release.
You get the first gun in the back of the truck when you exit the lift after opening
I need to play it again! Great review!
20:32 Haha. Try that again on hard mode!
And even if you don't get that at first, at this point you already have chaff granades and you've probably already learned they shut down cameras so you can use those to avoid getting hit.
at 24:00 about the turrets in the tower, just throw a chaff grenade and those turret should be unable to detect you
During the Psycho Mantis fight, If you use Controller #2 instead of the fist controller the tv will say HIDEO and Psycho Mantis can't read your movements.
So cool that someone is sharing the same experience I am! Never had the opportunity as a kid and now I’m hooked
I remember falling in love with the first MGS1 in 98, still in love full completion of MGS5. Happily open to a 6th true installment.
LOL 😆
20:46- Same here, I actually read the Previous Operations of Metal Gear 2 and I couldn't find anything about Big Boss telling Snake that he is his father.
SPOILER: Since Kojima made it that Big Boss is the father of Solid and Liquid Snake, he decided to give Big Boss his origin story as the main character in Metal Gear Solid 3/Snake Eater... Which would soon be called Delta.
No official credit to Vee for making it? That's cold. I'm taking my like back

I think this is my favourite in the series. Set the bar so high in quality in story telling. I’m liking these reviews in chronological order.
Using the ketchup while in the prison cell will draw the gard thinking you’re dead.
And the sound design is in fact masterful and it was back in the ps1 era.
Even to this day, mgs is still a fantastic game that i believe many developers got inspired of.
Not sure if he’s gotten to it yet, but I can wait for the reactions to MGS4…
Easily one of my top 10 favorite games of all time. I just played through it again in January twice to re-experience both endings. For the uninitiated, this game is FULL of little details and gameplay mechanics that will surprise you and oftentimes break the fourth wall. It was a masterpiece back in the nineties and very much deserves its reputation as one of the best games ever made.
Brutha “deepthroat” was a reference, that was the code name of a real informant/source back in the 60’s or thereabouts
You can run and shoot at the same time by holding the X button, and I've discovered it only on my 3rd playthrough. It made my gameplay a lot easier
It’s crazy how well the first game holds up. I played it for the first time this year, and I was hooked the whole time.
its iconic, the stealth action there was nothing like it at the time. when i was at school and friends told me what you could do it blown me away
I can't say why without spoilers, but the promotional materiel is actually part of the experience for mgs2.
Or hiding under the bed.
@@Balaban78 I know, he demonstrated that in the video. I was demonstrating that there was another way to do it he might not have been aware of
@@HumorousLOL ah, I didn't watch that far.
What a great video! Totally got me the chills and just want to go back and play it again
Played this game as a 13 year old and it blew my mind. Glad to see people still giving it a shot. I recommend everyone to try it once.
The fact that Mario Party essentially served as torture training for you is so funny 😂
Mario: “I’ma neva gonna tell-a you where-a the princess is, Revolva Bowser!”
Bowser: - to Goomba -“Get the Koopa shells.”
- to Mario - “We’ll see about that, plumber.”
"But for me personally.. I never played it"
Wtf does that mean?? Why do people talk like this? Just say "But I never played it."
I wish I was you, being able to play this for the first time must’ve been something special.
Metal Gear Solid from PS1 era is probably hands down the best voice acting I ever seen. Every cut scene was phenomenal voice acting at its finest.
12:25 When you find out that Zoomers don't know about Watergate...
